David Bell: Down to a two horse race?

What worries me about Penn St is I know Mr Bell wants to play some basketball too. And I think there’s more availability for that in Happy Valley.

He has come out several times in several different interviews that basketball doesn’t play into his decision. Bell is an incredible athlete. He can play DB/WR and basketball at the P5 level. You put him with Robinson and Moore and Plummer is going to break some records. That offense would be good enough to win a championship and this ‘19 defensive class is incredibly impressive.

What Moore is doing got his attention. What that offense accomplished against Missouri opened up some eyes as well. Not to mention GK is recruiting his butt off as well. I like Purdue’s chances and if they land Bell, I think Robinson is a real possibility as well.

If Purdue finishes with Grant, GK, Weaver, Robinson, Bell that’s 5 players I have in the top 150 talentwise. Grants measurable are incredibly impressive, he can walk right in with Big ready size/skill set. GK is a freak and will start day one. Bell has incredible hands. He isn’t a 4.4 guy, but he uses his size and strength to get open and is an end zone threat Purdue doesn’t have. Weaver has been at a lot of the top camps and has incredible size and athleticism. He will benefit with GK on the other side and will give Purdue one of the best pass rushes in the country. Robinson is every bit as explosive and Moore. He can be an RB and opens up the playbook. He is a sproles type player that is a threat to score every time. Defenses will have to guess who to double up on and Purdue would have an explosive offense as a result.

Losing the close games unfortunately is due to a lack of talent. What the Haze did to this program was borderline criminal. They had no depth last year and lost almost everything on defense. That kind of young defense with no pass rush is going to cost you games. 0-3 by 8 points shows how close they are. If they had the ‘19 class I am certain they would be 3-0 at this point. Next year should be an easier schedule (has to be right?!) and a 10 win season isn’t out of the question depending on the schedule.

I don’t think Purdue gets Robinson. He likes Nebraska, KY, and Alabama it seems. Wish I was wrong. I’d be quite pleased to get Bell and Mershawn Rice on the outside with Rondale and Sheffield in the slot.

Nebraska makes no sense to me for Robinson. His mother was having some health issues so I thought Kentucky would be in the lead. He had a good visit with Bell and Moore left an impression. Moore has come in and is an absolute star in this system. I understand Kentucky. I understand Alabama.

Nebraska just boggles my mind. Nebraska is pretty stacked at WR and RB and their system isn’t near the offensive system that Purdue has. Purdue has way more passing yards and more rushing yards. Purdue has almost double the passes (and Robinson is was being viewed as a WR in most places), and only a few more rushing attempts (for less yards). Purdue will scheme and design plays to get the most out of him. Moore is the perfect example and CJB did the same thing with the WKU speedster as well. If the decision is purely football, Nebraska makes no sense.

He talked about the “tradition of Nebraska football” and how “Nebraska has hardcore, passionate fans”. Nebraska does have those. That said, I don’t see the Huskers ending up with him either. He seems to gush about every program he visits after his visits. I’ve said I see KY and Alabama before Nebraska. We still have a shot but it would help to win some games including vs Nebraska.

If he wants to see a passionate fan base, come on over to Purdue and win us a national championship. No way we don’t get to at least a final four if we add Robinson and Bell to that offense. Not to mention add a few more of the remaining top targets. Purdue is literally the perfect football situation for him. Offense built for a guy of his skills and a chance at immediate play time. Check and check. Sign on the dotted line and make it happen!

Preaching to the choir man. I like your positive point-of-view and wish more Knuckleheads could see the bigger picture like you. We have a fair number of defeatist attitude types on this board. They think they’re “keeping it real”. I think they are mired in the past and have no vision of what Brohm and his staff can accomplish here. We will look back years from now and be in awe of what he’s accomplished.

Don't sleep on the Hawks here. Bell taking his official tomorrow for Night game vs. Wisconsin.

Iowa has a weird pipeline into the Indianapolis area. Purdue is going to have to shut that down if they want to maintain success although Purdue has been doing extremely well in Ohio and Kentucky. Purdue just needs to close up that border and keeping Bell out of Iowa would be a big first step. Currently it is thought that it is between Penn State and Purdue. But Iowa has had some decent success with the Indianapolis schools. I still think Bell picks Purdue but I am not writing it off just yet.

