Welcome to this week's “BOILING OVER,” GoldandBlack.com’s weekly information-clearinghouse and analysis column meant for our site members and site members only. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in helping us keep what is sometimes delicate or proprietary information confined to this message board. This feature allows us to be more flexible in our reporting, to our readers' benefit, and we lose that ability if we can't keep this feature secure and the value of our site's membership at its peak. Additionally, we address recruiting and hiring processes in-depth and often without filter in this feature and we do it behind a subscription-protected barrier for a reason, in hopes of avoiding situations where our reporting can impact the recruiting process, which can happen occasionally.
So again, we appreciate everyone's cooperation very much. We know there are a lot of aggregator blogs out there, and a lot of you are on Twitter and other message boards. We don’t want to come off like Darth Vader (before he turned good at the end of "Return of the Jedi" of course) here, but we would be doing all our subscribers a disservice if weren’t proactive about protecting the value of their membership.
PURDUE FOOTBALL RECRUITING
Couple headliner-type visitors for Purdue's junior day this weekend.
The highest-rated wide receiver in the state, Walker's held a Purdue offer since camp last summer and one can only presume the whole David Bell parallels could catch his eye.
Not sure he's coming this weekend or thereafter, but the North Carolina running back has said he's visiting Purdue within the next week. He figures to be a pretty highly recruited guy, but was also very excited about Purdue offering and eager to at least take a look.
A national recruit from Chicago Simeon.
Couple more ...
Also, there's a 2025 QB from Louisville coming named Cutter Boley who apparently already has a bunch of major offers. (staff)
PURDUE BASKETBALL RECRUITING
Nijel Pack is going to be a Purdue target on the transfer wire if/once he enters the portal and for whatever it's worth, his former Kansas State coach Bruce Weber would absolutely advocate for Purdue and there are some connections, too, in terms of familiarity that would help Purdue there.
But he's not going to be the only target.
Purdue has jumped in seriously with Indiana State's Tyreke Key and Bellarmine's Dylan Penn. You may remember both these guys since Purdue played against both of them at one point or another.
Key is one of the top scorers in ISU history with 1,650 points.
Penn was Bellarmine's leading scorer at nearly 17 per game, as they had a great year but weren't eligible to play in the NCAA Tournament, so they opted out of the postseason.
Unless there's something we don't know here, both of these guys would be using COVID years.
Not sure how hard Purdue might push for Princeton's Jaelin Llewellyn, but they have already contacted him. (BN)
PURDUE BASKETBALL
Purdue's Terry Johnson is right in the thick of it for the Ball State job as Ball State's administration conducts its search. They've spoken in-depth with Purdue's first-year assistant coach.
There are some names angling for this job.
UCLA assistant coach and former Indiana player Michael Lewis is one of them. It should be noted that Lewis is at this same NCAA Tournament site, making this one-stop shopping for Ball State in terms of meeting in-person with candidates.
Another potential entry Into this mix Is former Xavier head coach Travis Steele, who's from Indiana and has good connections within the state.
Not sure who else might be involved.
We'll see what happens, but Johnson's definitely a player here. (BN)
