First of all...I'm certain I'll catch a lot of flack for this post but I cannot help what I see. I somewhat believe it's obvious why Painter continues to whiff on the big fish. If I were a recruit of Purdue Basketball, one of the very first things I would look at (other than academics) is style of play and team camaraderie. Although I believe CMP did a much better job this past season with pulling the team closer, it certainly wasn't exceptional and once again had a post season defection in Bryson Scott. (He did recruit these young men after all)
Overall CMP IS a good coach. He may know the X's & O's on the defensive side better than any coach on the collegiate level. He knows how to attack any situation, given the blueprint of what his team is facing. On the flip side, he seems to struggle (specifically on offense) anytime a surprise move by an opposing coach or foul trouble of starters arise. I feel as if CMP has been in coaching in the B10(14) long enough that opposing coaches know this as well. The overall 'tightness' that Purdue Basketball teams have played with since 1980 is almost obvious. Every OFFENSIVE move is exaggerated and many times, telegraphed. I feel like this is rooted directly to coaching. These players look afraid to do something wrong. And rightfully so...they get benched if they do. Do I think a player should be able to make numerous mistakes and stay in? No...but micro-coaching has never worked and I don't believe it ever will. I have witnessed ONE player since 1980 do things 'unconventional' (not EXACTLY to the coaches wishes) at Purdue. All he did was lead the nation in scoring and take us to the Elite 8 and get picked # 1 in the NBA draft. I'm just saying these blue chip kids don't want to play for a stiff and many times ugly offense. They want freedom...just like Big Dog had.
