Welcome to this week's “BOILING OVER,” GoldandBlack.com’s weekly information-clearinghouse and analysis column meant for our site members and site members only. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in helping us keep what is sometimes delicate or proprietary information confined to this message board. This feature allows us to be more flexible in our reporting, to our readers' benefit, and we lose that ability if we can't keep this feature secure and the value of our site's membership at its peak. Additionally, we address recruiting and hiring processes in-depth and often without filter in this feature and we do it behind a subscription-protected barrier for a reason, in hopes of avoiding situations where our reporting can impact the recruiting process, which can happen occasionally.

So again, we appreciate everyone's cooperation very much.We know there are a lot of aggregator blogs out there, and a lot of you are on Twitter and other message boards. We don’t want to come off like Darth Vader (before he turned good at the end of "Return of the Jedi" of course) here, but we would be doing all our subscribers a disservice if weren’t proactive about protecting the value of their membership.

PURDUE BASKETBALL

Don't have much for you on Matt Painter's ongoing search for Micah Shrewsberry's replacement, but can again tell you he was very interested in Incarnate Word head coach Carson Cunningham, but that will not happen.

We have no reason to think this coach is involved, but have wondered if Painter would pursue Charlotte Hornets assistant coach and Butler alumnus Ronald Nored, probably the closest thing to Micah Shrewsberry out there. It would keep things within the familiar Matt Painter-Brad Stevens-Purdue-Butler circle and could be a springboard for Nored the way it was more Shrewsberry, though he was a bit further along in his career when he came back.

Nored is known to have been a candidate for the Cincinnati job and talked with Minnesota as well. A stint with a high-level college program — one that could win a lot of games the next few seasons — and some additional recruiting experience, plus a bit of an apprenticeship with Painter could make some sense in terms of not just getting him a job, but preparing him for one. That's sort of the story behind Shrewsberry's return to Purdue and it just seems like a reasonable thing to try to recreate.

Again, this is merely speculation on our part, so don't go thinking this may happen. Just thinking out loud here.

Matt Painter said yesterday he's looked at coaches with minimal experience, ample experience and "unbelievable experience." Who the latter would be, we have no idea, but would love to know. Painter's never really hired an older coach, but there are some long-time NBA people out there he probably has some connections, too, as well as former college head coaches (which doesn't necessarily mean "older.")

Former East Tennessee State coach Jason Shay could be a sought-after candidate for high-major assistant coaching positions if he doesn't bounce right back to a head coaching job after his ordeal at ETSU, which we won't get into here for the sake of message board harmony.

No reason to think Purdue's involved there, either. Just thinking out loud here, again.

PURDUE BASKETBALL RECRUITING

Not sure how much suspense there is here, but we do like Purdue's chances to land 2021 addition Brian Waddell, and he may go into decision-making next week.

• Purdue offered this guy yesterday after a virtual meeting with the coaches and will seriously recruit him for the 2022 class. He's a player Paul Lusk was recruiting for Creighton.

We don't think he has anything to do with long-standing target Camden Heide, who remains a priority, as the two aren't particularly similar players, but needless to say Purdue can only take so many guys, so if a new offer in Minnesota maybe nudges Heide ever so slightly, so be it. But that was not Purdue's intent, we don't think.

• Speaking of Minnesota, as Purdue looks to expand its board at guard, it is recruiting the Twin Cities' Tre Holloman — also a football prospect — as well. Purdue's not offered yet, but he'll be watched this spring (in whatever form coaches can watch.)

• Purdue is going to try to recruit centers still in 2021 but don't hold your breath on them remaining a player for Vincent Iwuchukwu. They've been sort of drifting away from him for some time, and now with Steve Lutz gone, that probably seals the deal. (BN)

PURDUE FOOTBALL RECRUITING

Purdue has been very involved with Vanderbilt running back transfer Keyon Brown, but has been working through his transcripts before clearing the path for his potential enrollment.

Meanwhile, the Boilermaker coaching staff has also become a primary factor for Notre Dame running back transfer Kendall Abdur-Rahman as well. He's a smaller, but faster, running back with some wide receiver history, as well, so would represent a bit of a different look from what Purdue currently has at the position.

Not sure exactly where things stand with either of these guys, but have long heard favorable things about Purdue's chances on both fronts, potential hang-ups aside.

Defensive tackle George Silvanic of Air Force, that seems to have fall through due to the unique circumstances required when transferring from the Academy. It's a different standard there and he may have fallen just short on some of the requirements. (TD)

PURDUE FOOTBALL RECRUITING

Something to maybe keep an eye on.

This guy just decommitted from Notre Dame.

We're told that during the pandemic he actually took a self-guided visit to Purdue at one point, and that Purdue, Iowa and Boston College might be three schools he's really Interested In being recruited by.

Purdue needs a tight end In this class, clearly, and has some high-end targets on the board, but nothing even remotely resembling clarity at this point.

Two of Purdue's near-by priorities are Ohio's Brody Foley and Charlie Kenrich. Another, Chicagoland's Chris Petrucci, just committed to Northwestern.

PURDUE FOOTBALL
Purdue's football staff is now complete but some things remain to be sorted out over time in terms of how the secondary will be divided between Ron English and newly hired James Adams. English came on as corners coach initially but that was before safeties coach Anthony Poindexter left. English has extensive safeties experience and Adams has coached corners, so there could be some shuffling there.

There may be some titles left to be sorted out also, "co-defensive coordinator" or whatever it may be. (TD)
