Seems crazy to think about since he just came on board in 2013, but does anyone have any info on when Daniels may be stepping down? Obviously he is exempt from the mandatory age 65 limit, but is there any sort of limit in place for him? I recall when he was brought in there was talk of it being a minimum of 5 years. Well, that is only 2 years away now. Could we have a new AD, new fb coach, and a new Pres in consecutive years??

Maybe Daniels can pass the torch to Mike Pence ! Wow, wouldn't that be terrific?
You betcha !?!?!?

I'd be surprised if he stayed more than 5 years.

I'd like to see Purdue hire a more "long term" President. Both Daniels and Cordova were hired on the older side. Would be nice to have a President stay more in the 7-10 year range vs. 5 year.

The timing just feels a bit unsettling to me. Unless he/she is a Daniels clone, the next president will have their own vision regarding the role of athletics at Purdue. And how might this "lame duck president" situation hurt bringing in strong AD candidates? And once that AD is on board, might this uncertainty also factor into a decision to not buyout DH2 contract after another lost season?

Ideally you'd want to stack the layers from the top down, starting with stability of a president who understands what a competitive football program can bring to the U, then an ambitious AD who is enabled and inspired to work for that president, then a good coach who is ready to step into that support structure. Unless you believe (and more importantly, potential AD candidates believe) the BoT sets the priorities and the President is just the poster boy, I think this situation could really throw a wrench into setting the program back on the right track.

You're right - obviously you want to start from the top down, not work bottom up.

The thing is though, it's not like a university president needs to hire the AD or be the President's "guy". And there are plenty of ADs that inherit coaches that they are a-ok with. The obvious point is that if you have the right people in place, it doesn't matter. Purdue's been slow to react in general - nobody wanted to be the person to shake things up. Hazell has basically done the same stuff Hope did, Burke has let things remain constant and Daniels let things remain constant.

Having some longterm plan is great in theory, but if it holds up the process, it's not. We've already waited too long on Hazell and you can argue the writing was on the wall for Hope as well before things were done (and not that he should have been fired a year earlier, but if you knew you were going to fire him midway through the season - the firing/hiring process seemed to be a disaster knowing they had a few months to work with).

I think (and hope) you are right about the lack of effect on any decision to replace the coach. If the new AD feels he needs to make a change in 2017 he probably will. I was just uncertain about the funds he would have available for the buyout given the lame duck president situation. I am certainly not advocating holding up the process, just morbidly curious if that might throw a monkey wrench into the decision, particularly if he wins 1 or 2 more games this year.

The effect on the AD hiring I am less optimistic about.. Understood it is what it is at this point, but do you think potential AD candidates would factor the uncertainty of a lame duck president situation into their decision to come to Purdue? This isn't Ohio State or Notre Dame where you know whoever the president is there is going to be a priority placed on the football program. Of course, you might also argue we have nowhere to go but up from that perspective, but an AD candidate may not feel that way or even be spooked by the possibility of a new president and BoT going even further off the deep end with austerity measures and "Ivy League" mentality.

I believe Hope was fired/Hazell hired when there was an interim president? Not sure though.

If a republican is the next president Daniels becomes Secretary of Education, otherwise he gets his contract extended and we are stuck with him for more than 5 years.

What really scares me is that the BOT has already placed a priority of sorts on the football program and it has still gone to hell in a handcart with absolutely no relief in sight.

It doesn't matter if you have all the money in the world, if you have a poor leader at the helm...the fate is inevitable. Look at Apple when Steve Jobs left and then came back...Apple is what it is today because of amazing leadership. I could come up with some clear leadership issues with tons of money behind him, but I'm not about to start a political battle on a sports board.

Of sorts.. Commitment comes in different forms. But looking past lip service what evidence do we have? The $60M facility project is nice.. but nothing amazing for an average B1G program. And, without question, DH2 would not still be around after 6-30 at any other school with priority on the football program, even if it meant moving aside the long time AD. It's happening, I realize, but at a glacial pace..

If Trump won I don't see him heading to DC. Trump wouldn't want someone who cant even find a competent AD to run a football program.
