If you were to ask me a month ago I would've ranked Purdue as a Top 6-8 job in the Big10. As it looks now IMO and what seems like to outsiders is Purdue might only be ahead of Rutgers. How would you rank the schools if all were open and available?
1.Ohio St 2.Michigan
3.Wisconsin 4.Penn St
5. Nebraska 6. Michigan St
7. Iowa 8.Maryland
9.Minnesota 10. Illinois
11.Northwestern 12.Indiana
13. Purdue 14. Rutgers

I group the B1G like this;

Top Tier - OSU, UM, NEB, PSU

Upper Middle Class - WI, MSU, Iowa

Mid - PU, ILL, MINN

Bottom - MD, NW, RUTG, IU

Historically we are mid-level, not in the top half (of 14 or even 12), but right below the half cutline. Perception right now - most would say we are in the "bottom" grouping. I think we can return to strong Mid very quick with the right coach. IMO We should be in the Top 4 of the West every season, and battling to win it some years (NEB, WI, IA, PU).

MD seems flashy now bc of the UA money. I don't think overall it is a better job than PU. If NW didn't have Fitz they would be bottom of the league. He goes, they go. Not better than PUR overall. IU, fukking hell no. I don't think either MINN or ILL are "better" jobs, I think they are about equal. They other 7 are on a higher level for sure.

NU pulls in top 30 recruiting classes. No way are they that low. Also, the OP is posting when the only jobs open this season in the B1G were Purdue and IU..and IU scrambled to name a coach because they probably saw the difficulty Purdue was having to find the right fit.

The regular season JUST ended and the shuffling will now start. Would it have been nice to name a coach 5 weeks ago? Sure, but I'd rather wait and find the right fit than a flashy hire.

NU - yeah they are lucky to have Fitz. Not better than PU overall IMO.

Rest - Are you sure you responded to the right thread??

Colorado was seen as one of the worst jobs in P5 a year ago, now it's probably seen as mid/top half of the PAC. Amazing how perception changes once you start winning.

Yes...just seems like a lot of what I would consider some what level headed posters are getting a 'sky is falling' attitude. Your posts kind of seems that way and wanted to put a bit of perspective in. Didn't mean to offend or inflame.

But that is based on consideration of the respective program's full history, and, with the notion that things were all good otherwise.

The world of college football has changed, and changed dramatically...and Purdue was left in the dust...it is very much not only a bottom tier program presently, it is, other than Rutgers, the worst job as it stands within the B1G presently.

Purdue at one point was indeed in that mix that you allude to...but it has had a precipitous fall...it never made the commitment necessary, and even with what they are attempting to show right now as a commitment is only to try to bring them to a competitive point with respect to other mid-tier/lower-tier programs in the conference...there are still significant stadium issues relative to most of those other programs as well that need to be addressed, never mind the obvious in that those other schools have actually made significant commitments to their programs already, and continue to...unlike Purdue who made a long overdue commitment to a facility upgrade that was beyond needed and due...but THAT is not what has been, is, or will be holding Purdue back as a football program.

Understood, but I don't discount history entirely, and I don't think a thoughtful coach who is considering coming here would either. I guess I am ranking at their best potential with the right coach, right admin support, supportive fanbase (we have the 8th biggest stadium in B1G), etc. etc.

The main gripe against what has happened with PU is that resources, etc, were not spent wisely, and our focus RE football has been lost for the past several years (since Tiller?)

If those things have been righted, Bobinski and Pres. Daniels are on board (Daniels supposedly dropping FUKKBOMBS in mtngs RE the state of the program), $$$$ has been allocated and corrected, and things are in the upswing, I see PUR as a better job than #13. Especially being in the B1G West.

We just need the right guy to right the ship, like CO has and even UM with Harbaugh. We've been wo a leader and an identity since Tiller.

edit; I get that we are in a bad spot, a fukking horrible spot, and perception is we are a tough rebuild and many other angry adjectives that don't need repeating, but I'd like to think we have more to offer than what current "perceptions" of ESPN, etc others, think we have. It's either that or just give up on Purdue, and for me (and most of us) that's not an option.

Maryland a bottom-tier job? They're in the middle of a recruiting hotbed and are beneficiaries of Under Armour's largesse.
