B1G awards

I probably would have had Painter winning. I had him 3rd on my list for NCOY. Media loves the underdog... Northwestern just happened to be WAY MORE of an underdog than Purdue ever was.

I get that, Purdue was picked 5/6 in the preseason though. No doubt, Collins did a nice job, should have been voted the runner up.

If Purdue was expected to win the league I would understand the vote, the Boilers were projected to be mid level/bubble NCAA team, won the league by 3 games.

All very valid points and arguments, IMO. I expect the vote was close, and I also expect NW got the benefit of the doubt.

From a practical standpoint, I think Purdue's 2-4 stretch coinciding with Northwestern getting some big wins (including over Purdue) probably hurt Painter's chances more than anything......despite NW then losing three in a row to fall out of contention before beating up Rutgers in the regular season finale. They did go 6-4 on the road, too - that's pretty damn good.

Still - a great regular season for Matt Painter and his team. Congratulations and well deserved, especially to Zach Edey - he has come a long way and then some.

Painter had to replace FAR more production than collins did from last year's respective teams, yet Purdue won the conference by 3 games, a margin that hadn't happened for about 10 seasons. I get why there were votes for collins but he shouldn't get credit that he finally didn't suck for a season. In this case Painter is somewhat a victim of his own success, something that Parrish(CBS) wrote about in an article explaining why he'd included Purdue in his preseason top 25 when pretty much no one else had.

Chris Collins BTCOY

Complete and total BS
CMP lost more % scoring & rebounding than most of the B10....was ranked lowly coming in & took the championship out of nowhere....by 3 games!

At least that likely keeps Collins @ NW longer. That is great for every other B10 team based on his history, outside of this outlier year.

Further proof of why I disdain the media. I don't care what Northwestern accomplished, Purdue accomplished more. I equate this award to a participation trophy for Collins. Yes, NW had a very good year. But, we started unranked and were projected 6th in the Big Ten. Top 5 in the nation all year. Won the conference going away. Total BS.

Awards these days are going the way of award shows. They don't mean anything other than recognition and not all that many people pay attention. I think Painter should win it every year, but that is just how I roll.

Picked 6th and finished 1st.. vs picked 13th and finished 2nd.

Collins was on the hot seat coming into this season. NW has a lot of presence in media based upon the J School. I believe that was a strong contributing factor in Collins' selection.

On the positive side, that means that he will remain in Evanston for quite a few more seasons.

When a coach other than Painter wins BTCOY, I always feel like the award should be "Best Big Ten Coach of the Year Other Than Painter."

Reminds me of when Bobby Cox would get overlooked for Manager of the Year because the Braves always won, often with teams that looked weaker on paper.

One game made the difference in the COTY voting. Had Purdue slam dunked NU in Evanston, I think Painter would have won the award. Instead, NU finished 2nd in the league whereas had Purdue beaten them, they'd have finished in 9th after all of the tie-breakers. I'm sure as much as CMP would have liked to have won the award, he's probably more concerned with winning some post-season hardware.

Essegian beat out Loyer for All Freshmen team? That seems off but he had to do more for them with his supporting cast.

Essigian is the real deal. Could have been the difference off the bench this year for the Boilers. Wish we had him this year, and our shooting would have been immensely better.

Better than Loyer? Perhaps in some people's minds. He had his moments this year. But certainly not better than Loyer defensively.

Collins got coach of the year basically because he coaches northwestern. Take any other team with the projection and the actual results and that coach would not have gotten it. Northwestern has always been the truest of all underdogs.

The media are idiots. They are so inconsistent with this award. I'll never forget when Bo Ryan won COTY due to winning the league, and he had a sam decker, frank kaminski team. Bo was a great coach, but I could have won the big ten with that team. They were awesome, and expected to win in the preseason.

It's a hell of lot easier to lose 8 games than 5. You should know!
Well sure. It is when you're missing one starting guard for 2 games, another starting guard for 18, a starting 4 for 5 games, your best player playing a few at 50%. Here's what I do know, Indiana was the ONLY team in the top half of the standings who had a to half conference SOS. Even with the injuries, got a 3 seed. I'd consider that a success.

I am just pissed it wasn’t unanimous for Edey. He got robbed.

No argument other than biased can be made for the guy who finished third in the conference with more help with worse numbers.

Senior guards versus freshman guards. You tell me who coached better.

And NW was one loss away from being 9th and irrelevant