Anything's possible, but he likes Purdue's offense under Brohm better than Iowa's under the Junior Ferentz. Iowa has had some success getting players out of Indy over the last 10 years or so (thanks in no small part to Danny Hope's and D-Haze's ineptness), but unlike the OL Iowa has committed, Iowa cannot sell him on a history of sending WRs to the NFL or on a high-flying passing attack. Brohm's teams led the nation in scoring over three years at Western Kentucky. That's what he's trying to work towards at Purdue. Rondale Moore is a great first step. Getting Bell and/or Milton Wright is another. Add in guys like Mershawn Rice and Amad Anderson and the receiving corps is getting to be what Brohm wants. Iowa has been a running-oriented school for years under Ferentz and that's not changing anytime soon. That's just the plain, simple truth. We'll just have to see.....

I think it was Dave Lackford commenting on KC that Robison’s Mom might move to Nebraska. That would solve that dilemma of being separated from her.

I mean, he has to do what he has to do, but Nebraska makes the least amount of sense out of the favorites. Moving to Nebraska for 3-4 years makes even less sense. Hopefully Brohm can close that deal. Would be nice is Weaver and Bell joined up so they could put some pressure on him. If he says no, I would love for Brohm to offer Romier Elliott from Warren. That kid is having a monster season.

Let’s pump the breaks a little on the playoff talk. I understand the excitement, but we’re 0-3 and have miles before we can compete with the osu of the world. You realize they stack four classes better than this together right? So does Michigan and psu.

You listed 3 teams not in Purdue’s division. I also point to UCF. That offense would be loaded to go with the ‘19 classes defense. It counts on landing certain players, but:

I said what I said.

I am sure Frost is selling Wandale on using him like he used DeAnthony Thomas at Oregon.

Ok... but look at what Purdue is doing on offense and what Nebraska has done. They won’t be able to focus on him at Purdue because of Moore (and Bell potentially). Nebraska was left much more than Brohm had when he arrived at Purdue and Purdue managed 7-6 with a bowl win. Purdue had a rough start but could just as easily be 4-0 as they are 1-3. Biggest loss was 4 points and 2 losses were last second field goals (not taking into account officiating decisions). Brohm has given the keys to Moore as a true freshman and they are really going to need a RB next year. The two trajectories and situations heavily favor Purdue.

Good recruiters, like Brohm and Frost, sell a vision of what could be. I do agree that Frost inherited a lot more talent than CJB though, and am surprised they are struggling so much.

You're right, Alabama and Nebraska lead for Wandale; hope he goes to Bama (Link)

We have a good shot at Bell, which is probably because outside receiver is more of a need than slot.

I have no doubt Brohm can close on the skill positions. The bigger challenge will be slowing the pipeline of big uglies to places like Iowa, Wisconsin, MSU, etc.

Not really. They start 6 seniors and 3 juniors on defense.
Again though, similar situation to Purdue. Those guys were the leftovers of a poor coaching staff that had little to no development.

I think what it potentially shows is that Frost HAS to have good to great talent to compete. He had that at Oregon and had it at UCF given you had Milton and multiple other high draft picks. He also was only at UCF for two years and had a heavy amount of O'Leary's players for his two season run. Nebraska, right now, has top talent in that program given their recruiting rankings being top 4 or 5 in the conference since 2012.

On the other side, Brohm doesn't have to have good to great talent to be competitive and win. He and his staff have shown an ability to develop talent and get the most out of that talent. As the talent level continues to increase at Purdue, the results under Brohm will continue to get better.

What Frost has at Nebraska is either a bigger push against his style and the players he has currently or the players in the program just aren't that good. If that's the case, I think Frost has a bigger build that he wants to admit and given his words to the press over the last week...he is feeling the pressure already.

I think Frost is a very good coach but he has mainly been to places where talent isn't an issue (Northern Iowa-FCS, Oregon, and UCF).

Mershawn Rice says hello! Also don't sleep on Bonner and Taylor redshirting this season.

Hell this isn't even mentioning Sparks and Amad Anderson who will play on the outside

Yeah, we could be really stacked there. Would like to see a little more out of Sparks right now. Think he's due for a big game.

I think teams are realizing he is a legitimate deep threat and the last thing you want is to get in a track meet with a Brohm offense. I think teams will key in on trying to contain Purdue's deep passing and making Purdue go on long and sustained drives. Purdue has scored rather quickly on their scoring drives this year with big plays from all across the board. I imagine, at some point, Sparks is going to get a favorable matchup where he will get some long balls tossed his way.

I think other teams are trying to scheme him out...which opens up Moore, Zico and Wright.

Now teams will have to scheme to take out Moore, which will help Sparks tremendously

Its ok. Coming off our national championship in 2021, we will be loaded with talent to compete at these places. Boiler up!
