Congrats Coach Painter on the extension!

Unless this changes the buyout materially, this is irrelevant. If there was not a change to the buyout, it likely was done to allow Painter to tell recruits that he will be in Purdue for their entire career.

Anyone who understand how recruiting works knows that this was both inevitable and much needed.

The 2017 class is one of the deepest in a long time and Purdue could have as many as 5 or 6 open scholarships. You wanna recruit the top talent? Gotta ensure the kids that you'll continue to be there while they're there.

MP has his flaws, but he's still very young in terms of being a college basketball coach, and I have no doubt that he will continue to improve. From a recruiting perspective though, this was absolutely needed.

Glad to see we are extending both basketball coaches right before we hire a new AD. Smart planning by our crack Athletic Department!
I think that most AD candidates would be glad that the Painter extension is done and that they don't have to negotiate an extension as their first act of business, rather than being able to stay neutral on the long term coaching direction while focusing on the big issue, which is football.

Given the state of the football program, addressing football will be a priority that overshadows everything else that the new AD is responsible for. From a financial perspective, it is easily more important to get right than all other sports combined. While addressing the football program, the last thing that the new AD will need is instability in the men's basketball program.

Agree. A foregone conclusion for recruiting and great to get out of the way for a much needed focus/cure for the bell cow football.

I agree that this move should remove any concern that recruits may have about Painter's tenure. So here's what he has going for him in recruiting this critical 2017 class:

1) The knowledge that this was a core class for years.
2) Additional financial resources for recruiting since 2011.
3) A great deal of talent right in his backyard.
4) Plenty of PT for most of the highly rated targets.
5) A program on the upswing (top 20 last two years)
6) A chance to represent your country in the World university games.
7) And now, a virtual guarantee that he will be the coach throughout their career.

No excuses.

For those who feel very strongly about getting rid of Painter, there is no downside here. This sort of move should help recruiting. And if the new AD doesn't like the job MP is doing, he will find a new coach regardless of the contract situation. Happens all the time.

The only people who will be devastated by this are those people insisting that MP be fired now and a new coach be found before the 2016-17 season begins. But that is an unrealistic expectation that was never going to happen anyway, so ...
