Another Purdue legacy TE commits to ND

What about the Carlisle kid, son of Purdue's performance director? He is out there making plays for ND? If we cannot convince the kids of our own folks to come to Purdue, what chance do we have attracting others?

I mentioned before you're always going to have people with "ties" that do not go to the school they have ties. It's not just a Purdue thing. The more troubling thing is that we didn't even seem to try with Kmet. If he committed, he'd probably be our best recruit this class. Obviously we don't know specifics, but it seems a bit off we didn't even bother offering.

Overall, the recruiting strategy isn't exactly the most reassuring simply based on the track record of success (or lack of).

Sad that we have seem to abandoned Chicago. It was the LIFEBLOOD in the 1960's with Ron Meyer among others.

This has been a thing under Hope and Hazell. And something I find laughable given Hazell's "State of Purdue" strategy.

In Hazell's 2 full recruiting classes and the recruiting class we have put together so far....

9/54 recruits are from Indiana
4/54 are from Ohio
4/54 are from Michigan
1/54 is from Illinois
1/54 is from Kentucky

So in total, 19/54 of our recruits have been from Indiana or a surrounding Midwestern state.

I know everyone will start screaming "Indiana doesn't have enough talent!", "We can't compete against Ohio State in Ohio!", etc.

We don't need to have 100% of our team come from Indiana and/or the surrounding states. Of course not. But it's going to be VERY HARD to recruit "nationally" in these circumstances. There's plenty of talent in Indiana and the surrounding states. Think about it. So much of recruiting is based on the relationships you build. You build relationships with interaction. So the closer you are, the more often you can interact. This is why most schools stick to the areas around them to recruit. I know people like to think Purdue was all about national recruiting under Tiller, but it heavily was midwest and supplemented in Texas. We had a lot of players on our teams from Indiana and surrounding states.

It just baffles me that Purdue has so few players from Indiana. And it baffles me more we don't have more from Ohio, where Hazell had recruited in for years.

Purdue HAS to recruit closer to campus better than it has. This was a problem under Hope and it's a problem under Hazell. Until it's fixed, we aren't going to put together great classes. It's no coincidence our recruiting has been so poor.

No worries we don't use the TE anyway. As for the S&C coach I wish he would leave to be with his kid. Our OL has to be the weakest and slowest in D1.

That's because we recruited the weakest, slowest group of High school offensive linemen of anyone in the B1G.

Everyone one else is working hard too, there's only so much an S&C coach can do.

maybe he fell in love w/ those helmets that they wore vs Clemson. They looked like they mixed corn fritter batter and gold paint to spray on the helmets.

I agree with this 100%. Spot on.

Amir Carlisle played his freshman year at USC and is from Cali. I'm pretty sure he transfered to ND after his dad was at Purdue but I could be wrong about that.

I would think that Carlisle would have resigned his position after being embarassed by the choice that his son made. It spoke greatly about the perception of Purdue football among Purdue football families.

I'm not sure we want to embrace ALL of Ron Meyer's recruiting tactics: "we didn't buy Dickerson that Trans Am, but we might have put some gas in it for him."

It really is amazing we didn't offer this kid when you think about how weak we are at TE. He probably could have started as a true freshman.

I wonder if we were in contact with him and his family at all? Mind blowing.

They are probably like most Purdue grads are at the moment: FED-UP with our P.O.S. athletic department.

Not only that, but Cole Kmet's mom is Kandy Zgonina Kmet, Jeff Zgonina's youngest sister, and a Purdue grad herself.

I'm happy for Cole Kmet and his family too, I wish him all the best!
Holy crap - are u kidding me?!!?! Dad and uncle played at Purdue AND in the NFL, mom's a Purdue grad as well and we don't even offer him!!!

No wonder our recruiting classes suck so bad every year...

Wouldn't matter if we'd recruited him. These kids are thinking of playing on Sunday when they sign to play on Saturday. We don't have a history of developing NFL level TE talent. ND has in recent memory. Stanford is great at it. Purdue not so much.

Not only that, but when's the last time we even remotely featured a tight end? Dustin Keller? And he was more so a large receiver (6'2"). I think one of the reasons Brees saw such success was the use of the tight end. Our receivers were decent, but they weren't NFL-caliber. We kept defenses honest by also featuring a tight end heavily.

We were waiting for him to walk on and pay his own fees since he has rich parents and he could live at home. tic.

I'm not sure exactly WHY you believe that . . .

With the technology available today, we should recruit ANYWHERE we find a player willing to listen to what we have to offer:

Here is what we can/could currently offer prospective recruits regardless of our Won/Loss record:
  1. Top Notch education (if they are interested, most 4/5 stars aren't)
  2. Reputation in the NFL for producing excellent talent in several positions (QB, OL, WR, DE, DT, DB)
  3. Personal Contact with Purdue alumni in the NFL
  4. Offense that gives players an excellent skill set for "NFL type" offenses.
  5. Defense that consistently produces NFL star level defenders
Look - we are never going to stockpile 4 & 5 star athletes like the so-called "Big Boys". We need to focus on the kids that are exceptional athletes and have a "chip on their shoulder" because the "Big School" in their home state didn't offer them a scholarship (Drew Brees/Texas, Vinny Sutherland/Miami, etc.). Ultimately, every hotshot high school athlete has professional aspirations. We can't offer the weekly spotlight of Notre Dame, but we can show him that playing at Purdue gives him a great chance of getting the skills necessary to be successful at the NFL level.

This year was a smaller class for Purdue. We have 4 TE's that are So or younger. Maybe the coaching staff prioritized other positions.
Secondly, and I've said this repeatedly - not every kid wants to go to where his family went. This is especially true when his uncle was a legend (or should be) here.

Finally, the staff may have met the kid and realized he had no interest in following the family legacy and thus no offer. We just don't know. So quick ripping the staff for every recruit we don't get and let's support the ones we do.

I GUARANTEE this kid will be better than any of our TEs, with the NFL bloodlines on both his mom and dads sides.

Not saying he would have picked us, but why would we not offer?
