Cuonzo Resigns

http://www.csnbayarea.com/ncaa/cal-mens-head-basketball-coach-cuonzo-martin-resigns

I've seen reports linking him to both the Missouri and Illinois jobs.

I have to say, I'm a little surprised. I know Zo is from East Saint Louis and all, but he seemed to be bringing in talent at Cal. I'm not sure that I'd say either Mizzou or Illinois is a better job right now. Plus, that would be four head coaching gigs in 10 years. Is Zo following the Tom Penders coaching plan?

Illinois would be way better job. Cal loses all their good players this off-season. Cal is not a very good job right now.

Mizzou offered him ...
Wow...and it just seemed like it was yesterday he talked about how well he loved the area. Hard to believe the Cal would make his seat hot. I wonder if there is family illness or other reasons to bring him back closer to home.

In looking at what information is available, it's his desire to be closer to home, TJ.

From the Cal AD:

"Cuonzo Martin informed me this morning that he is resigning to accept a position at another school," Cal athletics director Mike Williams said. "We put forth our best effort to retain him, but he told me it wasn't about Cal, rather a strong desire to move closer to home. We appreciate all that Cuonzo has done with our men's basketball program over the past three seasons, creating excitement inside Haas Pavilion, guiding our team to a pair of postseason appearances and improving the academic performance of our student-athletes."

Wow! Hope he is a Tiger rather than an Illini...

I would have to believe as the CAL AD said, Cuonzo was not fired. but he accepted another job . My money based on the contract Illinois gave tubby Smith, and also their current incoming recruiting class, that Illinois made Cuonzo an offer he couldn't refuse. Being given a nice paycheck and the incoming Illini class are two very good incentives. he knows the East St Louis recruiting bed very well. Illinois would be a very good match.

His Wiki page is updated to show he is Mizzou HC.

Good, now he can steal some recruits from the Illini going forward. Maybe us too (not so good).

Self got Deron Williams out of the Dallas area. Looking back at ESPN 2002 rankings, Williams was ranked #100, Dee Brown #22, and James Augustine #99. David Teague was ranked #52 and Melvin Buckley #91, crazy.

Can't see a beloved member of the successful mid-90's teams (I was at PU those years) being asked for or seeking out the IU job, but I could be wrong (money talks).

Nor could I imagine the IU faithful being willing to accept Zo. They still believe if they offer $5-7 Million per annum that their Messiah will come...

So has already fought a tough health battle. Sometimes home and family carry more weight after such tests.

It's nice that they named their arena after Isaac.

Not sure if anyone saw that Zo hired Micheal Porter Sr and evidently his son never signed the NLI so guess his 2017 class will be okay

I saw that Lorenzo Romar was finally fired at Washington after doing less with more the past 4 to 5 seasons than anyone not named Crean. So Porter's dad already left UW for Missouri? That's a good pickup for suitcase Cuonzo if that ends up being the case, but Porter Jr. is likely one-and-done so then what is he going to do? I think Missouri's AD is giving Morgan Burke a run for his money on coaching hires.

"suitcase Cuonzo"? Wow. Your hatred runs deep.

that's an interesting way to create a recruiting class, and also seal an interview for a contract. You hire me and I'll bring the #2 player in the nation here by hiring his dad as an assistant. So, what happens to the dad after his son leaves?

He has another highly regarded son on the way I believe.
