Not feeling very confident about our chances to retain the cup this year based on how each conference has fared up to this point. 3 teams have played really well ~ Michigan State, Purdue, and Iowa (we will see about Iowa after they play Dayton tonight. As I type...not a good start against Dayton (secret scrimmage opponent...shhhhh)...but it is very early. OTOH, the ACC has looked pretty good with the starts by Miami, Syracuse (play Texas A&M tomorrow after upsetting ranked UCONN), and Pittsburgh (looked good in the cancelled game against Gonzaga). Of course there are also ranked power teams Duke, North Carolina, Virginia, and Notre Dame (lost to Monmouth tonight which might knock them out of rankings). Louisville hasn't played anybody of note, but might sneak into the top 25 at least in the coaches poll as they are currently 27th and there have been quite a few top 25 losses this week.

Here are the games. I'm having a hard time seeing even 7 wins to tie.

Monday, Nov. 30
Clemson at Minnesota
Wake Forest at Rutgers

Tuesday, Dec. 1
Maryland at North Carolina
Virginia at Ohio State
Michigan at NC State
Purdue at Pittsburgh
Northwestern at Virginia Tech
Miami (Fla.) at Nebraska

Wednesday, Dec. 2
Indiana at Duke
Louisville at Michigan State
Notre Dame at Illinois
Wisconsin at Syracuse
Florida State at Iowa
Penn State at Boston College

I'm hoping Minnesota can start us off strong by beating Clemson, but they have already lost a couple of games and haven't looked very good early. Clemson pounded Rutgers. Wake Forest should beat Rutgers...Rutgers has simply looked horrible. Let's hope to go 1-1 the first day.

I could see Maryland beating North Carolina even on the road, but Maryland has not looked that great this early in the season...but fortunately North Carolina has not looked that great either. I'd give an edge to the home team. Virginia seems like a safe bet to beat an Ohio State that has already lost two home games. Michigan also has underwhelmed...but so has NC State. State did beat LSU, which I was pleased to see because I am already sick of the Ben Simmons talk. He is pretty amazing, but ESPN tends to suck every bit of potential enjoyment with their star infatuation. This is close to a pick 'em, but maybe the slightest edge to the home team. I could see the Purdue game going either way, but prefer to play the homer card and say our Boilers for the first win by less than 10 points. Plus the BIG simply needs them to win this year imo. At the moment I type this I like Northwestern on the road, but am curious to see for VT plays against Iowa State tomorrow. Hard to pick against Miami...they look like a team that still deserves a higher ranking and excelled on a neutral site against 2 ranked squads. Nebraska has looked like an improved team early from last season, but hard to pick against Miami. I would hope for 3-3, but think it will be more like 2-4 for the BIG.

Indiana and Duke. This Duke team feels beatable...but not by this IU squad...especially on the road. Michigan State and Valentine look amazing so far. I am hoping they continue to play at this level and reverse trend by peaking early and fading late in the season...especially when we play them. Michigan State over Louisville at home. Notre Dame lost some shine losing to Monmouth, but Illinois might be the second most disappointing team in the BIG during the early part of the season behind IU. Notre Dame in this one. I like the Wisky and Syracuse match-up. I wouldn't be surprised to see either team win, but Syracuse is at home and has played quite well as I referenced earlier. Syracuse. Iowa and Florida State...I really like Iowa at home and like how they have played so far, especially throttling Marquette. Iowa with the win. Boston College looks quite weak...but Penn State looks even worse. This game might be unwatchable for anybody but Bill Walton. Boston College only because they are at home. Again hoping for 3-3, but guessing 2-4.

Maybe our conference will step up and surprise, but Wisky, Ohio State, Michigan, IU, and Illinois are teams that were supposed to look better than what they have shown in this early season, while some ACC teams have stepped up along with known powers. I'm thinking 5-9 and just hoping for a 7-7 tie to keep the cup home with the BIG.

