What will it take for Dakota to make an NBA roster, even as an undrafted agent?

Currently

- Contender for BIG All Defense team
- 49% three point shooter
- 4 assists / game, 3:1 assist to turnover ratio

Sorry Snow, but it's not happening. He can be a very good college player and pro player (overseas, NBDL, etc.), but the NBA isn't in the cards for him.

I am a huge DM fan. Been one since I saw him start to scratch his potential his freshman year during the B10 season. But I just don't think his offensive game is there for the NBA. IU's guards really shut him down. To his credit he never forced anything. But the guards he would see in the NBA are more athletic and smarter than the iu guards. Its honestly a compliment. You could see them really hounding him all game. They were afraid of him going off.
The only way I could see an NBA career is if next year he adds a driving ability to his game where he could take a guard one on one and get to the rim consistently. If he had Ray's first step from Ray's junior year on the drive, he would probably be averaging 17-18 point a game and the team would be undefeated. That's the only major thing I see missing from his game but its a big thing for the NBA.
With all of that being said, he has improved so much from year to year he might add the drive to his game. Maybe he can do some special training or something to improve that first step over the summer.

Agree for the most part. Consistency is key (for Vince too).

Don't see it. Good solid college player but not close to NBA material. More likely to have an exceptional coaching career if he chooses to stay in basketball. How'd you like to have him and Robbie on your staff?

About the only place I could see is San Antonio. Where all they'd expect is for him to guard and hit an open three. Kinda like Bruce Bowen. I'm not saying he can guard in the NBA. Just that's all they'd really need.

Slim and none. That said, I love him as a college player, think he might make a good coach and/or be successful at whatever he does. He is that kind of young man.

Yeah... no.

Love him as a college player though.

Staukas was a lottery pick. Diebler was mid second round

Staying in the league is one thing. Getting a chance by making an NBA team is another.

This is Dakota's first healthy season, and if he can continue to make jumps as a plus defender, plus passer, plus shooter....I hope he at least gets a crack at making a roster, even as an undrafted deep rotation player.

Where did Jon Deibler end up? I feel like they are the same player except Deibler was a little taller

Yeah, he is an inch or two taller than DM. Jon Diebler ended up not sticking around in the NBA for very long. If he's still playing, I would imagine he's overseas. Mathias is a better passer than Diebler but without looking, I'm pretty sure Diebler's career shooting percentages in college are all better than Mathias' up to this point.

Not really. Diebler as a junior was 42% from threes, 1.5 assists, and 1:1 assist to turnover

In terms of numbers, Mathias as a junior (49%, 3.9 assists, 3:1) is comparable or even edges out Diebler as a senior (50%, 2.4 assists, 2:1)

I wrote career shooting percentages.

It's not April 1. Wtf?

Great OP. I've been thinking about this for about a year know. We all know that he doesn't fit the NBA mold but he is a gamer that would help a lot of NBA teams. I personally watch almost every Clippers game and I'd love to see him on their second team ~ 9th / 10th player in a few years. He doesn't make many mistakes. Can shoot better than most. Has added a drive to his game, but hardly ever uses it. He makes others better and is the BEST passer Purdue has had in a long while. Change his name to Mathiaskouskas and the rest of the NBA will think he's from Greece or Lithuania. Haha. Would absolutely love to see DM in the NBA someday. If DT can be President, then DK can be on an NBA roster...

I'm sorry, but I think some of you guys are self-deluded or out of your minds.

Steve Alford was a great shooter/scorer and a pretty good passer in college. He played like one or two seasons in the NBA before being waived. The reason: he wasn't quick or athletic enough. Mathias is the same except he's not nearly the prolific college scorer that Alford was. Even if someone is a niche guard in the NBA, they still have to be able to defend 1-on-1. Mathias won't be able to stay with most (if not all) NBA-caliber guards.

Career shooting % shouldnt matter. Dakota made a jump later than Diebler shouldnt matter if he has a better last two years. I don't think Dakota has NBA athleticism but hey Nick Zeisloft made the Pacers training camp roster somehow so anything is possible.

If DM goes to the NBA his jump from this year to next you would have to be huge. I mean Senior year balling like E Moore huge...Hummel before first ACL tear against Minny huge.

Urm...this actually supports the affirmative to my question of "what will it take for Mathias to get a crack at the NBA

Despite opinions to the contrary defense does matter in the NBA. Unless you are an off the charts scorer you better be a good defender. Alford did not and could not play D...at all. If he was even moderately decent defender his stay in the league would have been longer.

defence unfortunately requires athleticism.

Two yeas ago, I predicted Dakota would get drafted 51st overall, a la Jon Diebler.

I see a lot of parallels to their 2011 team that won the B1G. Swanigan/Sullinger, Deshaun Thomas/Vince Edwards, and Haas/Lauderdale (not as tall, but a bruiser).

If you just want to see him make a preseason roster or play in the Summer League a couple of times, I could see that being possible. The whole point of hoping to make an NBA team/be in the NBA, however, is to be good enough that you can stick around for awhile (ex: be a rotation player for a minimum of 5 years). That's what I don't think is going to happen for Mathias.

They were similar in that Matta liked to surround Sullinger with four effective 3 point shooters (Deibler, Buford, Lighty, and Craft). OSU shot .423 from 3 for the year which was very close to Purdue's current .418. That team was very talented, but also benefited from Robbie Hummel's second ACL tear, IMO.
