Darian DeVries to IU

I liken him to the Odom hiring. Like Odom, I have nothing bad to say about him. I just thought Indiana could do better. He doesn’t have the wow factor or the belief that he is a long term solution. I guess IU is just not the draw it once was.

If I was the IU athletic director I would have hired Steve Alford 20-25 years ago. Obviously his name has been named many times and he has had many opportunities to apply for the job. But he has maintained his distance and preferred to coach elsewhere.

I feel bad for West Virginia. They have a good program but seems to be a stepping stone for coaches with eyes going elsewhere!

First, Alford told IU he would never come back after he was lied to when RMK was fired. Fact. He should have been hired at that time.

Maybe WVU will be even better now that Devries is gone. Not many on the IU forum like the hire, so he's already behind. IU once again settled after missing out on others.

Wow! Talk about anticlimactic.

He stepped down from first team out to second team out. Weird decision.
Money...lots of it...talks very loudly. Dolson got lucky in FB, but this may come back to haunt him a long time.

Devries worked cheap at WVU getting 2.1 million per with a WVU buyout of 37% of his remaining salary.

LOL...
From wanting Steven, Few, Jay Wright, TJ Otzelberger, Beard to.....Devries.

That's pretty far down the barrel. LMAO...
It's was a no, no thanks, please, no, F*ck off, and Hell NO!

Damn, getting turned down that many times has to sting.....but.....but we have banners, NIL money and the BEST fan base. 🤣 😂

He runs an electrifying offense. 😂

I think it's a solid hire for Indinia. Now, can he meet the unrealistic expectations of the fanbase? Time will tell. Interesting that DeVries son (Tucker) was put on ice after playing 8 game (maximum for a medical redshirt). So, gets WVU NIL and gets an additional year to play elsewhere. I'm in MVC country, and he was player of the year for two years. A good player that should help IU.

I think I read his buyout was around $4.5 mil and they also had to pay the buyout from Drake. I didn’t see what he is being offered by IU?

I was thinking beard or pearl. Or Sampson might come back. Sampson did pretty good at IU before his ncaa sanctions! Or maybe Huggins.

I guess IU has run out of former players. This is kind of depressing and a slap in the face to IU fans.

It’s my speculation, but from what I’ve read, seen, and heard, if Mike Woodson had been retained by Indiana for a fifth year, there would’ve been a significant chance that Trent Sisley could have flipped to Purdue. Now that Woodson is a goner? He’s more committed to Indiana than ever.

100% true.

As an IU fan I completely agree-IU hiring Alford would make Purdue fans very happy. But he’s not going to be considered.

True

Agreed, they can do a ton better than him(Alford).
Yes.

My take? Beard is extraordinarily unlikely, and May is not the most likely final answer.

True.

Also true? The post where @tjreese nailed it. He said that there are many good choices that aren’t as famous or obvious to people not following the whole country’s coaches. IU just hired a 49 year old that was the top assistant for McDermott, and as a head coach drastically improved both programs he was at, including at a power 5 program this year and without his best player.

So I’ll bow out of this thread, but for those that actually want research Devries’ accomplishments? This is a really solid hire.

This is a very solid hire. Indiana fans that don't like it just like to complain. Last year Louisville hired Pat Kelsey who had a long history of success. Kentucky(a better program than Indiana) hired Mark Pope who was just coming off losing to an 11 seed at BYU and has to win an NCAA tourney game. Swing for the fences to begin with and I'm assuming they made it to about #5 on their list. The NCAA screwing West Virginia just happened to really help us.

I'm happy with the hire. Will be interesting to see the roster built. Guarantee Tucker follows.

Meh, fifth or sixth choice

To be honest, I didn’t even know who who he was, prior to seeing the news. It doesn’t mean that he won’t be a good hire, though. Only time will tell.

Has he ever won a round of 64 game?
Round of 64? No. Won a first 4 game in 2021. Which was Drake's first tourney bid since 2008(08 was their only bid from 72 through DeVries first 2 years in 2020). Never lost less than 20 at Drake. Worried about it? Nope. Dude can clearly coach and is apparently a hard worker unlike the last guy.

Alford begged many times for the job, but IU did not want him.

I don’t know how long the AD has been at WVU, but Hugginsand Beilein both coached there. I see this coach has knocked off some good teams and you don’t do that with smoke and mirrors. Apparently his son is quite a ball player and so that’s definitely going to help IU.

The bigger name coaches are not going to go to IU. The risk is worse than the reward particularly for those coaches that have a good situation going with teams doing well. They’ve established the recruiting area. They’re known in the area and their program is doing well. Why would they want to start over? The hire was in the realm of possibilities. Based upon the possible coaches that would move to IU he probably checked many boxes.

I know nothing about him and he will either work out or not. I believe it will be an improvement over Woodson, who seemed like a nice guy. He is not a Beard and may or may not ever be, but Butch I doubt would take the job as he will be in demand in more places as his legal issue fade. Beard may have thought too much of Knight to go to the place that all of a sudden found Knights behavior a problem when IU started losing more games..,and that may never have been a concern.,,

I’m not his doctor but Beard is an alcoholic. That’s a problem, especially since IU had to dump Kevin Wilson for similar issues.

Now there's a name that brings back some memories.....Butch Beard, former Louisville Cardinal and teammate of Wes Unseld. Played one season on a really bad early 70's Cavaliers team, but was an all-star.....won a NBA Championship with Rick Barry and company in '75. Really good guard.