Hard time seeing the B1G win it after this week.

But stranger things have happened.

So we play the games.

It would be shocking to see the BIG retain this year. Major down year for the conference as a whole. Top three teams are very good but past that lots of mediocrity to down right terribleness.

I couldn't care less so long as we win. These mini tourneys are fun but better to be the better team in the second best conference. IF MSU, UMd., Purdue win then we are stronger at the top which is what matters when you are at the top. I see us sweating seeding more than getting in this year.

Monday, Nov. 30 Clemson at Minnesota - Minnesota
Wake Forest at Rutgers - Wake Forest

Tuesday, Dec. 1
Maryland at North Carolina - North Carolina
Virginia at Ohio State - Virginia
Michigan at NC State - NC State
Purdue at Pittsburgh - Purdue
Northwestern at Virginia Tech - Northwestern
Miami (Fla.) at Nebraska - Miami

Wednesday, Dec. 2
Indiana at Duke - Not drinking the Kool-Aid - DUKE
Louisville at Michigan State - Michigan State
Notre Dame at Illinois - Notre Dame
Wisconsin at Syracuse - Wisconsin
Florida State at Iowa - Iowa
Penn State at Boston College - BC

I have a hard time seeing Maryland beating UNC. UNC has looked average thus far, but they have been playing without their best player Marcus Paige. I think there's a chance he plays in that game. I could see a 10+ win for UNC. Maryland relies too much on Tremble getting is 15 Free Throw attempts a game, which he won't get at Chapel Hill.

<Didn't see this thread when I wrote this), but unfortunately i agree it looks like it's going to be a tough one for the Big Ten this year. It's so early and i haven't seen a lot of the lower tier teams play at all but it seems like most of the 50/50 matchups have the ACC team at home. Also seems as though a lot of the worst Big Ten teams are hosting.

After a growler of Big Ten Kool-Aid, the best I can come up with is a 7-7 tie. Maybe PSU beats BC or Wisconsin gets hot, but it's going to be tough for Minnesota, Michigan and Northwestern to hold up in this scenario. Even the Purdue game will likely be the toughest game to date, so who knows how they respond especially if Davis is out. This looks like a year when we just root for Purdue and the top teams as suggested above and avoid ESPN even more than usual for at least a week.

Big/Ten ACC Challenge Schedule
Monday
Wake Forest @ Rutgers ESPN2 ESPN3
Clemson @ Minnesota ESPN2 ESPN3
Tuesday
Michigan @ NC State ESPN2 ESPN3
Northwestern @ Virginia Tech ESPNU ESPN3
Virginia @ Ohio State ESPN ESPN3
Miami @ Nebraska ESPNU ESPN3
Purdue @ Pittsburgh ESPN2 ESPN3
Maryland @ North Carolina ESPN ESPN3
Wednesday
Louisville @ Michigan State ESPN ESPN3
Wisconsin @ Syracuse ESPN2 ESPN3
Penn State @ Boston College ESPNU ESPN3
Indiana @ Duke ESPN ESPN3
Notre Dame @ Illinois ESPN2 ESPN3
Florida State @ Iowa ESPNU ESPN3

My best guess is we win 5. And that's a stretch.
Purdue
Michigan
Michigan State
Northwestern
Iowa

After that, there are only 2-3 the B1G even has a shot at if you ask me.
The ACC has looked every bit as shaky as the B1G. I think there will be some pretty interesting games.

8-6 ACC
Clemson
at Minnesota
Wake Forest at Rutgers
Maryland at North Carolina
Virginia at Ohio State
Michigan at NC State
Purdue at Pittsburgh
Northwestern at Virginia Tech
Miami (Fla.) at Nebraska
Indiana at Duke
Louisville at Michigan State
Notre Dame at Illinois
Wisconsin at Syracuse
Florida State at Iowa
Penn State at Boston College

8-6 ACC
Clemson
at Minnesota
Wake Forest at Rutgers
Maryland at North Carolina
Virginia at Ohio State
Michigan at NC State
Purdue
at Pittsburgh
Northwestern at Virginia Tech
Miami (Fla.) at Nebraska
Indiana at Duke
Louisville at Michigan State
Notre Dame
at Illinois
Wisconsin at Syracuse
Florida State at Iowa
Penn State
at Boston College
you only have 5 home wins. that would be shocking to me.

