the Irish faithful cannot stand for yet another March loss for Brey.

Granted zone can be difficult to coach, but did you see the Duke/UNC game a couple days ago? Zone is what won Duke the game. It totally changed the game.

Difference between Purdue and ND is that there are no ND basketball fans. They are either IU BB fans or ND football fans. ND basketball and IU football are irrelevant to most. If they rise up and do well when the IU BB or ND FB are down, then they get some notice, but that's it. Honestly, I know a lot of fans of both schools and none of them care about ND BB or IU FB.

Many still have the attire for it either way.

Zone is actually quite simple to beat. Unless your name is Tom Crean.
This is not true at all. If a zone is played properly it can be very difficult to beat. Purdue struggled against the zone for a few years until we got some shooters.

My daughter was only able to attend a few basketball games and she would echo your comments. However,I think that is the "general" day in and day out thougths. I'm sure when they snapped the 84? win streak of UCLA there were a lot of fans and a few other years. All that said...she never missed a home football game.

Ergo.... You shoot over the zone. That is the simple way to beat it. You may also note that Syracuse, famous for their zone, is NIT bound this year.

I happen to live here in South Bend..........Fans here really care about ND basketball........not quite to the degree of football of course. I have met coach Brey on several occasions ....great guy, unlike Digger.

From all I have seen or heard from Brey....that's the impression I got. Thanks for the observation.

Glad we are not subjected to Mr. "No Roads" and his silly highlighters anymore.

I sat in the coach's section at the 2007 Final Four in Atlanta. I was right next to Mike Brey. He couldn't have been nicer. He talked about the lack of financial support for basketball & he was a little perturbed about how the football program got whatever they wanted from the administration. For the record, he wasn't a huge fan of Charlie Weiss either.

They did play zone - just not a lot.

I'm not entirely sure where you are coming to that conclusion. Over the last three years, Notre Dame has played at an elite level, in the best basketball conference.

They have made two of the last three ACC Championship games - winning in '15. Along with back-to-back Elite Eight appearances. A miss shot away from the Final Four against that incredibly talented Kentucky team. They are expected to make another deep run this year.

I think it's fair to argue Notre Dame is Purdue's best win of the year thanks to the epic second half meltdown.

Brey isn't anywhere near the hot seat and is one of the brightest offensive minds in college basketball. Notre Dame fans also care about basketball - a lot. Quite a bit of history with the program despite being a football school.

He won't get fired. Brey is Digger deja vu. Every year, he wins just enough not to get fired.

What does that make Painter?

Brey has a higher winning percentage playing in top basketball conferences like the Big East and ACC. He also has had more post-season success.

One would be a nice start.

Absolutely agree with that. While I think it's logical to question "if" Painter will ever get that far, Brey is just another example of why I don't think it's entirely fair to say Painter "can't" or "won't" ever make a run.

In his first 9 NCAAT appearances with ND, Brey made 1 S16, had a 6-9 record, and suffered 4 straight upset losses in the 1st or 2nd round. He's followed that up with 2 straight E8's. Brey's tourney reputation is a lot different now than it was at the end of the '13 season. Hopefully we see Painter's narrative start to turn this year as well.

I can't imagine picking IU basketball over ND...thought that ship had sailed a decade ago....errrr well at least 9 years ago...

I'm pretty sure there was absolutely no thought put into this post by the op. Have to believe that slide & tc are actually the same person. No one else seems to be willing to set him up for the always hilarious settlers punchline. Maybe both are direct tv employees?

Never met either one, but I hear from those who have that Brey is a personable, down to earth guy. Digger on the other hand...not so much.

But he lost in March. Unacceptable.

Yeah the directv line is really fresh.

The "Fire (insert name of coach who just lost a game)" posts are equally witty.

Serious question and just out of curiosity because it really doesn't matter one iota, but do you think tc and slide are one in the same?

Between TC, Slidde, KesselSchmeckel, and Boiled Steel, I am pretty sure there's either a double identity or a friend or relative of CMP.

Difference is TC seems to watch the games, whereas the others can only offer cyber-beatdowns of other posters.

Final four last year
Good for 'cuse. My point still stands in that zone does not often buy you much. Syracuse is the only team to regularly play it, and have any success. Most teams use it as a crutch to cover a weakness, and when they run into a team that will exploit it, the zone becomes a burden. Most of the teams in the BIG would tear it apart. Only Crean could get confused by it.

Mathboy, you seem like a good guy but : 16 final four, 13 final four, 12 elite eight,04, 09 &10 sweet sixteen, 03 national championship. Doing what, playing a zone!! I'd give your left nut for that history

Thanks PUB. Actually, me too (left nut)! Syracuse makes it work by recruiting the right talent and by running it all the time. I might argue that their offense does contribute to the success, as well. It goes well beyond the zone.

I just don't think Purdue would run zone well with our personnel. Few other teams use it at the D1 level with any long term success. I will wait to be corrected here - I just don't recall any.
