Guys who know the roster better then I do- We've lost two DT recruits and I don't know if they weren't a fit for the staff or if the kids changed their minds.

What's the state of the defensive line with present players going into next season? Good defensive lineman are so important in stopping the run in the Big ten. With less then a week to go and no DT's committed do you guys think it's fine or a position of concern?? Especially coming off a miserable year defensively last year. Thanks

Defensive line and linebacker depth will be their biggest issue next year. They have some very talented defensive backs coming in that might lessen the sting though. CJB seems to be focusing more on high end guys that can help the offense now. Robinson seemed to be a likely decomittment early in the process, but after the visit he seemed all in. Something happened, and I would be very curious as to what it was. Losing him and Johnsonis very unfortunate, but Johnson was more of a project. Robinson was big enough, but I don't think he was strong enough. Purdue also fell off the radar with Mcdougle and they are likely going to loose Harris to Baylor, a squad that is going to get lit up with heavy sanctions. He said the Defensive line was a top priority, but I haven't seen in. He may have more faith in it than I do, but I am not sure what he is seeing. Maybe he thinks he can attract better 2018 Dline targets and work with what he has for a year? Not sure, but McDougle is going to be a really special player. Robinson will be a good player too. Johnson may not see playing time for quite a while at NC State and I would be surprised if he doesn't red shirt. I haven't heard about any visits with Yeast recently, so I wonder if he is focusing on the Juco guys. Would have loved to see Yeast. Would have been a heck of a steal and exactly what CJB needs to run his offense.

The biggest concern I have is if CJB is a heavy offensive coach and recruits well on that side of the ball and leaves defense always a little short. Leaving Purdue to be a one dimensional team. It's far to early to even come to this type of conclusion. I so hope JB isn't that guy say (Rich Rod) you know the type. Very excited for CJB's tenure can't wait.

That wasn't my concern at first. He was targeting some very talented and highly recruited guys on the Dline. Unfortunately, he didn't land them and lost our best Dline recruit. I know he is an offensive guy, but the biggest issue is going to be that Dline and linebacker core. When tiller was successful, he had some big time players on the defensive side of the ball. Maybe he plans to get ahead early and play like the Colts used to. Force the other team to pass early and often. Our defensive backfield should be pretty solid. But, that won't work if captain turnover keeps throwing interceptions left and right.

We lost Repogle and Panfil. Wilson was off the team for awhile and returned. Some posters speculated it was an academic issue that was corrected. brohm did sign a 2* juco DE Higgins who signed early, and 2* DE Hightower, who he flipped from WKU.

Admittedly, I haven't seen any recruiting website that has said LSU has offered Harris., but he's tweeted about 50 million times it's down to either baylor or LSU.

Nixon was a 2 * Northern ill commit who just decommited on the same day he received an offer from Iowa.

I've seen several other names - mostly from Florida schools that were 2* athletes, and not ones I'd want to build around for the next 4 years.

Steele just decommited from Louisville and tweeted to the world, I'm accepting all offers. What type of an athlete decommits from a school like Louisville, and then declares his free agency with only one week left, unless he already has a Guarantee?

McDougle seems to have slipped away. he's at WV this weekend.

I have no idea what happened to Sharpe. he decommitted from WKU the day brohm left . he had several other Div 1 offers including one from Alabama. but His name hasn't surfaced as visiting or receiving nay offers anywhere.

At linebacker, you have 3* Sterling Jones, a great defensive payer of the year from Alabama, and that other 2* Jones from Miami who is committed to CFU or FAU or FIU .

We are really hurting in recruiting defensive linemen and linebackers. I'm curious as to what caused the exodus amongst our defensive linemen recruits. The majority have found other schools, but except for Harrris and McDougle, those other schools are not power 5 schools. Holt has to be looking for a special type of lineman. and if he's going to be less than mediocre, I'd rather he be a juco rather than being at purdue for 4 years. it would also be nice if the player didn't have to redshirt his first year just for the purposes of bulking up. I personally hate signing 225 pound linemen and hoping they will gain 40-60 pounds in one year. That is an unhealthy practice.

Are there anymore good WKU boys on their committed list that may be interested in playing at Purdue that can help soon...

