We'll have a free notebook off each day of spring ball. (Plus our analysis and practice video for GoldandBlack.com members.)

Hear what David Blough and Darrell Hazell had to say about the opening day.

LINK: Notebook

And still this.....
Purdue opened its fourth set of spring practices under Darrell Hazell on Tuesday, and, in regards to one key position, it essentially had the same vibe as his first: The Boilermakers still are searching for a starting quarterback.

At least it seems that way with Hazell opting not to call David Blough the unquestioned No. 1 this spring — despite Blough starting eight games last season. Redshirt freshmanElijah Sindelar is competing for the starting job, and it appears as though that competition will last throughout Purdue's 15 practices and perhaps even into the fall.........is it going to be a game day decision in Sept as to who the starter is? Why is DH afraid to make a decision or is it incompetence. If someone beats out a starter fine but pick on and build a team for Pete's sake.

I've seen them both. If not for knee surgery keeping him limited in prep time last fall this team would be Sindelar's to lose. No comparison in abilities. On this one I'll defer to DH although I don't think it's because he's gained any more insight from the available tape.

Blough has game experience. If Sindelar is the real deal, he has time to overtake blough.

Picking a starting QB for Darrell is a lot like the movie Groundhog's Day. Every day is the same but different.

At least Haze is consistently indecisive:

-can't decide which QB to name the starter in spring practice, so there is no chemistry developed FOUR years in a row.

-Waits 3 years to get rid of awful coordinators

-can't decide on which Purdue legacies to offer, so he offers neither one and they commit to ND and IU.

-can't decide which offense to run in spring practice, so there is no chemistry developed FOUR years in a row.

-Waits 3 years to get rid of awful coordinators and still isn't sure he's seen enough tape to justify releasing them.

-can't convince Purdue legacies to wear turtlenecks, so they commit to ND and IU.

FIFY!!!

Pretty sad when it is the same old story every Spring. If I was one of these quarterbacks, I would do all I can to impress the coaching staff and get the nod.

This is what makes it so hard to have any confidence in Hazell's recruiting. Time and time again he's had spring practice and August camp (not to mention being around the players all year to see how their off-season work is progressing) and he still does't seem to be able to access who the players are that are most likely to succeed.

The rankings aren't generous to his recruiting but the "he's finding diamonds in the rough because he's a good talent evaluator" argument doesn't hold water ether. Some spliced game footage and attending a game or two is much less than he gets to see than with his current players and if he can't properly evaluate them so I don't know how he can with less material from recruits.

I love how hazell thinks he's fooling anyone. If he had any ability or balls he'd make a definitive statement ... Instead he's setting things up for the classic Purdue "new quarterback mulligan; oops guess it's a new season! Nah, nah, do over!"
