After taking it down to the last hours, Caleb Swanigan has decided to stay at Purdue for his sophomore season.

The forward's decision became public at 3:50 p.m., ending days of speculation about whether he would stay at Purdue or continue toward the NBA Draft.

As a freshman, Swanigan started every game he played in, finishing third on the team scoring at 10.2 per game and nearly leading the Big Ten with an average of 8.3 per game.

The former McDonald's All-American and Indiana Mr. Basketball winner was named to the Big Ten's All-Freshman team and won league Freshman-of-the-Week honors three times.

During the NBA draft exploration process, he took part in workouts for the San Antonio Spurs, Minnesota Timberwolves, Phoenix Suns, New Orleans Pelicans, Houston Rockets, Indiana Pacers and Atlanta Hawks, in addition to taking part in the NBA's draft combine in Chicago.

Purdue forward Vince Edwards also declared for the draft, but withdrew on Tuesday.

I can finally STOP WATCHING for news every day and look forward to what seems to be a very good year this year!
A Strong Front Line & Better Guard Play with some seasoned shooting will help us content for a BIG Title and beyond. I am also ready to more beyond the first night in the NCAA...

so much for the expert opinions and inside info hehe. probably the best decision he will ever make. everyone told him he wasnt ready and he listened yay

Well, well. With both Edwards and Swanigan coming back, there will certainly be pressure to have a break-out season and a much better performance in the NCAA Tournament.

We'll see how it goes. The pieces seem to be there. Hopefully guard play will be more consistent.

Very excited to hear that he is coming back. He will get chances to compete against some good teams next season. You would think with Biggie coming back that Purdue will start the season as a top 25 team.

Big boost for us next year. Borderline top 25 team that can get better instead of a borderline bubble NCAA team IMHO.

Before analyzing NBA early entry.....and spring additions ....ESPN had Purdue ranked 16th next year. Purdue added Spike in spring and both early entry candidates returned.

Safe to say that Purdue will start out the season solidly in Top 25. Time will tell where they finish.

Will be interesting to see how the front court works next year. Haas is the only one that operates strictly in the post. I would say the preference for every other player is the perimeter. It will be different than last year when our offense almost always had either Hammons or Haas in the game so we always had someone operating as a post player. When Haas goes out this year, our offense will change.

I can see Biggie backing up Haas and hopefully if Taylor is able backing up Biggie.
Either way it's good to have him back. I know he has some head scratchers at times but in my opinion we were better with him on the floor for the most part. I mean how many frosh have we had that put up his numbers? I didn't see his aggressiveness as selfish either. I like having someone who wants to make a play. Isn't that what we have been lacking since Hummel left?

Welcome back Caleb! Glad to see it.

Agreed
Definitely top 25 with CS back

Also, there's still 3 scholarships open! I think one of them could be a grad transfer. I'm holding out hope for either Alec Peters, Jaron Blossomgame, or Marcus Lee to fill one of those scholarships. After that, the only thing on paper that would be missing would be an established "star" guard.

2016-2017:

1. Albrecht (RS Sr.)
2. Smotherman (RS Jr.)
3. Mathias (Jr.)
4. V. Edwards (Jr.)
5. Haas (Jr.)
6. Thompson (Jr.)
7. Taylor (RS So.)
8. Cline (So.)
9. Swanigan (So.)
10 C. Edwards (Fr.)
11. at least one more grad transfer (some possibilities listed above)
12. open
13. open

Boiler Up!

Don't forget about Kostas.

You're confident but I'm not sure that he'll be a Boilermaker. It sounds like he wants immediate playing time but I'm not sure that he would get significant PT battling for minutes with VE, Smotherman, Taylor, and Swanigan, along with the possibility of three-guard lineups (Thompson, CE, Albrecht, Mathias, and Cline all play into that) being used at times.

He won't get significant playing time at any high major program.

And if Peters doesn't go to the NBA, why would he transfer here? He'd only go somewhere where he'd be a sure-fire starter and can improve his NBA profile, but our front court is loaded.

He would transfer to Purdue because he wants to play for a championship-caliber team and also because he could still get significant PT:

In this scenario, player-by-player MPG projections:

1. V. Edwards: 25-30 MPG
2. Peters: 20-25 MPG
3. Swanigan: 20-25 MPG
4. Haas: 20-25 MPG
5. Mathias: 20-25 MPG
6. Thompson: 15-20 MPG
7. C. Edwards 15-20 MPG
8. Smotherman 10-15 MPG
9. Cline 10-15 MPG
10. Taylor 7-12 MPG
11. Albrecht? (healthy enough to play?)

I agree with the ratio but slide it up the scale a notch. I feel they could be as good as last year without Biggie. Just my optimism shining through I guess.

it will be interesting who comes in for haas. will it be taylor? will they do like the first few games last year and insert biggie there? both haas and swanigan need to work on defensive foot work as they both got used underneath when the opponent was quick. neither has as yet the blocking ability of hammons. lots of talent, hope we get it figured out and play up to potential with no early exit in ncaa

Purdue is a hell of a lot more likely to get Kostas than Peters, Lee or Blossingame.

Debbie Downer here or Ricky Realistic...

Smart choice Mr. Swanigan, then again it was really the only choice. You weren't getting picked. Come on back and prove yourself. Show them you are THE MAN. That's what big dog did. He said come along if you want to win.

We still have 3 open spots? It's May, fill out the roster coach. You can drive a semi with a flat tire or 2, but why would you want too. Use all of your available resources (schollies). With 10 players, I hope we don't get any suspensions, or the flu.

One thing that is a near certainty is that when Haas is out of the game we are going to see a different type of motion offense than when he is in the game. With either Taylor or Biggie you are essentially getting another 4 on the offensive end. The defensive side is where it will dictate that Swanigan guard the 5. I don't see many occasions where it is VE, 3 guards, and Taylor on the floor.

With Blossomgame, you're correct. I saw that he's staying at Clemson.

There hasn't been any news on KA for awhile now, so I don't necessarily think that he's more likely to commit than a high-quality grad transfer. He's been talking to other schools such as Marquette lately. I'm leaning more towards him not choosing Purdue vs. choosing them.

If Taylor has made a jump in his game, I could see them using that kind of lineup at times. I also can picture VE and Smotherman playing together for stretches. They have a lot of different lineup combinations that seem like they could be effective next season.
