has to be really excited about his prospects for playing time next year if he watched Purdue's guards this year. Especially in pressure situations.

Since we're already looking to next season include me as a Carsen Edwards fan. His potential seems extraordinary. BUT, lets temper those expectations please. The kid comes in a freshman. I hope he compliments an experienced, veteran team. He doesn't need to be a savior.

He's my starting PG, until someone can prove they are better. Yes, he will make mistakes. In the non-conference, we can still win with mistakes while he learns

Does everyone understand that his specific weakness is that he is not a penetrator - he's a shooter? I'm not saying your expectations are wrong, but I sure remember a LOT of people on here begging for a point guard that breaks down the defense and drives the middle.

Really? I have heard he is go at going to the basket due to his strength. He almost played football instead of bball. Supposed to be tough as nails and is strong to the basket despite the fact he does not have yogi speed and only 6-0. A Kramer clone except he can shoot.

He "may" be able to get to the bucket in college and he can definitely shoot the ball, but his defense must improve a lot and not sure what ability he has in the half court to create for others.

If he can only shoot, that will at least be better than what we have now. I'm tire of seeing teams play 5 on 4 against us because we have a pg on the court that can't score. I'm ok with Basil and Edwards ability to get to the basket. KS also showed that ability this year.... If he stays.

he will be able to get his shot off, but unlike high school he cannot just let it fly. he was a star in high school and hopefully a good player in college

I agree. As well as running an offense that does not always have two of our guys plus their defenders in the paint. The motion offense allows anyone to be the penetrator ...

Dang sure hope he is flat good enough to be the unquestioned starter @ PG Day 1---that will get me excited.

If Carsen is reading this, enjoy it. You will never me more popular here than before you play your first game.

I hope Carsen is that good but until I see it I'm going to say that PJ is our starting point guard next year. He improved greatly between his freshman and sophomore seasons and I expect more strides will be made this offseason. He will be solid for us.

I find it interesting that the ACC (a conf. the big ten beat in the challenge) has so many teams in the sweet 16. Why ? They have good point guards. The old saying about needing a point guard in the NCAA is true !

The days of plodding defenses are over - if they see that you are weak at that position, they are going to pressure you. Period !

So the question is: Do we have a chance to get beyond the first game of the NCAA ?

My take is that we will need a PG and we better start that process as early as we can because it will take time for ANYONE to have enough skills by March. We better be trying to train 3, hoping to get one. (ie People do get in foul trouble)

PS Knowing that pressure is still one of our biggest problems areas, I would also suggest we practice it daily with our wind sprint training. Take a look at next year's line-up and you know teams will run us.

I'm guessing you've never seen him play.

Kudos to this....at the HS level he does it all, ran the point at times, deadly 3 point shooter, drives to the hoop to finish or throw an assist pass and plays belly up tough man-to-man D! If all his game transfer to college from HS we have a diamond! And yes I have seen him play many times against top D1 talent in Texas! Wish we could get the 6' 10" post from DeSoto who they lost to in the 6A Championship game...he is a stud!

There is zero doubt PJ is starting. People make me laugh.

You are prob. right, knowing PJT is a real solid, experienced and is a low TO, decent assist, low risk guard.....but IF Carsen can come in & beat him out..............that would be exciting for Purdue. Means CE is really special and a difference maker. I know Boilers as a group are realistic, pessimistic and negative nellies, but as for me I am hopeful....I hope CE is flat good enough to start as that means Painter really thinks he is that needed difference maker.

I never ever said he can't get to the rim. I said he is a shooter more than a penetrator. That video shows him coming baseline with no one in his way and dunking before the help side gets there. Maybe he broke down his high school defender, but we can't know that from the video. But that is a basketball move that any player playing D1 should be able to make, perhaps without the dunk, but an undefended baseline drive does not show that he is a penetrator down the lane against a great college defender at the end of a game.

My point remains that he is a shooter over a penetrator. Maybe he can be both as Yogi has become over the years. He is not regarded as a penetrating guard. He is known as a shooting guard. And that is GREAT for us. I'm not complaining at all. But since expectations are everything on this board ...

Kentucky and Duke fighting over him.

Kentucky would like a word with you.

I'm sorry. I must have misunderstood when you said, "Does everyone understand that his specific weakness is that he is not a penetrator." Somehow I mistook "he is not a penetrator" as "he can't get to the rim." My bad.

If Johnny Hill would have done that at the end of the MSU & LR games, we'd have a BTT championship and probably still be playing.

I've seen Carsen ranked between a 3 star #129 and a 4 star #89. He ought to be good, but he might not be an immediate lock to be a starter. Isn't he the only player signed for next year? I guess Painter is looking for some graduate transfers? Needs some shooters or athletic slashers.

Penetrating is when the ballhandler breaks down his defender, gets by him and makes something good happen when help defense slides over. Getting to the rim is when a ballhandler drive down a wide-open lane and gets his hand/ball to the rim ... as in the video. No defense and no challenges involved.

Other than that. scouting reports discuss a player's primary tendencies and their major strength. If something isn't a major strength, it is probably a weakness. All coaches want to know what style a player plays primarily. If you're looking for a slasher and a guy is primarily a shooter, then he may not be a great fit. It does NOT mean he can't slash, it means his first strength and usually his first choice is to shoot. He may be a great slasher, but his mind doesn't make that choice first. Yo9u may have heard the term "pass-first point guard" as opposed to a "shoot first point guard." Those terms are used often. They sure as hell don't mean that the player either can't shoot or can't pass .... duh.

This is all pretty basic to scouting and evaluating a prospect. I'm sure there are classes available in your area if you are really interested in improving your skills.

Do they offer classes for back-tracking what you've said, as well? Keep trying. I'll leave you alone, now.

What was Buddy ranked???

I agree. As a starter, PJ is solid, but starting isn't what I am concerned about.

What I want to know is whether Edwards can finish. Specifically, is he a player that can be put in a game to advance the ball when Purdue is protecting a lead and opposing teams start to press and trap. Also, is he a player who can make a play during crunch time when everything else breaks down. I don't know the answer to those questions.

He is a nice looking player. The only thing will be his height. It will be interesting to see how he does versus a 6'2"-6'4" opposing guard with athleticism equal to him. Having said that, he is a good looking player. Congrats.

Agree. It will be interesting to see how his game translates. The thing I'm impressed with is how high he finishes around the rim. His elevation is fantastic. Edwards is the only current player we have that finishes at or above the rim (on the drive).

I'll edit to add Basil.

From these highlights, nothing tells me he can't challenge PJ if he put in the work and has a high motor. I can't wait to see him on the floor with VE. Specifically move at 1:12 in the video

The first thing a penetrtor needs to do is put pressure on the defense to not sag off him so he can get the defender off balance creating a way to drive the ball. I think he's got that down pretty good.
