Has Freshman TE Darius played at all yet this year or is his redshirt still available?
As long as the player has not played a single snap after the third game, that player is eligible for a red shirt season as long as a prior RS was not awarded. He hasn't been given a redshirt, but I don't think he has any stats and I am not sure if he has actually played or not. I don't know if a redshirt is something you can claim retroactively though or if it has to be declared before the season (unless it's medical).
Thats not the way it works anymore. If he plays 1 snap, he has to have a medical reason for not playing. Otherwise the shirt is wasted. I thought I saw his name mentioned on special teams.Thats not the way it works anymore. If he plays 1 snap, he has to have a medical reason for not playing. Otherwise the shirt is wasted. Happened to Antavian Edison.
When did they shift from that 3 game grace period to zero snaps? I know coaches had wanted to shift it to four games but not necessarily the first four (when Alabama plays an FCS team in week 9 for example).Thats not the way it works anymore. He shows as playing against OU, Michigan and Minnesota.I thought I saw his name mentioned on special teams.

My understanding is all redshirts are effectively retroactive. It is not a gameday status that has to be declared or requires a player not to dress. At the end of the season, if a true freshman has not logged any snaps, then they have 4 more years of eligibility. He hasn't been given a redshirt, but I don't think he has any stats and I am not sure if he has actually played or not. Agree, but my understanding is that once they step on the field for one snap they can no longer redshirt. They can dress every game and even travel but once that first snap is in the books it's game over. How serious does the medical reason need to be? In the past they would make up just about anything.
Needs to be more than a nagging injury.
Do they require a doctor's note or something?
I don’t remember the standard, but they need to be ruled out for a significant number of games. Obviously you can game the system, but an ankle sprain won’t do jt
