Purdue is 20-11, 12-6 in conference and regardless will be a top 5 seed in the BTT. Two horrible losses and 1 really bad one in December. I get that. Look at the roster though. Painter has admitted to recruiting non Purdue guys in the past and we all know who those guys were. However, the roster now looks to be filled with real Purdue guys. This is a team that has gelled into a family. These guys will do a lot for each other. Outside of Octeus there are no seniors on the roster.
1.) Point to the bad losses in December, I get that, I really do. But can anyone on this board really look at all the stats, look at the B1G record, look at sweeping IU, and look at finishing top 5 in conference and truly believe Painter is not a B1G caliber coach?
2.) I know a lot of folks want final fours and I'm with you on that, but Painter has had teams capable of that run... Barring injury. Is that an agreeable point?
3.) Recruiting was verrrry lean post Baby Boilers. Really though look at a couple guys and it just didn't pan out. Overall there were bad years and Painter admits that. Look at the previous two classes though. I see recruiting moving on the up and up. I know Painter hasn't landed a 5 star but whys that so huge? No 5 stars in the baby Boiler class and one of the higher rated players in that class left after year one... Yet they still had a championship look to them at one point. I guess the question is, is it really necessary to ink 5 star burger boys to get to and win a championship? I'd argue all day, no.
4.) X and O's. So he's a terrible X's and O's coach? Really my question at this point is, if hes so bad at all these things how is his winning % so high and why has he won B1G COY honors multiple times?
These are the main grips I constantly hear from the anti Painter group. I just want to have a back and fourth in a civilized manor in order to clarify the true reasons you don't believe he needs to be at Purdue.
Is he a perfect coach, not by any means. Can he be as good as a Coach K, probably not, but who is? Can he be as "good" as a Jim Boehiem? Well I hope not... Who does Purdue get to replace him anyway?
Also please don't get on the thread to cry because its another Painter debate thread. I'm hoping this goes a much different way than any of the others have ever gone so take your whining somewhere else... Please...
