I've harped on the poor decisions on offense, the board play the obvious interior weakness to stop power players inside...but I just caught this stat...and although it is an average...the only reasoned answer (not sure I agree with this though) I can come up with is that Matt was fearful of playing in the half court more adn strying to steal some points before the D gets set. i don't agree with that and think Purdue never put Tennessee in some difficult decisions. If you are NOT the athletic team...do you want a foot race?m If you want a cerebral game of skill more than athletic power...do you want to use the clock to your advantage. With all the obvious things we all saw....Purdue's AVG TIME OF POSSESSION WAS 13 SECONDS...13 SECONDS!!!!! Does THAT scream anything? Tennessee, the athletic team took almost TWICE AS MUCH TIME PER POSSESSION in putting Purdue on D for their favorite match-up at 20 seconds. Now granted some of that was steals and such...but over the course of a game...Tennessee used a lot more time per possession.

Now it is a data point...and the data may be hidden deeper than quickly seen...but is there ANY reason Purdue should have a 13 second average time of possession. Is this due to Haas being so quick to get up and down the floor? ;)

Comes down to two players taking 52% of the shots and most of those being bad to poor shots early in the clock. Carsen needs to be reigned in a bit and if he can’t get his selection figured out, he’ll end up being the first off the bench just like he was at the end of the season.

When your shot isn’t falling, you can impact the game in different ways: playing shut down defense, moving the ball an extra pass to setup another teammate, etc etc. Vince and Carsen didn’t do that enough today.

yeah...we are kinda getting around to dumb offense...13 seconds...13 seconds...

Basketball is like life ... sometimes you get the bear and sometimes the bear gets you. I've watched way too many games and created a great strategy to what I saw, then their guys played different and my guys didn't play they way they always did ... and a couple of shots that always went in didn't and some of the balls bounced a different way and damn .. my team and the other best team in the damn tourney both lost. and basketball was like life ...

AS you know...when the ball is tossed up...the game takes on a life of its own...and it goes soooooooooooo fast for those making decisions. Still, there are many things that Matt would do over differently with his hindsight...but there is a lot of "playing" experience on that court to have as many poor offensive decisions. I understand the athletic side...I can even understand if you are outmanned and a press hurts you, but to have the ball and not struggling with pressure and to still make bad decisions on offense is frustrating. I hate the shot clock as it continues to make the game one dimensional...and Purdue cut the shot clock in half today...

I am not mad at any single human and I in no way want to replace anyone. Maybe it was a perfect storm, or maybe not. I am pissed that we as a Boiler family did not earn what I think we deserved ... and sure, how many times do we all miss out on what we supposedly deserve, but the seniors didn't finally earn the opp to beat a top five team. That opp doesn't come often. And the fam didn't earn the right to a decent seed in the dance. Maybe we get one anyway, but we had the opp to really put the pressure on.

It's OK, life goes on and we shall go on. We may run the table in the conf, we may get a good seed, we may do great in the dance. We certainly can ..

Carsten runs down court as fast as possible like a 2nd grader and shoots no matter what the defense is doing. He's a worse version of his hero Iverson and I've already mentioned Iverson never won squat.

Everything u say is dead on....I just feel like we have seen this game before, we see the writing on the wall, I️t gets tiresome....too many missed opportunities and I was sure this year would be different...and to have my mind changed against a Tennessee team that we were better than is a tough pill to swallow. If the Big was off to a good start and presented more opportunities to prove ourselves, maybe I️t wouldn’t hurt so much...but I’ve seen how this plays out...

But wait, I've been told all summer how much more athletic this years team will be and how we will be able to do things that CMP teams haven't been able to do. Where were those athletes today? It looked like the same players to me only trying to play quicker.

I agree with your questioning 13 second possession average. The part I'm questioning is where are all the athletes I was told we recruited so we could compete with quicker, more athletic teams? With the rotation we played yesterday we basically swapped Caleb for Haarms and Eifert and sped up. Wheeler, Ewing, Eastern and TJ were supposed to give us the athleticism that we lacked before and they either aren't playing at all this year or very little.

