Colvin and Hiede

Yesterday Myles started the game with a break away dunk and ended it with a fabulous two point in the paint , both of these guys have suddenly had the switch turned on ..
Was interested in your guys take on what happened from the rather quiet preseason first 3 games till post Marquette?
I sure can't answer what has clicked for them, but I am just glad it did. Still room to grow but by the end of the season they could all gel at just the right time.

He was on last night. He will be quiet offensively again.....and he will have great games again. But the great part is his D will be there. Considering last year's D, that is gigantic shift that is getting him the opportunity for his offense to be featured.

Agree BBG , sometimes a kid just needs that moment to realize he is a key part of something great. I think they both are feeling their identity. Will be fun to watch as they evolve. We don't need three great guys in the tournament we need five by season end.

Yeah his D has come into a valuable contribution where before it was non existent it seemed. I saw moments of I've yesterday. His alertness to anticipate Bradens shot missing and race to the basket versus watching the shot was something you just can't teach ...instinct.

IMO,
1. Lineup change to athletic "small ball'.
2. Opposing teams defensive gameplan is to put their 2 best defenders on Smith and Loyer.
3. Colvin and Hiede's "jackrabbit" athleticism vs the opposing team's 3rd and 4th best defenders equal what you are seeing.

So going forward, opposing teams will have to game plan on who to defend.

For Colvin let’s remember he is 19. We have seen the potential in him and he’s had this ability since he showed up. He had some incredible blocks and highlight reel dunks last year. There have been several people that has misread him, he has been reserved and while plays with emotion he doesn’t show it in his face with some people here unfairly questioning his desire or even suggesting he would transfer. Now painter did say he was someone he thought would have a jump. Earlier this year I think painter really challenged him and he did seem to get frustrated. He had to earn his starting spot. And that he did. I think it comes down to playing more minutes and getting used to the speed of the game as again he’s only 19. Ivey was the same way.

Heide is who I thought he was. Always a great rebounder and competent shooter. There were just not enough minutes for him last year. If you look at his per 40 minutes he’s showing a typical progression with 6.2 to 8.0 rebounds and 10.5 to 12.4 points.

good point, alot of guys get caught looking at a shot and not reacting, on Smith's miss I thought his instinct of going to the basket was great

Hummel mentioned this but they are both really benefiting from an unfortunate injury. Forced us small but this is the lineup we have all been asking for. This lineup can definitely score but rebounding will be a concern. All 5 return - look out!

I bet Painter told the team to go get Fn rebounds and good things will happen. Those 2 guys started the past 3 games and Purdue owned NC State and Ole Miss on the boards - partially because Ole Miss shot so well in the 2nd half. It's good to see Purdue getting the edge in rebounds against quality NCAA tourney teams.

On the rewatch @ 51-54 Loyer standing in the corner with his hands on his hips watching. Easy guard.

Coaches must of really gave it to him for that, on next trip down he is moving. Movement helps offense and TKR scores. Next trip down he moves to an open corner - he scores.

Yes. Rebounding was much better in this tournament. Smith is a natural rebounder with great instincts and with Colvin, Heide, and TKR stepping up and everyone boxing out, I think that the small ball lineup can win the rebounding battle more often than not.

Once Jacobsen is back, would be pretty surprised if Painter doesn't go back to him starting once he's ready. I don't think he likes the small ball.

I think Painter has put the most talented and experienced five on the floor with Kaufman-Renn, Heidi, Colvin, Loyer, Smith. I think Harris and Cox and Burgess are talented as well…but lack the experience as freshman. Going forward…the only question is the bench support and college development of the freshmen.

I think you answered your own question. The switch turned on. I see it at work with new hires. We throw a lot at them, follow up and support them and sometimes someone struggles to hit their efficiency rate. Then one day they get there. They always say they don’t know what happened. Something just clicked.

It’s very simple…Paint read all of our posts from this past summer that said our best lineup would be Smith, Loyer, Colvin, Heide and TKR. 😂 😂 😂

But in all seriousness, I think Myles was a bit timid and walking on eggshells a bit because he didn’t want to make a
Mistake that would lead to reduced mins. I think once he figured out that wasn’t happening this year, he has been able to play more relaxed.

With Heide, man I don’t know. I’m not sure if coaches got after him and told him to wake up or what, but it was VERY concerning the first few games we all watched. Not sure if he was hurt or didn’t want to make the wrong decision, but he seems more relaxed now too and playing his game.

Going to be a toughhh stretch from here on out and looking forward to seeing how these guys do. Hope they keep it up because they raise the ceiling for the team greatly.

They put in their time last year, he didn’t start them to start the season and now they’ve earned it. Colvin’s D so much better and they can both stroke the 3 in spurts. Exciting lineup to watch - really enjoying it!
