GRADES AND SUCH
• Aidan O'Connell graded impeccably, his best game of the season my a wide margin, and he graded really well at Iowa and vs. Illinois as well.
Greg Long was Purdues' second-highest-graded player with his second-best game of the season by this measure. His best grade came against UConn, if you want to count that.
Jackson Anthrop and David Bell were third and fourth. As brilliant as Bell was vs. Michigan State, keep in mind that his grade his weighed down by a couple drops, and he also didn't grade well as a run-blocker in this one, as little as that mattered.
• Just noticed that last week was Gus Hartwig's highest-graded game of the season by a mile. He graded well this week as well.
• On the flip side, neither of the right tackles graded well, Eric Miller or Cam Craig, and Zander Horvath's grade obviously got docked for the fumble.
PURDUE PASSING GAME
• O'Connell was 8-of-11 for 148 yards and two scores throwing the ball 10 or more yards down the field.
• His passing chart ...
Clean: 30-41, 397 yards, two touchdowns (close second grade)
Pressured: 10-13, 139, TD
No Blitz: 33-43, 418, 3 TD (best grade)
Blitz: 7-11, 118
• Purdue used playaction on 23 percent of its dropbacks, which I think might be slightly less than usual, and averaged more yards per attempt without it than with it. 10.1 yards without and 9.2 with.
• The Boilermakers were 9-9 on screen passes for 145 yards and a touchdown, averaging 16.1 yards per attempt, including at least two big plays.
Something doesn't add up here, though, because O'Connell is shown to be 7-of-7 throwing behind the LOS over the middle. The trick-play screen to Jackson Anthrop — assuming they categorized it as a screen — was completed to the left hash. So I don't know.
• One drop for Purdue. The one by David Bell. They did not categorize his near touchdown as a drop, which we only mention because Bell himself called it a drop.
• Purdue totaled 289 yards after the catch.
• Purdue completed 11 of its 16 targets of Bell, 6-6 to Anthrop and 3-3 to Broc Thompson
RUNNING GAME
• Purdue accumulated 53 yards after contact, an average of a pretty minimal 1.89 yards per attempt.
• Purdue averaged six yards on five attempts running over left guard.
PURDUE DEFENSE
Snap Counts
Defensive Line
George Karlaftis 62
Branson Deen 54
Lawrence Johnson 50
Jack Sullivan 32
Kydran Jenkins 28
Bryce Austin 15
Damarjhe Lewis 13
DaMarcus Mitchell 9
Joe Anderson 3
Prince Boyd 2
Linebacker
Jalen Graham 66
Kieren Douglas 63
Jaylan Alexander 61
OC Brothers 10
Secondary
Dedrick Mackey 67
Jamari Brown 66
Marvin Grant 57
Cam Allen 44
Chris Jefferson 34
Sanoussi Kane 1
GRADES AND SUCH
• Purdue's highest-graded defensive player? You guessed it: Jack Sullivan. George Karlaftis is close behind, followed by — surprisingly to me — Cam Allen, despite a below-average tackling grade. Jaylan Alexander and Chris Jefferson round out the top five.
Marvin Grant struggled, these grades suggest.
PRESSURE
• Payton Thorne was just 1-of-6 for 12 yards and an interception on the six dropbacks he was deemed to have been blitzed. Whether PFF only counts blitz snaps where the blitz affects the play, we don't know.
• Jack Sullivan was credited with four pressures and two sacks.
The mainstream statistics credit Purdue with only one sack for the game. PFF gives them four.
TACKLING
• Purdue missed 13 tackles, four by Marvin Grant
• Kenneth Walker got 90 of his yards — an average of 4.09 per attempt — after contact.
PASS D
• Michigan State connected on only four of 10 targets to Jayden Reed against six different Purdue players.
• Payton Thorne was 3-5 throwing 20-plus yards in the air.
