Congratulations Minnesota

I simply cannot agree. Swan carried this team the whole game. Nobody else did practically anything. If we didn't have Swan on this team we would have lost that game by 30 points. It would have been a monumental blowout of epic proportions. The defensive effort was embarrassingly bad. Minnesota had their way with this team every which way. Not saying Minnesota played anything but well but all teams Purdue plays in the big ten are going to play well. Purdue played sloppy overall. Nobody on that team has any emotion or intensity except Swan. Today was a disaster out there.

Minny played really, really well tonight. Let's give credit where credit is due. They played a great game, and they had several players exceed their norms for this win. Minnesota WON this game much more than we LOST it.
Realistic and spot on post. Sadly the negatwatts simply are not smart enough to see it.

don't act like a fan from a team in S. Indiana....

Totally agree with the thread. Just returned from the game, and I thought young Pitino had his squad playing with total confidence. They could have folded when down 7, yet made shot after tough shot. Fact is, they seem to have perfected the style into which college ball has evolved: High screens, pick and pop, pick and roll. Mason may become 1st Team All Big 10. We had no answer for him; may Basil have been a better option? This was no fluke; Minny will be heard from!

Minny barely lost to Michigan State in overtime. And MSU will be in the dance and stand at 2-0 in the league. This wasn't an upset in any way.

I am upset when you don't consider it as an upset. Minnesota?? really... Can we please bring back baby Boilers and dominate all other BIG10 teams?

They're not 2-0.

This loss may not look that bad in a month. Kind of like Iowa last year.

That is completely false. At tip we were a 14 1/2 point favorite playing at home. It was most certainly an upset.

I don't know why people feel a need to try and "cover" for the team. We lost a game that we shouldn't have. There is no other way to put it. I'm not jumping off the ledge or losing my mind like some others, but let's not act like this wasn't a game that should have been a win.

A little bit of both. Generally, I agree. Minnesota played very well. At the same time though, we played poorly. If we play an average game, we win a close one.

I'm sorry you're upset, but IMO this wasn't a true upset. Purdue played well but not great...but good enough to win. Minny played well and had an answer for everything Painter and crew threw at them. That is not an upset my friend, but a great game by a team too many are throwing stones at as "not good enough" to beat Purdue. As I've said all along, the B10 is down if you believe that only a few are good enough to win, but with Nebraska, Minny, to a degree Northwestern, and a couple of others showing much improvement, I don't know if it's down that much. The old saying "you better bring the A game every night" has never been more prophetic.

This is what happens when you've already decided this early in the league season how good a team is or isn't. We all know that the season is long and grueling. We may look back and see Minny is just bad loss...or we may look back and say after that game the Boilers trended upward...or that was when Minny came out. Who knows right now? Nobody. I'm not going to minimize this loss, nor will I call the season over.

I disagree with this. Minnesota played very well. We didn't play all that poorly. Hell. Swanigan is part of the team and he played a phenomenal game.

Sometimes you just have to acknowledge that the other team has talent and is also trying to win the game. Mason was awesome for them.

What is your definition of an upset?

PU favored by 14 1/2 playing at home and gets beat. I didn't make up that spread, people that do it for a living (and do it well) did. I'm curious what parameters would need to be met for you to call a game result an upset?

First of all, Minny came in very much under-rated and that is a fact. I've had teams truly upset teams they shouldn't have and I've had teams be upset by teams that should have never been in the ball game. An upset is when a team considered very good gets defeated by a team considered not very good because that lesser team finally got it for that moment. Neither description fits yesterday's game as both were solid teams coming into that game. If I believed "Spreads", I'd be very rich man because I'd gamble a lot more than I do.

While I agree that the Gophers played well, I don't think we did on either end. Only shot 40 percent and 14 turnovers. I also am disappointed that after Mason torched them last year, and they supposedly he was a point of emphasis to stop and they had worked on it, that he had a career game against us.

Minnie may be a top team this year, but you have to hold serve at home. Especially against teams you only play once.

Whether you "believe" in point spreads, doesn't negate the fact that they exist and represent the perceived strengths of teams. You don't have to actually wager on games to understand that a 14 1/2 spread in a conference game is a lot. For the favored team to not only not cover the points but to actually lose the game outright is most definitely an upset.

Put it a different way: Let's just say that for some unknown reason Vegas made yesterday's game a pick'em game instead of having any spread. Besides a parent from one of the MN players, who else would have put any money on MN? The answer is no one. That makes it an upset when MN wins the game.

You're definition basically says it's only an upset when you determine that a very good team got beat by a not very good one. That seems to put a lot of value on one persons perception of the strengths of teams. It would seem to make more sense to base it on something that takes into account the perceptions of literally millions of people formulated into a value called a point spread.

15th ranked team at home vs unranked team, 14 pt favorite. You right, no upset at all

I know you gotta love these people in here poo pooing this like little ninny lickersz. It was a huge upset. Embarrasing. Purdue was favored by 15 points at home and got slapped like Minny's red headed step child. That may of been a season killer loss. Minny wrecked Purdue's last national title potential team by putting down Hummel and ruining his career and this is how this team shows respect by playing like a gimp out there? Minny wrecked Purdue's season again. It's an eyesoar loss on the resume. It was a devastating loss.

40% shooting, 32% from three, 14 TO's, gave up 90+ points. Only Caleb and PJ played to their average or above. Sorry, Minnesota outplayed us but that was not one of our better efforts.

Yea well you shouldn't expect the same results as when we're playing Norfolk State. It's big boy season now and things won't come as easy. A knowledgeable fan would adjust their expectations accordingly.

What should our "adjusted expectations" have been for last night? I can't believe that after watching that you don't think we played poorly. Are you expecting us to shoot 40% from the floor and 32% from 3 and give up 90 points for the rest of the "big boy season"? That sure isn't my expectation, I hope it's not yours either.

To be fair, only 73 points in regulation, but poor shooting and TOs hurt us as not being able to stop the Gophers when we needed to.

My expectations were based on their performance against Villanova, ND, ASU, Auburn, Iowa, etc., which was much better than yesterday both aesthetically and statistically. Give it up dude, they didn't play well. Hopefully, it was just a bad day at the office.

Competition had alot to do with how we played. Minnesota is decent and they played really well. I thought our play was fairly average. Not good. Not a disaster. Then again I had more modest expectations compared to some as was evident last week when others were speculating if this was Painter's best team ever or if they were even remotely comparable to last year.
