Kind of weird to think about it, but the last three really important recruiting wins for Purdue have come from kids previously committed to another school. In each of the three scenarios, Painter's much-maligned recruiting strategy could be the single biggest advantage for Purdue.
1. Isaac Haas -- decommits from Wake Forest during the signing period only to turn around and commit to Purdue and Painter. Haas has mentioned in several interviews that when he called Painter to ask for advice, Painter told him he should stick to his word. Haas says that honesty resonated with him regarding CMP.
2. Jon "The Baptist" Octeus -- is denied admission to UCLA. Ed Schilling steers Octeus to Painter and Purdue because of the work Painter did and the relationships Painter developed during the Bluiett recruitment.
3. Caleb Swanigan -- We all know how that one played out.
Not saying that his strategy and style is perfect -- it's far from it. But there is a value to the honesty and forthrightness that CMP has displayed throughout the recruiting process. And in the last two years it's paid off in a big way.
