Welcome to this week's "BOILING OVER," GoldandBlack.com's weekly Ultimate Ticket information-clearinghouse and analysis column meant for our subscribers and our subscribers only.
We appreciate everyone's cooperation in helping us keep what is sometimes delicate information confined to this message board.
We certainly don't want it to come to this, but if there are problems, subscriptions have and will be canceled over this.
We know there are a lot of blogs out there and a lot of you are on Twitter and other message boards, and we don't want to come off like Darth Vader here, but we would be doing all our subscribers a disservice if weren't proactive about protecting the value of their subscription. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.
Additionally, we address recruiting in-depth and often without filter in this feature and we do it behind a subscription-protected barrier for a reason, in hopes of avoiding situations where our reporting can impact the recruiting process, which can happen occasionally. So again, we appreciate everyone's cooperation very much.
For the most part, Greg Hudson has been a roving defensive coordinator at Purdue. He's worked with the Jack linebackers (when that was a position) and has gathered young players for film study.
But he's typically spent his time looking at the bigger picture, molding the defense overall while trusting the position coaches to develop talent.
That's going to change this spring.
Hudson said Friday he'll be coaching the defensive ends - not sure this is a title change, necessarily, but a responsibility tweak if nothing else.
He's been meeting with the group, watching film and testing their knowledge of the defense. He gave them an installation test - to judge their retention - recently and said the group averaged 90 percent on the 20 questions that required answers about specific jobs in each defense.
Hudson seemed excited about the role.
"It's going to give those guys a little more attention, a little more detail and try to get a little more productivity," he said.
It'll be interesting to see how this plays out in practices, which begin next week. Typically, the entire defensive line is together as a unit, under Rubin Carter. Perhaps Hudson will break the ends away from the group at points, which sometimes can happen in the secondary with safeties separating from the cornerbacks in some periods of practice. (SC)
Tomorrow is the first of three Purdue junior day events for unofficial recruiting visits. We have very little to tell you in terms of confirmed visitors, but here's a few names at least.
(We will obviously try to find out much more after the fact.)
• Offered wide receiver Ben Skowronek said earlier this week he might visit Purdue this weekend. We'll see if he does.
• Georgia running back Kameron Pickett. No offer yet, but he'd seem like a guy Purdue is legitimately recruiting and is obviously interested enough to make the visit.
• Fort Wayne Carroll quarterback Aidan Smith is supposed to come. No idea what level of prospect he is - though he does have MAC offers - and as we have told you, we are not sure Purdue is going to take a QB in this class. We'd bet against it right now, in fact.
Carroll teammate Dylan Conner, a linebacker, is supposed to visit also. Not sure if he's a prospect or not.
• Missouri defensive lineman Hayden Johnson has said he's visiting. He has at least five offers to this point and Purdue has gotten some traction with some Missouri prospects. A few of them visited during season.
Ohio center Sean Rattay is also supposed to visit, according to ElevenWarriors.com.
Again, we will hopefully get a much better list after the fact. Don't think this will be a dead weekend just because we don't have many names up front. (BN)
We have told you before Purdue has had some things, potentially big ones, cooking for possible 2015 late additions. Can't tell you more at this point, but if it materializes, it may this weekend.
Not trying to be a tease here, but we don't want to impact the process, but just wanted to at least let you know something could be brewing.
Stay tuned.
Purdue remains in the market at tight end, wide receiver and defensive line, from what we understand. (BN)
Skowronek on his high basketball teammate, Caleb Swanigan: "I have no idea (where he's going). He doesn't talk about it at all. If you didn't know who he was, you wouldn't think he has any offers. He just never talks about it."
Swanigan, we think, was at the Michigan State game against Purdue the other night. (BN)
Stuff to come tonight: We're going to try to cover C.J. Walker's sectional game against Cathedral, then head over to Bankers Life Fieldhouse to catch E'Twaun Moore in the locker room after they play the Pacers.
Stay tuned tonight for something on one or the other or both. (BN)
