Student government proposal to fund mental health care on campus..

Young proposed the university hire additional CAPS clinicians and up resources to meet those recommendations and reduce the wait time for appointments. He suggested to partially fund the $682,200 plan with alcohol sales from sporting events.

I realize mental health and alcoholism are serious issues, however......
Am I the only one that gets a little smirk thinking about the irony of the 3-way relationship between Purdue football, alcohol, and mental health?

The irony that concerns me is the assumption that the University has somehow become responsible for the mental health of the students. Seems to me that is a family and/or individual responsibility and that students are not wards of the university.

I was just highlighting the "dark humor" in the situation.. Purdue football driving people to depression, driving people to drink. Alcohol sales at football games providing help for people depressed by Purdue football.

To your "serious" point, I don't know much about CAPS, and I'm not sure it even existed when I was on campus.. However, I understand it is tied in with PUSH, which has been around for a long time and provides important health care services to students. With the seriousness of mental health issues nationwide count me as one who supports the idea that mental health of the student body is just as important as physical health, and that having a place on-campus where students can go to receive professional health services is a good thing. I don't think simply offering services puts the "responsibility" on the University, as services like these are elective and benefit the University as a whole.

There is no downside to this, IMO. ... Make alcohol available to those willing to pay, and have some of the proceeds go to a hugely neglected area of health care. ..
And-- in order to avoid derailing this thread into a political war, I'll simply say that the more attention we pay to mental health issues in this era of judicial activism gone amok, the better. ...
