Arkansas game?

Are we a different team? Jones and TKR are starters Painter has his 4 shooters surrounding Zach. How good must they be to send Gillis, Morton and Furst to the bench. ICYM Starters for today TKR, Jones, Edey, Smith, and Loyer. I am excited to see how this plays out.

It’s an interesting line-up in that it is small 1-3 and very big in the front court.

I think having 3 guys who can handle the ball and shoot, even if they are small, will help offset any spacing issues playing the two big guys to together. Defense will be the end I'm looking at the most.

On a side note. I don't think I've ever been this excited about an exhibition game. I get Arkansas isn't Marian college either, but the football game going on at the same time is going to be an afterthought to me that I will flip to during commercials. Pretty clear snapshot on the current state of both programs IMO.

It has been said all off season that Painter wanted to incorporate TKR more this season. It was obvious that Edey, Loyer and smith were going to start. That leaves you with 1 position to fill.

Do you put Tkr at the 3 so you can start Furst or Gillis at the 4? I don’t think so.

Do you start Miles or Heide at the 3? Maybe eventually but not the first game.

Painter loves using a 3 guard offense. I don’t, but he does. So you are left with Morton, Jones, miles or Heide for that last spot. Morton and Jones have more experience. Jones is known for his outside shooting and his defense. Painter loves to have Players jacking up air balls from the 3 point line. Jones seems like the logical choice.

For a first game. This lineup matches Painter’s philosophy of experience, defense, and players throwing up the ball from the perimeter. This may not be the team That finishes the year. But it seems like the one to start with.

While fans may love Gillis, he’s not really what this team needs at the 4 and he’s not a 3.

Furst has really not elevated his gave to become a starter at the 4. He’s become the backup center.

Morton is Morton. I’m glad we have someone else starting.

Hiede and Miles need to prove themselves and earn playing time.

Waddell may also be a fan favorite but Purdue has too many better options. Than to give him significant minutes. And he will see fewer minutes next year when Catchings arrives. It’s nice that he choose Purdue but I just don’t see him becoming a starter any time soon.

This all seems like a very logical Painter starting 5 . And looking down the road, if Heide or Miles want to start, I only see one potential opening - Jones. And that could be the reason those two recruits have not committed! If I can see it, surely they can see they have one path to starting. Miles, Heidi, Harris and Perry may be different style players, but there is only one future hole. And Loyer and Smith are not leaving any time soon! And next year Catchings will claim that spot! It’s nice to recruit players, but good players want a chance to play and a path to start!

I think that the reason Harris and Perry haven’t committed is that they each have multiple good options. Harris may be very high on both Purdue and Georgia Tech, but he can only choose one and that makes it tough.

If Harris chooses Purdue, he will be given the opportunity to earn playing time and even a starting role if he earns Painter’s trust. Painter has proven that with freshmen.

It seems that Perry is no longer in the mix, limited to no communication between his camp and Purdue are the reports out there.

Also viewed as 2 very good post scorers surrounded by 3 good (hopefully very good soon) outside shooters.
TRK's rise bumps both Gillis and Furst down a notch. Morton, the shooting part.
I am surprised by Jones as that leaves us short a backup for Braden. He's either shown to be the best "other" shooter or his defense is too good to have on the bench. Hopefully both :)
I'm sure this is subject to change in future scrims/games as well.

I think you will see Morton used some as a backup to Smith at point guard going back to the position he was recruited to play.

Nope.... maybe different players but so far.....can't shoot the 3, and most don't have athletism to compete. Same as last year.

TOs have killed P, to me a function more of not enough atltletism than it being early.

Hopefully they shake it off and do something in H2......but 26 pt half geez.

What data are you using to say we have 3 good shooters?

Looks like we still don't have anyone that can make mid range shots or drive to the basket. NCAA tournament might not look any better this year
Loyer has been ok in that area today.

Main problem today is the vast difference in athletic ability.
