Basil Redshirt

Double edge sword. Do you prefer the bulldog type defender getting an extra year to get ready or a scorer? Im torn personally.

We shouldn't take away one of our 13 scholarships for a middle/low level recruit. Let them play out the 4 years and you hope to have higher level of recruit for that 5th year. There's just limited roster spots and you need as many available for future potential recruits. Is a 5th year for Grant really going to elevate our team to different level? I could see Cline being much better in his 5th year but we need him now so don't see that happening.

I think Cline could still redshirt this year. It's not so much if you can play at this point it's if you will play. Ideally you'll be able to get a lot out of Kendal and Dakota this year and that's not going to leave a lot of minutes for Cline. If we get to a point where we have to use Cline a lot I think we're already in a bad spot. He's played well in a couple scrimmages and he's a great shooter but I think if Painter looks at the big picture he may decide it's better to have him in a larger role in a 5th year than playing 5 minutes a game as a freshman.

Just don't think you can shirt a great shooter. If we are struggling offensively in an important game and he comes in and can score, it might make a difference in the BIG standings or a lower seed. With this team I think you take no chances. I don't even like Basil doing it, I don't even like the red shirt rule to start with other than with an injury.

You have to play defense to play for CMP. It's about technique and being physically strong enough to play defense in the B1G. That will be the determining factor for Cline imo.

I definitely feel the same way. I feel like this is the year we have to make some noise because whether or not Swanigan sticks around we are going to lose a lot next year. That being said, 4 years from now I can see a realistic situation where we say, "man I wish we had another season of Cline" and look back on this season as kind of a wasted opportunity. I know I haven't seen how the rotation is going to play out yet but I think Basil would have been able to get a lot more minutes than Cline. Swanigan will have games where he gets into foul trouble and we need someone to back him up and I would have thought basil would have played a big role there in filling in for him and Vince or just giving us a spark off the bench. Either way, I trust painter knows what he's doing. Looking forward to a great season.

It depends on the need for offense, R Smith played a lot and he couldn't guard me.

Like others here, I hope that Cline doesn't get redshirted. To those that question whether he projects to play much this season, you have to keep in mind that Mathias has not been fully-healthy for a significant period of time yet since he arrived in West Lafayette. So, I have concerns about just how solid things are going to be with Stephens and Mathias at the 2 and think it would be in the staff's best interest to let Cline play this season. JMO

Ryne was actually a good defensive player his senior year.

Cline is in a similar position as Smith was. A great shooter who needs strength and has to learn how to play defense. Painter has said he should have redshirted Smith. The team dynamics are definitely different but the players are not.

This is the last year we have AJH. Got to take advantage of his presence. I think we'd be really tough to beat if our outside shooting is good. Cline can help in that area. Now is the time!!

agreed

We'll see how things work out, but as of now, I think this season's team projects to be a little bit better than next season's team. With that in mind and Basil sitting out the season, everyone else should be available.

And there is a theme this year that everyone has to play at the top of their game because there is someone ready to step in. If you redshirt Cline, you take the pressure off the shooters. I'm not saying that they have been taking their status for granted, but I think the coaches should force the issue by giving him playing time when he's earned it or when the others have earned time on the bench.

I would really like for Cline to shirt but if injury problems happen pull the shirt immediately. Kendall will be better from 3 than last year, Vince is going to be a beast, lastly PJ and Dakota will be more consistent from deep.

I just hope we don't miss out on any 2017 recruits because of this. That class is loaded.

That is my concern also, with Stephens being the lone senior next year. May get 1-2 more open schollies between now and then (transfers, early exits, etc.). But the other part is now there are 5 scholarship seniors to replace the following year. I think it is going to be extremely difficult to get 5 high caliber players to sign in that 2018 class. This is why I prefer to see more balanced classes.
