Brandon Newman

I agree we need Newman's scoring, but if you view him with an isolated camera he takes a lot of plays off. When one of our threes went up, he was on the opposite side of the rim and didn't even try to rebound.

Morton is good at defending the best player but his offense is becoming Nojelesque as well.

True. But made me laugh. Yep, His shooting is becoming shocking when one goes in. All mental though, imo as he has a great stroke....unlike NE.

Too easy to double Edey when neither Furst nor Morton can shoot. Gillis needs to start and Newman needs more minutes. Newman defends as well as Morton.

Furst can't shoot??? News to me. Like him starting with Morton. BTW his 31% is not representative of what he can do, but is virtually tied for 4th on the team with BN who is just barely higher. He shot better % last year.

Gillis is great off bench in limited minutes. Both Furst and TKR have passed him up imo.

Because he was out there wanting to get a 3. BN is by far a great rebounder, & I find it funny you are trying to call him out on rebounding.... Dude is averaging almost 4R in 17 minutes.

I still think Gillis could take some of Mortons minutes. theyre both 6ft6...
Coach Painter clearly doesn’t think that Gillis is a three.

Painter trusts Morton on D at the three. Newman is probably more talented than Morton, but Morton is clearly doing the little things that are keeping him on the court. I think it is easier to see in terms of team defense that Morton plays well within the scheme, but it would not shock me to see Newman overtake him at some point this season.

Painter alluded to some of that post-game.....the defense and making good decisions with the ball.....also he has to take some of those shots to keep the defense honest, and Painter seems to think he'll come around despite him (and some others struggling). Now, if he turns the ball over or makes the wrong reads, you could see a change during games. It's a quandary when multiple players are missing. If Fletcher Loyer gets going, that will really help - he's 7/33 (from beyond the arc) last 5 games.....maybe it's an alignment issue or something else.

Maybe they've also been waiting for conference season to restart - subconsciously. Monday will say a lot - that's a huge game against a tough defensive, physical team on both ends of the floor.

I like Brandon Newman's production off the bench - just needs to keep figuring out letting the game come to him.....LOL on Zach Edey's comments post-game (at about 0:48) to Brandon Newman's blocks making him look like LeBron chasing these guys down.....

They don't see the plays where he's 2 steps behind his man the whole sequence. Good when he wants to be.
Still jacks shots...........

I wouldn’t change a thing yet. Tough 3 game week coming up. Matt will go the hot hand in conference games, rather than sharing time, especially in the 2nd halves. We just need to hope there is atleast one hot hand.

Newman is probably the most athletic guy on the team. Sometimes I think he feels like he is on a short leash. He is a scorer who has really improved on D and rebounding. With guys who can score, you have to be willing to give them some freedom and with that will come the occasional bad shot or turnover. I think if Brandon didn't feel like he had to look over his shoulder, he might really be able to light it up.

True on Morton's ability.

But I like BN scoring punch off bench, but still I think people discount greatly BNs defensive ability because they happen to like Morton's ability so much. BN has improved immensely on D.
Brandon is a good to very good on the ball defender who at times gets lost off the ball and is not always great with his team defensive assignments.

Great kid who continues to get better but laughable to say that his defense is good as Morton’s. Having said that if Brandon doesn’t force things on offense and can start to hit threes at a high clip he’ll play his way into as many minutes as he can handle.

Before the season I thought Brandon and Ethan would swap places. Thought Brandon might play off of Zach and Ethan could drive the ball better with Trey and Caleb. Maybe Matt thinks Brandon is needed for some offensive punch with the first substitutions and Ethan’s offense is not needed as much with the first group?

I think that’s part of it. When Zach is on the court, getting Zach the ball in good scoring position is top priority and Ethan is good at that. I also think Painter sees Loyer and Smith as options 2 and 3. On the second unit, Newman can be a top option along with TKR.

Newman seems to keep the scoring going when Edey goes to the bench. He might be better when he is the primary’s owing option. He is good enough to get his own shot when one-on-one. He could be wasted if he played with Edey.

Yeah, he wasn't counting on Ethan to light it up...and he would prefer a bit more shooting for Braden. Not sure I would put Braden as option 3 though...although Matt would probably like just a bit more shooting from Braden. I think Braden defers to Mason AND Ethan before himself. That is Braden the consummate team player that thinks pass first, pass second, pass third, but very capable of scoring.

Yesterday in the morning games I was sitting with Braden's granddad and great granddad and the granddad was telling me that Braden just needs to look a bit more for his shot. I said yes there are a few times he just needs to shoot it . I added that his motor never stops and he may be tired and just not have his legs under him as much as he wants, but yeah he could probably add 3 maybe 4 more shots per game or so...he is such a team player that he defers sometimes a bit too much, but that could change when a team really lays off of him and he has a lot of great looks.

Then at the end of the game a rather large man from Westfield that I went to school with (not westfield) when younger and aggreviate, but wouldn't dare let him catch me ;) walked up to me and said Braden just needs to shoot a bit more and granddad gives a soft elbow to me and laughs...

another side...a more human story. I told great granddad that it must be a joy to watch Braden play and he said I just wanted to live long enough to see him play...and I'm so proud of him! I told him Braden handles himself so well and he said that was important too. So there is part of a neat story that is not known. I hope he lives a long time to have so many fond viewings

My Dad 88 has watched every Purdue basketball game since he graduated. Fond memories of watching several with him back when Farm Bureau Insurance sponsored. I pray he gets to see the Boilers in the championship game one more time. He loves this Boiler team & BSmith, still, it baffles him why they can't hit their 3s? Lol.

One of the worst habits I have watched a lot of three point shooters have is they have a very bad tendency to just stand and watch their 3 point shot. Or they shoot and then run back to their defensive position. Very rarely do you see a 3 point shooter follow up on their shot to get the rebound if they miss.

It will happen...they will make them. Can't worry about it since there is not a lot that can be done other than "some" curb their attempts. I'm guessing maybe 6 or so years ago I sat across the gym and the guy beside us sometimes brought his father who was old enough to have played at Butler years ago. It was around Bobby Plumps time. He knew Marvin Woods and remembered Marvin telling him that next year (the year they won it) they would be pretty good. I really enjoy those that have some historic perspective on the game so many of us enjoy. I'm guessing that in the last half century that I have missed maybe 2 or 3 games either from in person, on TV or the radio...and far too many with that snowy picture on 18. ;)

Agree in general but someone playing alongside Zach has to hit open threes. If that’s Bronson he may find himself playing more minutes with that first group.

Haha - Death Wish for Boiler opponents!
