While I fully understand relationships often trump everything else in recruiting.....even taking off my Purdue glasses....CAL seems like a bit of a risky choice.
If you've got a player that is believed to be a surefire NBA prospect after a year or two of college:
1) Why go 3000 miles from home, and change a lot of the dynamics that have served Swanigan well up to this point?
2) Why pick the school with the most rebuilding/moving parts? All you need to do is hit a single (or two).....not a home run/ rebuild a bottom feeder Pac 10 program.
3) Going to a program with one or two other one and done's......what happens if they move on after a year....and you need another year of college?
4) At Purdue or MSU......Barnes can go into the office....cut out an hour or two early....and be in the stands to watch Swanigan on a weekday night. Unless he's got access to a private jet.....a commercial flight out to watch Caleb at CAL...is a two day commitment. Now if Barnes needs to be on the west coast regularly for business......then perhaps this isn't as big of a deal.
5) Izzo, Zo. Painter etc all will all provide good coaching/development for Swanigan
Again perhaps the close relationship with Zo trumps everything.........just seems like MSU, Purdue or another school closer....would seem to make more logical sense.
If the decision hasn't been made yet.....I think if Barnes/Swanigan sit down and list out the pros and cons of each school......that both MSU and Purdue might become more logical choices.
Obviously logic and recruiting don't always go together.
