Even if Bell were to pass the concussion protocol and be cleared to play Sat, is it critical to have him on the field to beat IL?

This is obviously a game PU has to have. It's close to a must win.

But, do you risk Bell if you think you can beat IL without him?

I think we can beat them without Bell. The question is can we beat them without Bell, Horvath, Rice, and Trice.

I know we are deep at wr but asking probably your 4-5th best wr to come in and make an impact is tough.

Can't take any conference game for granted. If he is cleared to play he is cleared to play. Now maybe let's not throw passes that hang him out to dry unless absolutely necessary.

If Bell is ready to go you play him. We can't assume a win against anyone and it's hard to see a path to 6 wins without beating Illinois.

That said, if he is comprised you don't play him. His health and future is more important than any game.

From everything I've read about Bell, we need to be more concerned with him trying to play when he shouldn't be.

Opportunity is there for yaseen and Sullivan .. let’s see it. I wouldn’t be shocked to see broc Thompson there as well.. @TeamThompson88 .. Thompson seems like the kind of receiver with the precision to run some nice routes at that spot .. I would be least surprised to see Wright stay to the left and Thompson get some receptions on the right.

Health is more important than 1 game. I’m sure our trainers will keep the players health and safety at the forefront.
Agreed. And I'm sure of that too.

Here's my hot take. David is safer now being in concussion protocol, meaning he is under watchful eye and actually has to demonstrate that everything is aok, versus all the players who might be dinged up but not letting on.

If he's cleared to play, he'll play. If he doesn't, it's not like winning or losing to Illinois is going to change the entire trajectory of the season. We're likely a 4 to 6 win team. 5 to 6 wins if we beat Illinois. 4 to 5 wins if we don't. It would be nice to make a bowl game. But it is what it is.

There’s a tremendous difference between 5 and 6 wins for this program right now.

I agree with the first sentence. Not the rest. This is one of those games that Purdue needs to win to have momentum going forward. There are a lot of winnable games left on the schedule, save O$U. A loss to Illinois in my opinion is incredibly defeating.

Love Bell but fortunately we play ILL. I think we get the W without him

Yeah, one win. In the end, Bell shouldn't and likely won't be the difference between winning and losing at Illinois. The defense will be. The OL will be. If he's out of the game, he's a tremendous loss from a confidence level for the team. But there's enough talent at WR there that they should be able to beat Illinois right now. If they don't, I don't think Bell would be the only difference maker. And if they can't beat Illinois, well...

The problem is that with Rice out too, and butterfingers on the other side, you really only have Anthrop as a reliable, accomplished WR. Sheffield, MMoore, Yaseen, Sullivan, Thompson...none strike fear, but at least one of them is going to have to step up. As deep as our WR corp was a few months ago, it certainly isn't right now.

Don’t understand why Wright keeps getting all the playing time, if a receiver can’t catch the ball , what are they doing on the field.

Not questioning the coaches as the see day in and day out the player performance in practice. That said, Broc Thompson should get more touches.

Others that I'd like to see & know if they are close are: Preston Terrell, Abdur-Rahmaan Yaseen, Kory Taylor, TE's Kyle Bilodeau and Paul Piferi. The last two plug in as possession WR's if needed since we use WR's in short passing routes as runs, then get the ball to a bigger body that may have enough speed to take contact and get yards after catch. A WR at ~ 250 lbs would be harder to get to the ground than a 190-210 lb guy. Why waste speed of Piferi who reportedly ran in California track in the speed events.
I guarantee that IL would not have game planned for that.
I remember the days of Kyle Ingraham at 6'9" TE towered over others and did well in red zone. The only thing that kept him out of the end zone was grades if I recall correctly. Dang that hurt to lose him. I know this...6'5" some wheels and a good frame = 3rd down possession or goal line corner jump balls.

A lot of overreactions here to a small sample size. This isn't some unknown newby. This is #2 guy from last season and solid #2 coming into this season. 100 yards last time out against this week's opponent. Obviously he is showing well in practice. But, yeah, let's just put him back on the shelf for a couple of subpar games.
To paraphrase JaMarcus: They'll get it fixed.

It's easy to get frustrated with Wright. But he had some good games last year and has all the skills to be a very good receiver. He just needs to make the bread and butter catches and he'll be all right. Broc Thompson is also a good receiver.

We can all sit here and lament on Bell not being available. But there's plenty of theoretical talent behind him at WR to beat Illinois, if the OL even bothers to show up...

If we had to choose where we could afford an injury it's likely at WR. Even though Bell is far and beyond our best WR we still have good players behind him.
If we lost a corner (Trice) that burns much more.

The term Monday morning quarterback exists for a reason. I can imagine what people would say if the coaches put an unproven player like Sullivan or Yaseen out there against ND and they dropped a pass or ran a wrong route that led to an interception. There are a lot of good receivers on this roster, but none (aside from Bell) that are immune to dropping a pass. It happens. Heck, some of Tiller's teams would have 6-8 drops per game.

How do you think billodeau looked against UConn?

Jamari Brown was excellent against ND. He’s a big corner and he runs well. Outside of the 1 PI, he didn’t give much up at all.

IMO, not great. I was always curious as to why he came in with the accolades and the USAAAG invite and didn’t get PT. After watching him, he’s slow, an average blocker and doesn’t look like a great receiving target either.

Sometimes you and I have the exact same thoughts lol

I call it getting Jason kacinko’d .. where everyone between us and where the guy lives is like :elbow to the side: “pass”

It’s good that Miller is outstanding for a young tight end

I don’t see it that way at all. He’s young and hasn’t played much because the people in front of him (#87 and #88) are both more experienced and they are both talented.

I was at the UCONN game. Bilodeau didn’t look particularly slow to me (I don’t recall Purdue throwing much his way in that game.) He is an average blocker right now. I think Cravaack is a better blocker but not necessarily a better overall TE. Now he’s out for the season. I think Bilodeau has good hands from what I’ve seen.

I agree. I worry more about Mackey than I do about Brown.
Mackey has played pretty well so far this year. ND tried to pick on Brown much of the game (not Mackey). He held up well. Mackey is a little shorter and has had more trouble sometimes with bigger WRs in the past. Frankly, I think the secondary has looked much better this year. They seem much more assignment/technique sound. We’ve given up some big plays (Trice vs Oregon State, Kane against UCONN, Jefferson got burned vs ND), but we have been more solid this season than any season since 2017 I believe.

I agree that the secondary has looked much better. However, had Coan been more accurate on long throws, Mackey would have been burned more than once. He's let guys run right by him in 1:1 coverage numerous times. At this point, he's been more lucky than good.

On that first pass he caught? Charles Davis was a full step faster than that lol…