8-6 ACC
Clemson
at Minnesota
Wake Forest at Rutgers
Maryland at North Carolina
Virginia at Ohio State
Michigan at NC State
Purdue
at Pittsburgh
Northwestern at Virginia Tech
Miami (Fla.) at Nebraska
Indiana at Duke
Louisville at Michigan State
Notre Dame
at Illinois
Wisconsin at Syracuse
Florida State at Iowa
Penn State
at Boston College

I could conceivable see Wisconsin and Illinois winning to make it 8-6 Big Ten but I could more conceivably see BC and UNC winning to make it 10-4 ACC.

Currently, 1-1 with Wake Forest outlasting Rutgers and Minnesota beating Clemson.

For those of you who like to "debate" about tonight's game, here is more "fuel" from the be-all-end-all behemoth "expert" that is ESPN.....courtesy of ESPN.com:

i
i
No. 11 Purdue at Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania), 9 p.m., ESPN2, Tuesday: Purdue is off to its best start since the 2009-10 season, thanks in part to a sweltering defense. The Boilermakers are holding opponents to 31.9 percent shooting and rank fourth nationally in defensive efficiency, according to Ken Pomeroy. But they have to face the Panthers in the Peterson Events Center, where Pittsburgh is 121-4.

Prediction: Pittsburgh 70, Purdue 69

I think if Purdue can take better care of the ball, including good shot selection, and hit a good % of FT's.....the Boilers can win a close one.......otherwise, it's their first loss. Another thing I haven't seen discussed is much is Purdue still has a tendency to leave some open three-point attempts......that might also be the difference because I wouldn't count on Pitt missing a lot of those tonight. Should be a really good battle, either way.

I agree with some other posts that it's the defense and team leadership that Purdue misses most with Ray Davis, not his improved offense. Purdue can win without Ray, but it will be a lot harder......they can also lose with Ray on the floor as well. This is a good test and will help both teams down the line, regardless of the result.

Now, have at it.

"where Pittsburgh is 121-4."

That is my biggest concern. Make no mistake, this will be one of the most hostile environments that Purdue will go to this year.

I didn't originally think B1G would have shot to win the challenge, but tied 4-4 going into tonight, it could happen. I see the four potential wins coming from: MSU, PSU, Illinois, and Iowa. The Illini over Notre Dame is a stretch, but they are finally back to playing in their campus stadium - maybe that will help.

IU will lose by 15+, and Syracuse is hot while Wisconsin is not.

In any case, what really matters is our Boilers won. Great road win! Hope we stay level-headed.

Great win by the Boilers! I didn't see the game, only the final score, but it looks like Purdue will have a very good year.
I don't see the Big winning the challenge though

Go BIG! It looks like we will do no worse than another tie as our conference won all 3 early games today. Kudos to Penn State and Wisky for winning road games. If Iowa can take care of business at home we will win the challenge yet again.

I find it very interesting that all the talking heads who predicted an ACC sweep are suddenly very quite. No I was wrong, or wow that was a surprise. Just shows you what they do and do not know.

I by no means have seen each and every game played so far, nor am I an expert, but of those I have viewed both PU IMHO has shown the best team ball I have seen this year. .

B1G victorious & Hoosiers defense further proven to be undeniably weak. Not a bad coupla days.

Crean's probably trying to take his mind off the losses by spending some QT in the tanning bed at the local strip mall salon. I heard he tried his own tanning bed at home, but it just didn't smell the same as the strip mall ones.

Those "experts" are obviously overpaid.
