For Harris, I think you have to shoot them when you're open. They'll eventually start falling. He's got a nice stroke. Otherwise, you end up with a guy who has no confidence and the other team plays the "Ethan Morton defense".

He's been playing college basketball for a month, I wouldn't shut him down yet. If he can't figure it out over the next six weeks I'd hope that Cox can step up and take some of those minutes.
I think if "shooting" was Matt's priority we would already see Cox with major minutes. My guess is that Matt thinks he has enough firepower and is interested in other things rather than firepower...AND may like Cox as a scorer coming off the bench.
Surely CMP gets some indicator in practice that their hitting baskets ( Cox / Harris ) or are the games so different they lose the confidence shooting?....just saying , seems they should be at least trying and or drive to the basket.
You may be right. I suspect that Matt believes that Gicarri is a much better shooter than he's shown to date. If Gicarri doesn't significantly increase his shooting percentage I don't think that Matt will continue to roll with him to the same extent that he has. I'm optimistic that GH can shoot 30%+ from three over the rest of the year.

Good point. I am curious on the drop off on minutes for Cox. He seemed like an instant bang off the bench.
If we are going to contend for a 3rd straight title, we need bench production from both of them.
I am sure what Painter sees in practice has given him what he needs to see on who deserves the minutes.

There is zero reason to believe that Painter cares about as a "scorer" off the bench. I think Painter knows where his bread and butter is and that's Smith, TKR and Loyer and that at least 2 of them will always be on the floor.
He has to care a little bit - you can't win games without some bench production. Ignoring the last game against Ole Miss when they gave us 2 points.
Regardless of what happens, getting 10 pts off the bench with current production from the Big 3, is a key come March to make a run....I think both Cox/Harris will figure it out.
Now if we are talking about yips, wonder what can change Furst's shot.
I disagree on Harris. He showed a lot in San Diego to demonstrate why he is getting the minutes and he wouldn’t have the green light if Painter didn’t know he can shoot. There is a huge mental component here and he’ll gain the confidence he needs as he works through this slump. 20 attempts is not a large sample to draw conclusions on.
One error for Mississippi is one player boxing out TKR was facing AWAY from the basket facing TKR to push him with two hands in his chest. If he was facing the basket butt into TKR he might have seen Colvin.
When you look at it TKR really created a huge lane being away from basket for Colvin and Heide as the players guarding them are left watching the shot , if I was Ole Miss coach I would be saying to my guys nice job boxing out guys ... game Purdue
Painter was already looking to redshirt one of the freshmen. The decision was taken out of his hands. I don't expect to see him on the floor this year unless something very unusual happens.

that is his bread and butter players. That is true. It is also true that he has mentioned in the past a few times that he wanted some scorers coming off the bench to keep somewhat consistent firepower on the floor. So there is more than zero reasons...at least one...what Matt has stated in the past.
Now, If Matt decides that he is going to have a short bench early in the season and not worry about the long season as he has in the past, then yes he may not hold the same concerns with the subs rotating in. I don't claim to know his mindset, but do know what he has mentioned on other occasions and assume until known different that he still wants some offensive production when he subs.
I'm saying Cox is scoring 4ppg. Painter isn't thinking, "I really need that scoring off the bench." As of now, Cox is just giving guys a breather. Cox did score 11 against Bama and 12 against Yale in back to back games.. but he's also scored 0 in 4. And outside of Bama and Yale has scored 7 points(4 in one and 3 another). I think Painter is just hoping Cox and Harris will give good enough minutes while Smith, Loyer and/or Colvin are out that it doesn't hurt the team. Play your role and play smart. Take what's given and don't force anything.
Again, I don't pretend to know Matt's thoughts, but he has on a few different occasions in different years mentioned that he didn't want the offensive lull by not having some offensive players on the court at all times. I don't know if he changed his mind or not on that perspective. I do know that when the game was over with Alabama that the Purdue players said they were not surprised at all with Cox in that he does that all the time in practice. Personally, I see Cox more wired to score than Giccari.
I think the bigger problem for Ole Miss was that they had two guys on Trey when Braden shot. I'm just glad that Trey slipped rather than screened as late as the clock was getting so no double would take place on Braden. Nothing they could do about Braden, but Trey wasn't getting anything easy...
Losing scoring when one subs is pretty normal. On the other hand, losing it ALL is not going to take a team far.
He may shoot +30%...I have no idea. He may only be a threat getting into the lane ...I don't know? However, I'm not convinced that with Trey, Braden, Fletcher and Cam another shooter is paramount. It may be "other things" that are more valued when mixed with four scorers (three shooters) and then if playing alongside Cox he helps duties as a PG. Myles is older and doing the things he needs to do. I doubt the line up changes and so Giccari's role (s) may be slightly different if subbing in with four starters than other players. I'm not worried with his shooting, but I like Cox's stroke a little better

