Dline is our weakest position group by far, and our weakest in recruiting so far as well. Going forward Brohm really needs to focus here in recruiting so it's not a multi year problem.
At DT, we have 4 guys over 280 lbs: Wilson, Neal, Criddle, Watts. They will be the 2 deep next year, with Wilson the best player. Issue here is Criddle barely played last yr and Watts is off a redshirt, so we don't know what we have there. They both had other P5 offers, so hopefully at least one is serviceable. Other more important issue is depth after those 4 falls off a cliff. We have no other DT over 280 lbs, and the guys we have in the 270's (Fred Brown, Keiwan Jones, Will Colmery) are likely not B1G quality anyway. So basically we can't afford any DT injuries or we end up vastly undersized in a power running conference.
At DE, we have 2 clear starters in Robinson and Larkin, and not much talent beyond that. Miles showed flashes a couple yrs ago, but has been buried on the bench recently. Chazmyn Turner didn't play last yr even though playing time was readily available. Our two DE recruits (Higgins, Hightower) are 2*'s who are likely fringe P5 quality guys. At least they are both at weight though, so can provide depth. Overall, quality depth is a big issue here, and pass rushing skill is almost non-existent (Gelen had 5 sacks, and will be our best pass rusher by far).
Given the improvements in the secondary, our best chance on D is probably going to be stacking the box and blitzing every 3rd down for pass rush. We'll have bigger safeties so can play 8 in the box, and force teams to complete deep throws to beat us. Our CB's will need to cover with this strategy, but with Jallow and Winfield I think it could work. Honestly it's our only chance, as we don't have the Dline to pass rush or stop the run on their own.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot. We'll also need to score over 30/game to give us a chance. That part I actually feel pretty good about, especially if we land Matthews and Wright. We'd have speed everywhere and Brohm knows how to use it.
