... and, of course, we never offered. What would we want with a three-star lineman for an undefeated state champion who played just across town?

He wanted the offer from ND that was what he worked hard for.Purdue is a stretch for a 3 star at any position with the clown show coaching this football team.

In related news, we already have a commitment from a player at the same position, rated 14 spots higher.

This is a problem. If you have in state talent you have to at least take a look but to have talent 5 minutes away and not offering is insane. Who cares if you offered a kid 14 spots higher. Can't have enough quality offensive lineman just ask Andrew Luck!

Didn't Cronk work out at a camp for Hazell and Coach Bridge? They seem to think that Powell and Campbell are better prospects than Cronk. Considering some of the misses these guys have had in the past, it wouldn't surprise me if they were flat out wrong either.

I would agree with this if they werent recruiting other tackles. They will take a second tackle in this class.

From someone very in the know with this situation that is a close friend:

Cronk was visited by former OC John Shoop and Shoop wanted Cronk badly because of his athleticism and what appears to be a solid ceiling to work toward. Hazell didn't want to extend a scholarship. The same can be said for one of CC's defensive players and former DC Hudson. I can't remember the players name off the top of my head but Hudson wanted to extend a scholarship and Hazell flat out said no.

Cause you know, the last player CC got who everyone thought wasn't built for the B1G turned out to be a damn good player...also Anthrop should have shirted this year and came back next year. It was painfully obvious that first game he didn't have it this year and he would have been a nice compliment to the RB's for next year.

Is this the way to build relationships with state/local coaches?

We still may offer Anthrop. I think there is a stigma with a 1A player plus it was supposed to be a small class; isn't it like 14 or something? I believe if it was a big class, 20-25 he would have been offered. I agree it stinks to lose him to IU.

Can he play DB?

He played CB in high school but not sure he has the hip turn that coaches look for at the P5 level. May turn out to be a safety or a slot WR like his brother.

I am not sure; when Purdue was on BYE week Hazell picked his game to go to when they played some small school and won by 50. Usually when the head man goes to a game he is a top target. If Darrell Hazell is going to go anywhere in the world to watch a game and he goes to CC, I have to believe someone is a target. If they don't offer Anthrop that seems kind of like a wasted visit.

Two coaches son's play on that team so it could have very well been Hazell supporting two of his coaches (one being the DC). Although it sounds odd to waste a chance to go see a couple guys play down in Indy, Ft. Wayne, or the Region...it wouldn't surprise me.

The lack of prospects from the region recently is worrysome. Tiller had good success up there and even Hope got a couple. I think Robinson is Hazell's only commit from up there.

I really would hope that Hazell (and if another coach gets here soon) starts to place a high level premium on recruiting Indy, Ft. Wayne, and the region. Unfortunately, they aren't going to suddenly turn the kids in high school in to Boilermakers (unless a well known coach comes in or if Purdue makes a massive jump next season to at least 8 wins). It is going to have to be from the ground up and I'm talking getting kids at the junior high level interested in coming to Purdue through satellite camps and a big time promotions budget to get the program some Facetime up there (send the players to schools to read to students!).

That area must not fall inside "The State of Purdue".

The idea of The State of Purdue proved he didnt know the situation when he came here. I know he ripped the concept from Tressel, but i genuinely think he thought he could get traction in the midwest.

Purdue will always have to recruit Texas and the Southeast. That wont every change. Doesnt mean he should do better in Indiana/Illinois/Ohio than he has.

Not any dumber than not offering a TE who is the son and nephew of former Boilers who both played in the NFL.

Region has been definitely down lately. Peaks and valleys. Yancey, Robinson, Dalapo McCarthy all come to mind. The kicker is when kids from the state go to other mid-level teams like the kid from Penn going to Virginia, Cronk to IU, etc. Hazell or Purdue needs to nail down Fort Wayne for sure.

AND get back into the Chicago area. I was looking at a rundown of the all Chicago players in the Trib last weekend and it listed where they were going to school. I noted not one mention of Purdue among them with most of the rest of the BIG as well as other top tier schools and some MAC schools mentioned. I think DH is just suffering rectal cranial inversion in recruiting.

I remember 15 years or so ago thinking that Clayton kid from Central Catholic was pretty damn good and athletic for his size when they won a state title, but I don't recall Tiller showing any interest in him even though he was in his backyard.

Are talking about Clayton Richard that went to Michigan?

Tiller recruited him pretty hard from what i remember.

No..Mitch Clayton at CC. When they won their first title and I think were undefeated in the late 90's. He was big, fast and athletic but I don't think ever went anywhere.

At the time Clayton was being recruited, Tiller and then Greg Olsen (QB coach) was very good friends with my father and frequently had breakfast with him. Greg stated had they been able to take Clayton, they would have taken him in a heartbeat because they felt he would have thrived in their offense (big arm, extremely smart, better athlete than he was given credit for) however Olsen stated he would have a ton of work to do on his footwork. Clayton could have been a big time hit here as a QB but instead was relegated to the bench...however I would say his 'backup career' as a pitcher has worked out pretty well!!!

Mitch Clayton would have been offered by Purdue but he simply was not interested in playing football or going to college. That was why Purdue did not offer. He was as good as any back in the state his senior year regardless of class.

If we really think this one 3 star guy will make a difference please!! 1a PLAYER WHO LOOKS UNDERSIZED IT WILL TAKE HIM 3YEARS TO MATURE. hAZELL DOESNT HAVE THE LUXURY TO WAIT THAT IS WHY THE JC ROUTE IS WHERE THEY ARE GOING. THAT ROUTE IS LIKE A TWO EDGED SWORD... THEY BETTER BE DAMM GOOD OR ELSE. MY ISSUE IS WEITH JC'S NO REAL ALLEGIENCE TO PURDUE, SOME OF THESE GUYS DONT EVEN KNOW WHAT STATE WE ARE IN. BE CAREFUL COAACH

Gotcha. That makes sense then. I was pretty sure I wasn't misremembering how good he was.