We also know Matt has moved much more to an offensive team than years ago. No doubt rule change helped in that regard. We also know that basketball as a sport is made up of runs and if you can have your and prevent some of "theirs" it goes a long way to winning. What could cause runs? Turnovers, poor defense, bad shots and poor shooting...we all don't like to see those.

We see today so many "roles" on a team that we never see a true duplicate. Everyone has a little specialty it seems to me. You can go a few minutes with fewer scorers, but as you say...you need at least one on the perimeter. If he is just a driver...having one will not help IMO. If the better team you hope the bench holds serve.
Gicarri usually spells Loyer early as Loyer is usually the one who plays with the backups the most.
I think Harris will be fine. He attacks the basket which is an asset and I’m positive once he gets a bucket or two that his long range game will come back. Painter obviously sees these guys more than we do and I haven’t heard any concerns on how the freshmen have been shooting in practice. Braden has said that he has shooters all around so I would take that to include the young guns too.
As for the bench scoring, it will come. Both freshmen have shown the ability to score and their defense is certainly a strength for both. Having a cold game or two isn’t a concern of mine right now. These guys are 7 games in and still learning their roles. Having Heide and Colvin step up has taken the heat off the bench in my opinion. Painter has been able to leave three starters in at all times which keeps the offense running. The young guys just need to play good team defense and not turn the ball over and let the scorers do the scoring.
he goes in for Fletcher to defend and help with the ball handling mostly IMO. If paired with Cox, he probably is looking to score more. I'm very happy with the freshmen class and all three getting minutes right now. Every player brings something different and each has a different role and of course there is overlap in everyone is to rebound and defend, but some are better rebounders, others better defenders and so forth as in every team as you know
Way behind on this thread, but what are the chances against a dominant big we do what other teams did to us last year and throw Berg/Burgess in there to Hack the other teams big every time they get the ball in the low post? Thats 10 fouls we can give that has very little impact on our normal game plan to close out the game.
Interesting - especially if their big is not a good FT shooter. It might be even more fun to see if our hackers could get a call or two against their guy. Now things get interesting
I’m not sure how many dominant big men are on our schedule, but I agree with you conceptually. Keep Trey out of foul trouble by throwing Caleb,Will, and RB at top opposing centers. I don’t think we’ll see a steady diet of that. I suspect we will also see the Trey and Cam lineup with a heavy reliance on post doubles, but it’s nice to have some big bodies with available fouls to mix it up.
agree. Paint has to tell these guys that they don't have to score to get PT. Go in, play hard D, make good decisions, shoot when open or when feeling it.
These guys have both shown the ability to score, they just need to see a few go down again.
Reminds me a lot of Colvin last year who seems like he needed to jack up a few shots within a minute of getting in.
Giving other teams multiple trips to the FREE throw line for 1 and 1's and more importantly, 2 shot fouls after 10 is a BIG impact to any teams normal game.
Hack a Shaq "worked" because Shaq couldn't shoot free throws very well.
So maybe if getting dominated by a very good big who can't shoot free throws.

Yeah, I think you nailed it. Those guys don't need to be scorers but it's hugely helpful if they can score when the opportunity presents itself.
They just need to shoot when open and not be afraid of missing or making a mistake. But, if they're afraid to shoot, the D will let them jack up all the shots they want. Morton was afraid to shoot and we were playing 4 on 5 when he was on the floor.
Just play your ass off when you're in, score when you get a chance, do the little things and some dirty work, and you'll get PT.
At the end of the day any combo of Harris/Cox coming off the bench for relief bringing the ball down for Braden/Loyer/Colvin , scoring 6-12 combined and playing good D is what we need. They are cable of it too. Colvin and Heide bringing their athleticism and combined scoring of 20 with the 3 leaders is a formula for a good balanced game and what I think CMP is working towards.
The quickness of Penn is causing all kinds of problems if your shots not falling your in trouble especially on the road
Man game has gotten so athletic in players we looked like the junior varsity team playing tonight, well back to the drawing board. We need some 7'0" athletic guards and a 8ft Center apparently.
