He scored 24 points and was 6 of 10 from the 3 point range against Tennessee Tech.

Who is Desmond Bane and why do we care?

Big debate on this board a couple years ago on whether or not we should offer him late as it was thought he'd jump on that opportunity if presented. Kid from somewhere in Indiana. Seton Catholic or something?

He definitely is not slow. Everybody was Downing him because he was from a small school and they didn't think he played against good competition. Who did he end up signing with? He played in class 1a same class that Hunter came from that we just signed.

I know a knock was that he was slow...I really don't know foer certain. I only really remember his dunk over someone. I'm guessing he was being looked at as a 2 or 3. He scored a bunch, but in limited viewings never had the quickness of Hunter. Wish him well. I'm thinking this was the same year Purdue wanted the 2 or 3 that played with Xiavier Simpson that went to X I think...now he was ready to shoot when just across half court I seem to recall

He's at TCU with coach Jamie Dixon.

We had one more scholarship for the 2016 class and the options were:

--Bank it (we did)
--Desmond Bane
--Matt Chastain (tore his ACL last year and then transferred to Illinois State)

There will always be some things about Painter I can find fault with, but I'm starting to trust him with who he does and doesn't offer.

I do remember short arms actually being brought up as a knock on the kid, which was unusual, but wingspan does make a difference in basketball. Didn't seem to hurt his shooting ability much though. He'd still most likely be behind Cline on this team so hard to say he's a major loss

not sure about that

He's already shown that he can score in a variety of ways at TCU.

Not saying I know the world but I do know a couple High School refs in Indiana and I know some coaches in Indiana I had some conversations with them about this kid when he was in high school. They all thought nobody gave him the respect that he deserved they also said the schools in Indiana should have gave him a better look than what they did.

I hear what you're saying but you can't take everyone. The test is "who would you take off our current team to have taken him?"

Not saying Purdue should have took him just pointing out that no College in Indiana gave him a good look. Basically the people I'm talking about couldn't believe not one school from Indiana tried to recruit him they said it wouldn't have mattered what class he played in he would have been good in any of them. And you're right I wouldn't trade anybody right now from Purdue.

Here's what Brian wrote recently:
"Haarms has been damn impressive. He probably wasn't so when he'd just gotten to America, came off the bench for his prep school and barely played in his one season of AAU. Purdue offered him based off workouts, basically. There was some risk there."

Congrats for him, but are we going to post scoring of all the kids we didn't offer?
I saw his name mentioned today on CBS Sports for TCU and their #25 ranking (a couple spots behind Purdue at #23. Boilers should be much higher). TCU is pretty balanced. I remembered all of the discussions on here from a couple years ago about Bane and whether to offer. Good to see a HS player from Indiana (not highly regarded) in the news here. Here is some more "useless information" I read in the local Fort Worth paper:

TCU, Dixon may have hit something big with one of his last recruits in 2016

Seems like a good discussion for a TCU message board.

J P Macura or the kid from Park Tudor?

Bane was tearing it up in the Adidas gauntlet tour. He was doing it against top compition. Hard worker, very strong, decent size, good defender, and a good shooter. I was screaming to anybody who would listen that we needed to sign him. In all honesty, TCU was a better fit for him. He got to play immediately and he has done well in the spotlight. Excited he got a P5 offer and made the best of it. He is such a great kid. The moment he committed to TCU they became my second favorite team. I don't know what he would have done at Purdue, but they never offered and that is that. Purdue is in a really good spot now and in the future and Bane is in a very good spot himself.

Yeah maybe not the same class, but if we hadn't have offered weatherford, we would have had ample room for Bane. While some said he had his limitations he still had a much higher of a ceiling than Weathorford ever did.

We would have missed on Sasha had we offered Bane. We had room to add Bane, we just pocketed a scholly for the 17 class. Sasha would have been the trade off. I expect big things from Sasha. Bane possibly would have seen time with the loss of Smotherman, but he likely would have been on redshirt. He wouldn't have seen much if any time this year. So far it looks like it worked out perfectly for both, although Bane may end up being significantly better than Sasha, Sasha seems to be a perfect fit for this system.
