I have a feeling the Horvath loss is going to loom large in our game. Hope I'm wrong.

Some interesting matchups here:

  • I'll be curious to see what a ranked Cincinnati team can do at Indiana. I'm also curious to see how many fans they bring.
  • This will be the first real test for MSU. Are they the real deal? For that matter, is Miami?
  • Picking Minnesota on the road at any P5 team is a gamble. I just don't know if they have the defense.
  • I was feeling pretty good about Purdue's chances last weekend, given how ND has had to scrape by its first two so-so opponents. But, the more I think about it, the more I'm afraid the Horvath injury is going to make Purdue too one-dimensional. The defense might have to carry a lot of the load Saturday.
  • I suspect Duke is a better team than Northwestern, and they're at home. I picked Northwestern hoping Fitzgerald can conger up something--which he does more often than not.
  • I'll say this for Auburn--I never thought I'd see the day when an SEC team leaves the SEC footprint to play a non-conference game. And, they're going into Happy Valley. Kudos, Auburn.

Purdue 22-21. Try as I want to follow the logic. I can't bet against Purdue vs ND. Logic says we need Horvath to bang into the line because if we go all pass, our D will be on the field too long. Banging the line will also set up the misdirection plays better. And we need Horvath's size for blocking. However, I think Brohm will line up a TE as an H back. We have to pray that our D won't get too tired and Finneran will hit all 5 FG attempts. Our unsung hero on D can be Ansell whose strategy can win it for us.

1) They'll beat Indiana soundly. They're just better fundamentally than IU. I also think Ohio State will one day regret that they didn't hold onto Fickell.
2) Michigan St may be a bit too one dimensional to beat Miami at Miami.
3) Colorado's defense is pretty stout. They gave up less than 300 total yards to Texas A&M. I think they'll handle Minnesota.
4) It would be good to have Horvath. But I don't think he'll be the difference in the game. We probably wouldn't get many yards in this game on the ground either way.
5) No real opinion here. I think Northwestern will probably get things figured out.
6) Big game for Penn St. I think their defense keeps them in this one. But I'm not sure if they'll generate enough points to win or not.

That's probably true about the rushing yardage. But, the ND defense would at least have to pay attention to the run with Horvath on the field. Hopefully, Doerue and Downing can do enough to keep the Irish honest. We will see.

It certainly isn't unusual for a Fitz team to start slow and finish strong. I'm just not sold on their QB. Picked them anyway against my better judgment.

30-20 purdue wins if...purdue doesn't get a lead and take their foot off the gas to try to run the clock out.

edit: i'd almost rather see them come from behind with a couple late td"s. one by the D

I will be more than happy to be wrong on the Purdue/ND game. I just see it as a 24-20 game as we always seem to squander opportunities up there.

That Northern Illinois pick has gotta be the blooper pick of the week. You were the only poster on here to pick them to win.

Against my better judgement, I picked Purdue and expected 4 things to be successful for us to win. The only thing that was was Finnerman. We are so lucky to have him. Bell and Karloftis both played well and were hampered by the refs' no calls. Both QB's played well and were hampered by players who have to learn how to catch. Coaches are grown men so I will criticize them. It is obvious we needed more time to throw. We missed Horvath so why didn't we have a TE used as an H back and extra blocker? Without an H Back, we ran one misdirection and lost yardage. I thought with playing Conn last week that we would have a few tricks in the can.

BTW, both Illinois and Minnesota played well last week and are progressing nicely. They along with Nebraska, Rutgers, and Michigan State look better than I thought. Their coaching staffs should be very proud. Throw in Penn State as well.