Dline is our weakest position group by far, and our weakest in recruiting so far as well. Going forward Brohm really needs to focus here in recruiting so it's not a multi year problem.

At DT, we have 4 guys over 280 lbs: Wilson, Neal, Criddle, Watts. They will be the 2 deep next year, with Wilson the best player. Issue here is Criddle barely played last yr and Watts is off a redshirt, so we don't know what we have there. They both had other P5 offers, so hopefully at least one is serviceable. Other more important issue is depth after those 4 falls off a cliff. We have no other DT over 280 lbs, and the guys we have in the 270's (Fred Brown, Keiwan Jones, Will Colmery) are likely not B1G quality anyway. So basically we can't afford any DT injuries or we end up vastly undersized in a power running conference.

At DE, we have 2 clear starters in Robinson and Larkin, and not much talent beyond that. Miles showed flashes a couple yrs ago, but has been buried on the bench recently. Chazmyn Turner didn't play last yr even though playing time was readily available. Our two DE recruits (Higgins, Hightower) are 2*'s who are likely fringe P5 quality guys. At least they are both at weight though, so can provide depth. Overall, quality depth is a big issue here, and pass rushing skill is almost non-existent (Gelen had 5 sacks, and will be our best pass rusher by far).

Given the improvements in the secondary, our best chance on D is probably going to be stacking the box and blitzing every 3rd down for pass rush. We'll have bigger safeties so can play 8 in the box, and force teams to complete deep throws to beat us. Our CB's will need to cover with this strategy, but with Jallow and Winfield I think it could work. Honestly it's our only chance, as we don't have the Dline to pass rush or stop the run on their own.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. We'll also need to score over 30/game to give us a chance. That part I actually feel pretty good about, especially if we land Matthews and Wright. We'd have speed everywhere and Brohm knows how to use it.

Thanks for the great info...This may sound odd but I truly hope then based on a couple of these post that CJB goes out and offers a ton of preferred walk-on DT's and LBers. like between 5-10 combined. Purdue is a great school and there's clearly opportunity to gain a scholarship at DT or LB. He needs to go sell this fact to a bunch of kids committed to smaller schools across the country. IMO

a very strange tweet by DE/DT Justin Harris. He visited Baylor today. before visiting Baylor, he said he was down to Baylor and LSU. but after visiting Baylor, he now tweets he is down to Baylor, Mississippi, LSU and Purdue. I'm not getting my hopes up, but that tweet makes me believe he wasn't thrilled with his visit to Baylor. take it for what it's worth. it's free speculation provided by me.

Which probably means Harris is down to Mississippi and Purdue...for DEs LSU is chasing K'Lavon Chaisson, the 4 Star/5 Star DE from Texas. After that, LSU closes shop!

He just retweeted an earlier tweet, probably more saying his decision is coming soon. Don't think it means we're in it again.

Two positives for us is Baylor has 3 DE's committed already, and he's friends with Viktor Beach. Still think he ends up at Baylor or LSU though (if they offer)

I still find it very odd in reviewing 4 different recruiting sites, that none of them reflect LSU giving Harris an offer. The news about Baylor's latest sexual abuse problem may have been enough to scare Harris away to look into other alternatives. However, Mississippi will still provide Purdue with stiff competition for his services. it's nice to see we are back into consideration.

LSU wants him as a TE, but don't believe they've offered. Wouldn't touch Baylor with a 10 foot pole if I were him. Come play early and often, boiler up. Doubt it happens though.

He posted a quote that was defending Baylor. It mentioned that everybody affiliated with the scandal was gone. I still think he picks Baylor.

The problem is, the sanctions are coming and the same boosters that push for winning at all cost are still there. Baylor needs a stiff penalty, but after seeing the joke Penn State penalties, I imagine Baylor will be back in full power within 3 years. Covering up crimes continues to happen because the punishment doesn't outweigh the potential reward. It is disgusting. When an institution fails on the level of Baylor and Penn State, the sport should be completely removed from campus for 4 years. It is literally the only way to stop it from happening. Until then, win at all costs will prevail and this kind of thing will happen again.

still amazed that Baylor is still considered by recruits w/ sanctions coming their way.
