Box score observations

The positives:
1. We won- Yessssssss!
2. High FG%
3. High 30s 3pt %
4. Significant Total Rebound Margin

The Negatives:
1. BTN+ coverage
2. 67% FT%

I'd prefer we make 75%+ of our FTs regardless if the game is well in hand or not. If we miss when there's no pressure, what happens when it matters?

We were at 73% with 5-10 minutes left in the game. Wasn't the best day, but look at things individually.

Swanigan was 6-6. Haas was 6-7. Grady Eifert was 0-2. Two of those are numbers to care about, one isn't.

Still need to work on our:

1. Turnovers
2. Fouls [commit too many]
3. Free-throws [% a little too low]

There were some good points [assists, guard play, 3 pt. %, team cohesiveness/unity, new players] & bad. Just remember, it was NC A&T, not Butler or IU/MSU/MD.

Fair point. Haas' improvement is impressive.

Get used to the high fouls. That's gonna happen no matter what.
The game before it wasn't such a problem, last night it was. The little Napoleon was blowing a whistle every time he thought he could get some attention. Soon others caught it a bit. Last night there were many calls that the refs should have not made...or appeared that way in the gym. However, someone has convinced the NCAA that basketball needs more scoring and less physical play and so now calls are being made when there really isn't a play being made and the continuity of the game is busted.

On the other end...PUrdue will probably have greater depth than most teams and will handle the fouls better...assuming Purdue hits the FT's...

There were only 16 teams in all of the NCAA to shoot free throws that well last year. And none of them had most of their free throws shot by big men.

I think when the pressure is on...Caleb will be fine because he seems to be a pretty good FT shooter. Isaac looks to be improved, but there wasn't a shot under pressure for the big guy. It will be really tough for Isaac to get "good" with his hand size, but so far....GREAT

The thing that I noticed about the box was Mathias' line. I haven't seen the expanded one yet. Was he held to limited minutes? Injury? Illness? Foul trouble? I expect him to be a contributor. Anybody know?

I was at the game last night. IMO KS and Cline just outplayed him last night and there are only so many minutes. I won't be surprised to see those three do that to each other, in different combinations, all season long.

Typically, this subsides. Last year it was the same thing. Then by the time Big Ten play started, it was just back to normal. They obviously go a bit overboard at the beginning of the season.

The difference this year is that the referees have been given a "directive" to clean up the play and to allow more freedom of movement. In the past few years it has been "a point of emphasis". I watched a 1/2 hour special last night on ESPN that had some officials and the head of the rules committee on the panel. That was the point he made several times on the show.

All that said, I hope they go back to calling it closer to the way it has been. There were several times last night where all of us watching said this is going to be hard to watch if they call it like this all year.

Better get used to it, the plan is to stick with the freedom of move through out the year no matter how unpopular it is.

They are human. Thousands of fans in each game letting them know about it and they will not see as much, but it takes consistent displeasure loudly... :)

Watched the game online, and it seemed to me Dakota's assignment on offense was more to help distribute the ball, and RC/KS were definitely assigned to get open and shoot. Despite not scoring and taking only 1 shot (which was forced), I thought Dakota still did OK, with 3 assist and 3 rebounds. And I would imagine he had several "assists to the assist" in the role he was playing moving the ball.

Mathias will be fine. He seems to me to be the type of player that CK became and that is one that can shoot, but he knows that is not the only thing that makes a great player and is not always looking for a shot. I think he is still having a few health problems related to headaches from his sinus problems. He had a couple uncharacteristic turnovers when he has really been a very steady player. He will do what it takes to make his TEAM better not just himself.

Is this team significantly better at shooting than last year's team like I guaranteed in my 10 reasons to have unbridled optimism this year? I can't tell so far if they are...

I figured it was obvious since they've already set the all-time record and have at least 12 3's in both games. Did they have 12 in any game last year? Did they 5 3's in any game last year? Doesn't seem like they had 5 against Cincinnati.

Remind me again how many days it's been since IU beat us?

I'll go out on a limb and say your record will be perfect in games where Biggie hits 2 or more 3's.

Just in case there was actually anybody left wondering your true intentions...fans of Purdue do not refer to their team as 'your'...especially in response to an IU slam. Time to create a new username I guess since there isn't much else to do with your time.

I've heard, they say, if a team can shoot 70% from the line, that's pretty good. Usualy, the better the competition you play against, the lower your team FT% usually is. I'll be more interested in our FT % against Vanderbuilt or MSU, than most of the teams we're now playing. As long as our team FT % gradually improves over the course of the season.
