Brohm gets contract extension

Increases are 100k per year not 1 million. GBI added an extra 0 in their tweet.

The deal includes an increase in assistant salaries from 3.5m to 3.9m. I would have guessed we wait another season before the extension but I am glad we are committing more to our assistants now. A good HC is necessary but one good coach can only do so much, we need all 14 (or however many) coaches to be good!

Brohm's buyout, if he should be hired elsewhere, is $4.4 million until Dec. 5, 2018, decreasing by $1.1 million every year to date until $1 million on Dec. 31, 2024.

Brohm's buyout started at $5 million and decreased by a million in December.

I'm confused why the new buyout is $600k lower than the original contract.

Also, I'm not understanding the math on how decreasing a $4.4M buyout by $1.1M every year ends up at $1M in 6 years.
before Dec. 5, 2018 = $4.4M buyout
12/6/18-12/5/19 = $3.3M buyout
12/6/19-12/5/20 = $2.2M buyout
12/6/20-12/5/21 = $1.1M buyout
post 12/6/21 --> $0???

It stays at 1M through the remaining years

Agree with all on this subject. Well deserved along with Coach Holt + seeing increases in the remaining coaches is a step in the right direction.

Did he get an extension so the buyout would be more shying other teams away more?

Too quick for that. Body of work is still seeking confirmation.
Waiting allows other schools firing staffs at seasons end to sniff around at the end of 2018. This helps show the commitment and close the door a bit easier. Coach Brohm and staff are winners. That makes name recognition of Purdue more relevant in sports and social media. Cannot deny that it brought in more revenue and kept the fans entertained. I came back to Purdue to attend PU/IU game and I haven’t set foot on campus during the Haze days at all. Will attend more in the future as well.

Other teams have been using the "Brohm is leaving next year" strat to lure players. Locking him in logterm was a must. Even if this year takes a step back, it was the right decision. You have to help CJB in recruiting and saying he just signed a big extension does wonders for that.

IU fans have been very vocal saying Brohm is going to leave right away. This extension probably ruined a lot of their days. They know what Purdue has in their current staff and it shows by how we are currently competing with in state guys. The days of the Haze are gone. It is great to see four star guys visiting, and I can't wait to see who attends Purdue's camps. Last year's class was the best Purdue has had in a while and I expect this year's class to be much better. Top 35 would be the bar in my opinion.

Can't see why others would say he is leaving after signing an original six year contract?

It has been edited and makes more sense now:

Brohm's buyout, if he should be hired elsewhere, is $4.4 million until Dec. 5, 2018 — a $400,000 increase from the previous contract — decreasing by $1.1 million every year to date until hitting $1.1 million in 2021.

That's Purdue.

I've been saying for a couple years that Purdue is a great job.

1) Low expectations of fanbase - win 8 games every year and you're a legend.
2) In the relatively weak B10 West - competing with Wisconsin every year is not exactly like Bama/Auburn/LSU or UM/PSU/OSU.
3) Attractive selling points in excellent school and great conference.
4) I would think that Brohm, being a former QB, would like coaching at a school with a historically strong QB tradition.

Other than the really big boys (top 6 or so jobs in the country) and Louisville, I don't think we have to worry about him going anywhere.

I recall clearly Hoosier fans assuring us that he would be gone to Louisville in 1-3 years in posts made last fall. Seems much less likely that is true at this point.

Maybe leaving for a higher profile job? To make $24 million where you could probably go 7-5 every year and run for mayor is a good deal.
Barry Alvarez became the Mayor then the King in Madison this exact same way. He wouldn't do this but likely could have run for Governor a decade ago and would have won in a landslide.

For IU FB to be successful, it has to get rid of any in-state competition. Otherwise, IU heads back to the sh!thole of the B10 standings.

He was incredibly successful in his first year. On top of that, rumors came out right after the season about him going to Tennessee. Brohm didn't do anything to quiet the rumors either. Just called them rumors and said he wouldn't address them. Even Moore seemed to hold off until it was certain Brohm would be back. Brohm over achieved, and drew national attention and Purdue has been cheap in recent memory. Even a big portion of Purdue's fan base is worried he would leave and wanted the extension with a high buyout. Signing the deal showed that he plans to stay and the increased money shows Purdue isn't going to go cheap this time. They have the right coach in place for the turnaround.
