Looking at the measurement data from NBA combine.....does reach really matter and therefore height relative irrelevant. ie if a 7 footer can be outreached by someone 6'10', which would one prefer ?

it's not that simple. There are databases full of anthropometric data and athletic ability measurements combined with in game performance statistics. So it depends on what you are looking for. If you see in your data that more athletic, longer armed guys are better at rebounding than taller, but less athletic guys, and you desire rebounding, then you want the more athletic guy. But if you are looking for interior shot blocking and you see data that says taller guys are better than athletic guys, then you want the taller guy. It depends on what your priorities are and the situations you expect that player to perform well in. They generally don't guess on stuff like this, it's very metric driven.

I'd say in general, it does matter. There is a correlation between height and metrics like how high someone can jump, how long their arms are, etc. Having said that, a correlation doesn't have to be a perfect correlation to be useful. Your example proves the exception is worth considering. But if height was irrelevant, the average NBA player would be 5'9" like the average American male, so it obviously does matter.

Great point. And, I would argue, that unfortunately for the average heighted American male, (5'8-5'10), the avg height in most professional sports is taller, including hockey, tennis, etc.
Therefore, while there are avg height pro athletes, it certainly helps to be taller.

Judge Smails: Ty, what did you shoot today?
Ty Webb: Oh, Judge, I don't keep score.
Judge Smails: Then how do you measure yourself with other golfers?
Ty Webb: By height

I think this sums it up. Height IS important.
