CJ Hayes

Ya, Hayes was all in from day one and has been interviewed several times since his commitment talking about how CJB to Purdue was his dream come true. Then he takes a trip to MSU, which had a very down year, and instant change. I don't blame him for leaving though. He was the lowest rated WR commit out of 5 and CJB is still looking to add more. He would have been a good player, but I don't know that he was better than any of the other recruits. Hope he finds a good fit and has good luck. Maybe we will turn that spot into a linebacker or another defensive lineman. Preferably one that has big upside. The stars don't bother me, but the lower star players tend to take longer to develope and we need help asap.

We received a commitment from 2* WR Catlett from Kentucky today. You can probably tell I'm a little concerned about our last 4 commitments and the direction our class is taking this last week. Catlett would not have been my first choice.

Are you someone who knows college football recruiting so well that we should be concerned that you are concerned? Or do you know nothing about college football like most everyone else on these boards?

You mean you're worried about the 1st team all state WR Keyron Catlett? This is what the Kentucky papers had to say about him.

"Had 53 receptions for 856 yards and nine touchdowns and also rushed for 233 yards and five touchdowns on 40 carries. Named the Class 5-A, District One Player of the Year by the Kentucky Football Coaches Association. The Colonels’ top receiver since his freshman season, Catlett finished his career with 213 receptions for 3,614 yards and 36 TDs. Was a second-team All-State selection as a junior."

With those kinds of stats and awards, I am very concerned about him as well because he was ranked 2 stars by Rivals. (TIC)

Agreed here. Keyron is a philosophy fit for Brohm's offense. He will be a slot WR that is able to work inside and on the flats. I think he is a Danny Anthrop type player who may not have the top end elite speed that Anthrop had BUT what he does have is Nike Combine verified shuttle of 4.28 and a verticle 35.2. He will be a WR that fits the offensive philosophy for Brohm and at this point, those are the types of players Purdue needs to be successful sooner rather than later. Find guys that Brohm can build his offensive strategy around and watch him build a strategy to put points on the board.

I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend.

I think it will definitely be a loss. I think he will be a good player for them. However, we are in a rebuilding process, so we need players to be 100% Purdue. He obviously wasn't.

I might be the biggest Purdue fan in the state of Ohio, and I get royally sideways when we lose basketball games in the ridiculous way that we have found to lose in the past couple of years. With football I have all but resigned to the fact that we're just not very good. However CJB gives me all kinds of hope, and one thing that is absolutely correct is that we have to be recruiting "Purdue players". I don't care what their star ranking is as long as this coaching staff believes they are the right fit. The recruiting process please so skewed towards the major schools. I personally watch this unfold two years ago with a friend of mine whose son was a highly sought after recruit by every major school for the secondary. I washed his star ranking go from as low as two stars to as high as four stars and back down again to two stars. I washed him say no to Ohio State, Michigan of course Purdue and many others throughout the country including USC. Had he committed to Ohio State or USC he probably would've finished at a four star rating. Since he committed to Kentucky finished as a two star athlete bottom line is he's very good and will start as a redshirt freshman and who knows where these recruits will finish their career, all I know is this coaching staff knows what they need in order to succeed and I'm going to give them the chance to prove it! Boiler up!

Football evaluations are much tougher than basketball. Fewer games and no AAU. Much more room for error in the football "star" ratings. Tiller won a ton of games with a lot of 2 and 3 star recruits.

The 7 on 7 tournaments are making it much easier to evaluate the skill talent. Kids get more exposure today than they ever did during the tiller years

The last area where you can claim a lack of exposure is line play.

Drew Brees & Aaron Rodgers were not highly ranked coming out of HS. Both unranked I believe, so it's safe to say that all these ranking services are not an exact science...

that was the old days. Today's athletes receive a lot more attention and exposure. Think about it, Brohm has added 14 players to this roster in one month. he had to know about their talents I believe the days of the hidden nuggets are long gone. .

There's also hundreds more 3-star/unranked players than 4/5 stars

I believe my point was that was the old days and today's current athlete receives a lot more exposure, and hence the national rankings are a lot more accurate. Using Brady and Rothesburger and older players to prove your point only makes mine more valid. % wise, our current rankings are pretty accurate at predicting a recruit's success.

Drew Brees- 6 stars
