Desmond Bane knocks out Kansas

Forgot all about him until right now. Looks like he has had a decent freshman season. Averaging 6 and 3 and shooting decent percentages. He'll probably be pretty solid as an upperclassman. He was obviously big for them today.

Did anybody ever understand why Painter didn't offer Bane when he had unused scholarships?

I don't think if Purdue offered he would have chose us unless we offered him early. TCU offered immediate playing time and he started the first couple of games. He was pretty productive for a freshman and took advantages of the opportunity he was given. He is such a great kid and I was very disappointed when we didn't sign him. I think Painter held off because he wanted as many scholarships as he could hold in high hopes for the 2017 class. Plus Bane would have had to red shirt. People were worried about how he would do against higher competition, but he accelled at the Adidas challenge. He isn't super athletic, but he has a real feel for the game and he can score. I am very happy for him and became a TCU fan the moment they signed him. What a big game and one heck of a performance!!

Thank you very much for your thoughts. Man, the vibe I got was that if Purdue offered he'd accept. Maybe I'm making this up in my head but I feel like it was right after it came out Purdue was not offering that he finally verballed to TCU.

It is possible we would have got him because he wanted to stay in Indiana, but TCU was obviously a better fit for him. He was very interested in Purdue, but once he got the TCU offer he made a decision fairly quickly. Miami (OH) was the front runner until he got his first and only P5 offer. Dixon sold him and he gets to play with the other freshman Fisher. Dixon also gave him a shot at starting. I just don't think the Indiana draw was enough to pull away from immediate playing time. If we would have offered him before TCU, I think he would have signed immediately. Bane is small for a wing and not athletic enough for a pure scoring guard. He can shoot, but not like Purdue's current shooters. He is fearless and finds ways to score. Great kid with excellent basketball IQ. He puts the team first and only cares about winning. It would have been 2-3 years before he realized his potential at Purdue, but he would have fit. Not afraid to defend or put in work. Definitely fun to cheer for an Indiana kid and I hope TCU sneaks into the tournament!
