The gentleman crying in the stands and shown on television was identified as the father of a young man who had just played his final college game at a University that he had represented tremendously well over the course of the past four years and poured his heart and soul into, and whose basketball career may have come to an end (at least his amateur one and the one with his classmates, teammates and friends)...easy to make fun of him certainly, but with perspective (even a little), it is not nearly as ridiculous as you suggest likely.
