Welcome to this week's “BOILING OVER,” GoldandBlack.com’s weekly information-clearinghouse and analysis column meant for our site members and site members only. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in helping us keep what is sometimes delicate or proprietary information confined to this message board. This feature allows us to be more flexible in our reporting, to our readers' benefit, and we lose that ability if we can't keep this feature secure and the value of our site's membership at its peak. Additionally, we address recruiting and hiring processes in-depth and often without filter in this feature and we do it behind a subscription-protected barrier for a reason, in hopes of avoiding situations where our reporting can impact the recruiting process, which can happen occasionally.
So again, we appreciate everyone's cooperation very much. We know there are a lot of aggregator blogs out there, and a lot of you are on Twitter and other message boards. We don’t want to come off like Darth Vader (before he turned good at the end of "Return of the Jedi" of course) here, but we would be doing all our subscribers a disservice if weren’t proactive about protecting the value of their membership.
PURDUE FOOTBALL RECRUITING
So, some news first off.
Tomorrow, Purdue will have Penn State defensive line transfer Cole Brevard on campus for a visit. Not certain Purdue's offered Brevard yet, but the visit certainly suggests mutual interest here. We'll see what Purdue does in terms of an offer. Might be one of those deals where they'll want to be around the player some.
Brevard is from Carmel High School, defensive line coach Mark Hagen's alma mater and the school Purdue already has one 2023 commitment from (Winston Berglund) and could wind up with another in time (Will Heldt).
The 6-foot-3, 315-plus-pounder played In one game as a redshirt freshman this past season at Penn State. He'd have at least three seasons of eligibility remaining.
The former four-star recruit had offers out of high school from Clemson, Florida State, Michigan, Ohio State, Notre Dame and countless others.
In an interesting sign of the transfer carousel times, should Brevard transfer to Purdue, he'd be enrolling just months before the Boilermakers open their season against what will soon be his former team. (BN)
PURDUE FOOTBALL RECRUITING
With the status of wide receiver Milton Wright murky because of academic concerns, Purdue is shopping for wideouts in the portal.
Next week, Texas' Marcus Washington, a 6-2, 195-pound native of St. Louis, may visit.
He played 31 games in three seasons for the Longhorns, making eight starts. Washington played in 12 games in 2021 with seven starts, notching 18 receptions for 277 yards and two TDs. He has 25 career catches for 366 yards and three scores. Washington was a four-star prospect in the Class of 2019 who has up to two years of eligibility. (TD)
PURDUE FOOTBALL
Safety Marvin Grant made a surprise move into the portal on Sunday. It’s not known where he will land. Michigan, Penn State and Michigan State are possibilities. Rutgers may be a landing spot, too.
One thing is certain: Grant will not be back at Purdue. Grant’s departure is a slight blow, but Purdue should be able to absorb his loss. Look for Chris Jefferson to move into Grant’s starting spot next to Cam Allen.
Adams State transfer Bryce Hampton, a corner by trade, also will help after performing well in the spring.
PURDUE FOOTBALL
Updated staff base salaries for the coming year (just for this coming season), according to their contracts. (We don't have Karl Maslowski yet.)
Brian Brohm $550,000
Greg Brohm $285,000
(At Purdue, Greg Brohm's operations position's salary does come from the staff pool.)
Chris Barclay $325,000
David Elson $230,000
Ron English $550,000
Mark Hagen $500,000
Garrick McGee $210,000
(Note: This number may be offset some by severance from Florida, but the contract doesn't specifically say that.)
Ryan Wallace $225,000
Dale Williams $290,000
Ashton Youboty $210,000 (staff)
PURDUE BASKETBALL RECRUITING
Not much new on the transfer front.
Purdue is going to recruit Kyle Lofton from St. Bonaventure, but the same realities of the transfer market could apply there that applied to Nijel Pack and could apply to Tyrese Hunter, who Purdue did have a good visit with last weekend despite the obvious elephant in the room there. Hunter is probably only a one-year player wherever he goes, so the potential for a looming NBA payout could defray some NIL urgency, but probably not.
Lofton averaged 13.9 points and better than five assists during his four years with the Bonnies. All the usual suspects — Tennessee, Texas Tech, Arizona — figure to be involved there. He's reportedly on an official visit to Florida right now. (BN)
