I know as fans we are supposed to feel shame about complaining about officiating, but damn I am so tired of it seeming like the refs we draw are seemingly more important than the team we are facing.
Paul Szelc, Roger Ayers, Larry Scirotto, and Clarence Armstrong now have me every bit as worried about our chances in any given game as Courtney Green, DJ Carstensen, and Bo Boroski ever have.
I suppose maybe I need to dig deeper into just how often these guys ref our games, as maybe some of them have been there for the blowouts as well. However it just seems like the few losses we have had the last 3 years have largely had many of the same names involved in making bad calls (or more often swallowing their whistle entirely).
Any other team (or sport) I would just demand the coach compensate, but Painter just doesn't seem willing to tell guys "it is only a foul if they call it" like so many of opposing coaches do. He also won't stalk officials the entire game overly dramatically berating them into compliance like several others do.
Am I alone in this?
Aside from being annoyed of TV Teddy's theatrics or terrified we'd draw Boroski against IU, I don't recall giving almost any thought of officials until the last few years. Now I feel like the officials we get are seemingly more important than whether the opposition is missing their best player or even their head coach.
