CARMEL — Sorry, forgot to post stuff earlier today from the morning and afternoon at the Charlie Hughes Shootout, for which Carmel was the venue of choice today.
JADEN IVEY'S DAY
Jaden Ivey was solid today in two wins for Mishawaka Marian, the first over Trey Galloway's Culver Academies team and the second over Westview, which has one of the better players in the state in Charlie Yoder.
Ivey, by my count, scored 11 vs. Culver. Trey Galloway did a solid job on him, as could be expected, but also Culver paid some secondary-defender attention to him that as the game went on.
In the afternoon, Ivey scored 19 against Westview, making a bunch of the jumpers, getting to the rim and registering a bunch of assists. Toward the end of the game, Ivey, who didn't initially guard Yoder, moved onto him defensively. Yoder got his off Ivey, but the Purdue commit also took a charge in the backcourt off him and later forced a second turnover via backcourt pressure.
Another good win for Marian, and one Ivey fought through because in the first half, he got slammed by a (legal) screen and hurt his shoulder. It looked — and sounded — bad, but Ivey obviously came back in a few minutes later, only to get poked in the eye, then trucked by Yoder on the aforementioned charge.
JALEN WASHINGTON'S DAY
The phenom from Gary West Side played on in the second of the two games his team played today, sitting out the first for load management. He played a lot of basketball in June, including the Elite 100 in St. Louis a couple days ago, last week's IBCA Clinic and at least three college team camps.
In the game he played in, vs. Cathedral, he didn't make any jumpers, but did some positive things as a rim protector, penetrator off the dribble and rim finisher. He's so talented and physically gifted and so young that it almost doesn't matter that he doesn't make shots, because it's obvious he can and he gets whatever he wants oftentimes. I don't know if that makes sense or not.
Some college coaches might have skipped out for his afternoon game after he sat out in the morning, because only Purdue and Iowa were there.
TAYSHAWN COMER IS AND UP-AND-COMER
Purdue's gonna want to closely watch Cathedral 2022 point guard Tayshawn Comer, and it already is. Comer looks to me like a high-major guy to come, and he only just turned 15 around the start of sectionals, per his coach, the venerable Jason Delaney, for whom Comer started every game this season as a freshman.
Asked about Purdue, Comer said, "I love Purdue, but I'm keeping my options open."
Jack Owens has already offered for Miami (Ohio) and a bunch of Big Ten schools are looking already.
PURDUE
Matt Painter was in Maryland on Sunday to watch Hunter Dickinson. Brandon Brantley spent the whole weekend out there, I think, while Micah Shewsberry was in Indy start to finish. After being in Indy Friday night, Steve Lutz spent the rest of the weekend in Chicago, where the headliner was Max Christie.
