Pretty impressive videos of Cline from the scrimmage. I would not be shocked to see him playing over Mathias and Stephens by the end of the season. No way he redshirts.

Agreed. Kid looks good. It's a great feeling to know that we have three really good 3-point shooters this year, and after that we still have Ray and Vince that should have green lights most, if not all of the time as well.

Going to be a fun year!

Maybe it will be Mathias that redshirts? At least it would allow him to heal better. If CLine and Edwards supply the 3-pt shooting, then maybe Mathias can take a year off.

Mathias redshirting would be a huge blow to Purdue. I really, really hope that doesn't happen.

Backcourt of Ray D, streaky Stephens, PJ, Hill, and Cline...

Outside of Davis, there is a lot of unknown surrounding Stephens, PJ, Hill and Cline.

Cline may be an outstanding shooter, but I would be surprised if his all-around game was close to what Mathias' is.

I think of Mathias as probably our most complete guard. He proved he can play D last year, and he can handle the ball well, pass very well, shoot from deep, and most of all make good decisions. If you asked me which guards I trust on the court, he's at the top along with Ray. Unless his problem is severe and/or at risk of worsening by playing, I don't see how we could redshirt him this year.

Completely agree with this. With Johnny Hill not available for Saturday's scrimmage, Dakota ran point most of the day, along with PJ on the other squad. He looked really solid running the point...good handles, good decision making, good passing, and hitting open looks. Plus, his free throw shooting was beautiful, and he got to the line a lot. I'm pretty sure he also had no turnovers. The thing to remember about Cline is that if he can't defend, he won't get a ton of minutes, regardless of how he shoots. I'd say he's definitely behind Dakota defensively at this point. I just really trust Dakota, along with Ray, at the guard positions. I wish Hill could've played...have no basis to compare him to Dakota at this time, but as I said, I was impressed with Dakota running the point.

Whoa guy. He wasn't terrible but he certainly wasn't any star on defense last year. Hell Bryson Scott had more steals and he played way less than half the minutes of Dakota.

If steals were the best barometer of defensive acumen, you'd be on to something. The previous poster made no mention of Mathias being a star on defense. He said he proved he could play it. And he did.

Never said he was a star - just said he proved himself on D last year. Painter would not have played him otherwise.

You guys are putting way too much on DM and a freshman. He was barely serviceable last year. 32 percent shooter. He's a safe player and a good passer but he has a ways to go. I like KS a lot better. More athletic, more dynamic, higher ceiling, better shooter. DM is a glue guy. Cline, who knows he has yet to play a game! These are not 5 star world beater kids. Let them mature in the system and hit their stride. I would be shocked and distraught if Cline is starting over Stephens. It means we are not developing talent. BFTU

I think that DM was better than "barely serviceable" down the stretch last season (after a very rough start to his freshman year). He didn't shoot well, but otherwise he exceeded my expectations for his freshman year. If he can stay healthy, I expect him to be clearly better as sophomore.

I agree that Cline is unproven and I also agree that Stephens has the potential to be very good.

I like them all. There are qualities KS has that DM does not & vice verse. I do hope KS improves when it comes to things like focus/awareness when passing, shot selection, and general decision making. There are some 30-footers at certain times that should not be shot :). There are passes you can't afford to make nonchalantly or telegraph. Sometimes you should fake shots and passes to gain advantage over defenders. I think DM does better at these kinds of decisions, at least as of the end of last year. If KS has improved in the areas he needs to, then I agree he probably plays in front of DM because he is a bit better natural shooter and has more length on D. It's a pretty close competition IMO.

I think most who post on this site generally will have a personal favorite when it comes to KS, DM, and RC. They can all shoot, and we have seen what the first two for the most part can bring to the table...while many are still curious what Cline will contribute in addition to his shooting ability. He's fun to talk about right now because he is one of the new guys and of course has impact potential right out of the gate.

The beautiful thing to me is that all 3 are talented and will more than likely be deserving of floor time, and that lends well for the present as well as the future. My biggest hope is one of the three finds a different gear to separate themselves from the pack...like Davis did his junior year...and AJ last season. If one of them finds another gear this could be a special season.

I'm not ready yet to call DM a 'great shooter'. He missed a ton of wide open 3's last year and if I remember correctly, he had some looks in the UC tourney game that would have put them away.
You can't just be a great practice shooter, you gotta do it in the games. Otherwise, I'd be on the PGA tour based on my driving range skills.

I agree that there is a difference, but lots of shooters seem to struggle as freshmen. Recent examples at Purdue include Smith and Byrd. Shooting improvement is more than likely if Dakota is healthy, IMO.

Soooooooooo, are we still as concerned about the "Purdue backcourt weakness" as we were earlier this year?

From what I've seen, Cline looks like a great passer. This team appears to have a number of very good passers.
I think people look past passing and I know it doesn't rate star power. good teams pass the ball well and passing the ball well takes good effort because there is more to it than throwing in in the direction and general timing. Purdue has some passers...I agree with you.

While I have never seen Cline play in person, from watching what videos I have seen of him, he has an interesting defensive ability that not everyone has.

When defending a quicker player, Cline moves his feet well, and seems to intuitively know the correct backward angle with which to slide over to stop penetration. And he does so without ending up on his heels, so that if his opponent tries a stop & pop, Cline can go up and get a hand in the player's face. That may not be a high-profile skill, but it is an important one to have, especially if you have to play a lot of quicker players.

Offhand, I think Cline will be a lot better on defense than many would expect.
