College Basketball Top 25

If Race and Kopp are featured on offense it’s not good. As role players? They’re both valuable
Then you can say that about any D 1 player one would think. I mean most got scholarships for something right? I just don't think they are anything special in my book. Race probably a bit more valuable just for his rebounding. Kopp....EH nothing special.

If Race and Kopp are featured on offense it’s not good. As role players? They’re both valuable
Bingo. Kopp just has to hit shots. If he doesn't, put in Bates. Hood-Schifino can play the 3 at the collegiate level and I wouldn't be worried about having Johnson, Bates and JHS on the floor together. Race just has to keep being confident shooting the ball or Reneau will start taking his minutes. Geronimo is an interesting one as well. If he becomes a 30-35% 3pt shooter, he can take some minutes from Kopp and/or Race. But will that happen? Who knows. IU has a 1000 questions just like everyone else in the Big Ten.

Here's my hot take. From what I've seen IU should be starting both of those freshmen.
I wouldn't mind it, but I actually like bringing Reneau off the bench behind TJD. Offensively, Reneau is a lot like TJD as freshman. Dominant left hand, strong, quick moves. So it allows there to be a lot less dropoff than last year with Durr.

From what little I’ve seen of the IU team, I would agree with this. Those are some good freshmen. I’ll bet IU finishes a position or two above where they finished last year.

I did release my Top 25 yesterday... No Purdue still isn't in it.

It wold be a service to fans if anyone providing rankings also provides justification for each team on the list and their position on the list. So many polls look like group-think, with a few pollster outliers.

Well this is my personal list. I put it out well before the AP so I have no chance on copying them. If you have questions. Just ask.

OK. My question is, what is your justification for your rankings? I understand that it's your "personal list". I'm interested in the analysis that goes into a ranking.

Well most of it is based on how you play, who you play, who loses, who wins, did a win outweigh a loss. I discussed it a little in my podcast this week. But this early in the season and it's a bit easier to make more drastic changes up and down.

Lol, this guy skipped the weeks Purdue was a no brainer #1, then fast forwards after a few close wins, and puts Purdue #2 when we've been #1 for the straight weeks

I see what you did there.. and it probably will work, we have some fish in this pool that'll grab onto any bait they see.

Happy hunting fella

Uhh... Nope. Never skipped. And had Purdue actually tied with UConn at #1 for a week. But UConn has stayed at #1 the last 3 weeks, Purdue at #2 the last 2 weeks.

I think it is a fair, but subjective ranking. I have seen UConn and they are good. Their center is a highly rated freshman, at 7'2" so that position is maybe a push, but most likely Purdue edge. Their guards are very good, and if Purdue's shooting woes continue, then I would give UConn's guards the edge. However, I don't think Purdue's shooters will be down for long. They are simply too good for that to be a season long trait.

Other than #18 Alabama, UConn has not been tested for real. That doesn't mean they aren't for real, but their schedule has been pretty "cupcaky" so far.

The Big East is a much weaker conference this year than the Big Ten. Therefore, I expect UConn to get a #1 ranking because Purdue will accumulate more losses due to the conference schedule. However, UConn my likely get into trouble during the NCAA because they will not be used to playing tougher teams on short notice as opposed to the Purdue experience.

Right... Because that's been working well for the Big Ten recently.

The problem with the Big Ten and the NCAA tournament has been one of style of play. The Big Ten referees allow a very physical game. When in the NCAA, you do not tend to have these refs. The new refs do not allow the same style. Big Ten teams tend to have issues adjusting. Big Ten teams also tend to have a greater "Big Man Focus" than do other conferences. For some reason, refs think that Big Ten centers can take more abuse (and concurrent fouling) and do not call obvious fouls on Big Ten centers.

Let's cite the CSU-Fullerton game in the NCAA: Haas was egregiously fouled, resulting in serious injury and essentially ending Purdue's chances of a deep run. While a foul was called on the play, it was not deemed a technical foul and the player committing it was not ejected, iirc. It was so bad that it resulted in a rule change. However, Haas was being treated similarly throughout the game and it was tolerated. Look at a similar game with St. Peter's last year in how Edey was treated.

What needs to happen for Big Ten teams to go far in the tournament is the league instructing refs to call a game like other conferences do. Refs should be followed closely and if they do not change their pattern then they should be gone, mid-season or not. That would clean up play and help improve tournament chances

There is some merit to this post. I was at the game where Haas was injured, and the opponent was rough as all hell on the Purdue center. His arms were covered with scratches, and his hands were red with slaps. I don't know why he was expected, by the refs, to play this sort of basketball. It was ugly and gave the advantage to the littler team (did the refs feel sorry for them?) .

The situation is so much worse in BIG games. All you have to do is watch an ACC or Big East game. The freedom of movement and the space given to the offense is completely different than most BIG games. Something is dreadfully wrong with the way the BIG is allowed to play basketball.

Hot take: I believe that Jalen Hood-Schifino is a substantial upgrade from every guard IU had on their roster last year, and that includes Xavier Johnson.

Hot take #2: The second best big on IU's roster this year is likely not Race Thompson; it is Malik Reneau.

And it's not because these two had outstanding stat lines in the two exhibitions; it is because while on the court with the more experienced players on IU's roster, other than Trayce they were completely superior to the other experienced players. Gotta play the games and stay healthy, but that is real cause for IU optimism that goes far beyond IU being experienced.

Semi-hot take: Trey Kaufman is the second best player on Purdue's roster, and whoever is third best is not especially close to him.
Lol
