Carsen Edwards now 4 star and #91 ranked recruit

Just looking thru the rankings, it seems Michigan State will be a force to be reckoned with in the next few years as usual. I sure hope we can land Kostas. Surprised he isn't already snatched up by someone. Video looks like he could be something special.

Looking at the rest of the BIG in concerns to this class, state looks absolutely stacked, Maryland has a really solid class along with Michigan and IU adding solid pieces. Also Penn St. getting some good looking local talent. Adding two solid players from this class would certainly be preferable and help us keep up with the other main competition in the BIG.

Yes that would be great to land him also, and does anyone know why #89 hasn't committed anywhere yet?

You can never know what truly happened but I did some digging. Apparently he had made some nice connections with St John and Iowa State, but then they both have had coaching changes. In the midst of changes, other SF recruits, who were rated higher than him at the time, committed to those schools. So all of sudden, he grew 3, 4 inches and became a better prospect without any reliable school contacts. No personal or academic problem, if any, has surfaced so far.

IMO, CEdwards, Spike and PJ will take care of the PG for the Boilers. Basil replaces Davis without much loss. IF Caleb stays, PU is a top 15 team. The IU- Purdue rivalry can start to become a national rivalry game again. Can't wait.

Good points .Now will any of us live to see The Old Oaken Bucket game become important on a national level?

The actuarial tables tell me I have less than 40 years to live. That means I won't live to see it.

Go Purdue!

I don't know when those rankings are initially set (right before HS/Prep season and now new evaluation after?) but I suppose it's a good sign in the case of these two.

"Basil replaces Davis without much loss."

jimmygoiu? troll? Aaron, is that you?

RD played the 2 this past season and was more natural in a 3 type role in the Painter system. Smotherman is a 3/4 combo and more of a 3 as well. He's not a 2 (unless his handles are unquantifiably better after this offseason of work). V. Edwards is more prepared to play the 2 than the last time we saw Smotherman in official games.

I would like to see Vince @ the 2 in some situations at times......he could really make a difference out there....and have Basil down in the 3. Watching VE it seemed like his 3pt shooting % was better when he took shots from out front in the 2 area.

With Albrecht and CEdwards shoring up the pg, my thoughts were that Cline and Mathias play the two. Both are much more offensive threats for Purdue than Davis was. Edwards at the 3 and CSwanigan at the 4 with Basil backing them up. Haas, if he can handle 26-29 minutes per game, will be a beast in the middle. I was not trolling, just trying to comment and get some feedback. I am not Aaron.

Okay, I apologize.

By Cline's numbers overall as a frosh, he wasn't real good (other than 3PT%) but yes, he seems like a good and quick decision-maker that's confident and can knock down shots in bunches. Mathias was definitely more of an overall offensive threat than Davis in the latter half of the season (minus the MSU game in Mackey).

Just a thought on Cline. While I love his 3 pt stroke, when I watched him in warm-ups before games this year, his mid range shot looked consistently off balance and awkward. Idk if he was taking the shots seriously or not but it did not look like a consistent stroke for whatever reason. I hope Cline gets/has a good mid-range b/c I believe he and Mathias would be a force at the 2 position if they both have a mid-range game going to compliment their three point attack.

I feel Mathias already has a good mid-range game. I hope next season he uses it more like in the Maryland game. Without him giving us 17 that night, I believe there was no way we win. He was amazing that night.

I hope with Davis gone, Cline and Mathias see all the time at the 2. Despite losing a great defender in Davis and Hammons, I don't think we will turn into the Phoenix Suns from the late 2000s on defense. I think PJ, Vince, and Smotherman can all be excellent defenders. Haas might not be the shot-blocker AJ was but I think he has the adequate foot speed to at least help out effectively on the dribble drive.

I think the really interesting thing will be at the 4 position. Depending on what happens over the next 2 months, it could be a huge strength or a question mark. If Biggie stays and we get Greek Freak Jr., then there will be 5 guys we could play there (Vince, Basil, Kostas, Biggie, and Taylor). However, I would assume the plan would then be to have Taylor back up Haas, Kostas back up Biggie, and then Vince and Basil rotate at the 3.
If we get neither, I would suppose Painter would go back to more small ball and play Vince/Basil at the 4.

In summary, I hope the offense flows a hell of a lot better next season. Dead-End Davis will be gone and Mathias/Cline will have even more experience. If Biggie comes back, I would assume the turnover problem would be better as well. Sorry "A thought on Cline" turned into a season prediction. And this thread is about Carson lol!

Interesting comment on RC's mid range shot. I was surprised to see he wasn't a better FT shooter this year as well, so maybe there's something to your observation.

What sport is that for and have we played it in the past 10 years?

After taking several "hard" looks at the film, it was concluded that it hasn't been played in at least the last five....Purdue wanted a little more time to assess the situation, but.....unfortunately......out of time-outs.

Perhaps put more eggs in the basket?

I'm excited to see what Carsen Edwards can do after a full offseason of working on his game. I do wonder whether he can transition well to being a 1 most of the time. He'll probably be capable of playing both the 1 and 2 (although he might end up being sort of undersized at the 2: hope he can grow another 2-3 inches taller).

It would have been nice to get Jarron Cumberland or Bruce Brown to solidify a multi-dimensional threat at the 2, but maybe the staff can make it work somehow with CE, Dakota Mathias, and Ryan Cline (or Vincent Edwards). Even with the additions of CE and Albrecht, the backcourt still gives me a shaky feeling overall but I guess we'll have to hope that the returnees develop even more and solidify it. I wouldn't mind there being one more backcourt and frontcourt addition this offseason. Antetokuonmpo and Anthony Livingston (Arkansas State grad transfer) are the best immediately eligible frontcourt guys that I see Purdue having a chance with right now and Troyce Manassa (Savannah State grad transfer) is the best backcourt player under that criteria that I see being a possibility.

I don't think that the very top-rated, still available HS guys like Jarrett Allen are even considering the Boilers, correct?
I'm not sure we want to add a 4th point guard at this point. Lets see what CE can do... with SA & PJ in the fold, I think we are in pretty good shape. DM & VE both have shown the ability to play the point as well if needed. Hopefully it won't be needed.

It wouldn't have to necessarily be a PG. Another good shooting and overall scorer (i.e. can get his own shot) at the 2-guard could be beneficial as well. The grad transfer guard I mentioned (6'4 215 Troyce Manassa) did a pretty good job of that overall (3PT shooting could have been better, but he got to the FT line a lot) this past season:

I think that kind of play and being able to get to the line still translates when going to a superior program, even though there might be a drop in PT and overall production.