If those players aren't ready/able to play then I agree completely with you, slow the damn game down and play like we did last year (through the post). I'm just frustrated that it looks like I'm going to have to hear another year's worth of the "we can't match the athleticism of good teams". I was hoping that was over.

Yesterday’s loss had nothing to do with UT being more athletic than Purdue. They weren’t running up and down the floor on Purdue. Purdue’s average possession was 13 seconds and most of that was bad shot selection.

TJ said "If we are not the athletic team....". That was what I was responding to.

I would disagree with you. Running up and down the floor is not the only measure of athleticism. So is getting to loose balls and out jumping your opponent. Both of those things happened multiple times yesterday. The team we put on the floor yesterday was not as athletic as UT. We may have tried playing as if we were, but we weren't.

Disagree. I think this team is athletic and yesterday was more about effort and poor decision making than lack of athleticism.

The increased athleticism comes from the new additions. Wheeler, Eastern, and Ewing. But if we aren't playing them, any perceived increase in athleticism is unhelpful.

This years roster is the same as last years in terms of who plays and therefore there is no difference in athleticism yet. The more athletic players are not yet the best players, but I️ do think that is coming.
This group has always struggled with this style of play.

I juscan happen to think yesterday was more of an effort and following the game plan more than anything.

Win by 1 point and 75% of these posts never happen.
that is true for a lot of posts, but I guarantee some had concerns before and during the game whether win or lose...they existed. Still, I agree that most posters would not be as concerned if Purdue would have won.

Been thinking about that before yesterday. I wondered if Matt was trying to jell as much as possible to make a great showing in the tourney figuring he would play Villanova and Arizona...AND then start getting more playing time for some when the teams were a bit easier than in this tourney. You are not going to get out of Haas or Haarms what you need if your average time of possession is 13 seconds. If Purdue needs those two...then it is obvious they need to take some time and use them. I think last summer most everyone thought Wheeler would play valuable minutes...but now it appears he is a redshirt...as is shasha...that is two of those recruits coming in. Ewing, who I got to watch a small bit before he arrived and I thought he had a long way to go and so I'm not surprised he hasn't got a lot of time. Still, could Purdue have used one of two of the athletes when it was just smack ball around the rim until it went in?

My issue with the clock is nto to solely play through the post, but that the post was ignored wiht a 13 second clock. This is not the AJ years where he needed to get touches (plural) every time down the court, but 13 seconds is ignoring the post. It probably takes 8 seconds for a run for Haas...

Good to see you are back on here...been missing for a while and glad the health is okay...

Thanks, good to be back. I stay away during the summer for the most part. Boating and fishing take priority!!

I just read so much about this incoming class and how they were going to transform our athleticism. I really think some of that was Treed and her over the top belief this class was ready to compete and a lot of people wanting to agree with her and talk up this class. It got out of hand. I think it's clear that Haarms is going to play a lot but not much for the others. That being said, I agree that 13 second possessions are ridiculous for this group. Slow down, make good decisions and we'll have better results.

Does this mean we are still not athletic enough to play zone?? I'm just kidding!!

so surprising seeing these comments with the current senior roster, plus coming off all those extra preseason world games too.

and hearing each critique from commentator-hummel, as he pointed out numerous things the experienced guys didn't do so well yesterday.

and then to see much of it all over again vs wku. yikes

that first half vs wku sure had to challenge the previous 13 second average time of possession stat

Disagree. I think this team is athletic and yesterday was more about effort and poor decision making than lack of athleticism.

How can you say this team is athletic?
Thompson, Mathias and haas are all less than avg athletes. Mathias and PJ are certainly not Big10 level athletes. I don’t recall Mathias’ offer list but question how many Big 10 offers he had. I’m pretty sure PJ had no other B10 offers. We now see what others coaches knew.
Vince is marginal. CE is our best athlete.

Losing is one thing, getting out hustled and playing out of control is hard for me to take period.
That’s why I wasn’t particularly upset against Kansas last season. Just a night when Purdue got beat and it was evident Kansas was a better team...the last two games are frustrating because it appears the issues are more about effort, hustle, and following the scouting report.

A really good team can lose to a poor team by not following those three things...especially not following the scouting report.
