Eva Hudson has been named an Honorable Mention All-American. This on top of being selected as an AVCA Midwest Region Team honoree, regional Freshman of the Year, First Team All-Big Ten, the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and a unanimous Big Ten All-Freshman Team selection. I am pretty sure her list of honors will get much longer as her career progressses. (And hopefully a FF appearance!)

Raven Colvin was also selected as an AVCA Midwest Region Team honoree. I was a little surprised Maddie Schermerhorn was not.

There are postings that Maddie Chinn and Eva Torrance, having graduated, have entered the portal for their COVID years but I cannot find anything official saying this. Interesting.

Also, Allie Shondell's teammate on her Academy Boilers Juniors Club team, Sienna Foster, just committed to Purdue for the 2024 class. Dave's classes are taking a local flavor. Allie committed a couple of months ago.

Can you elaborate more on both these girls
Allie Shondell is a 5’10” setter and ranked #43 in the 2024 class by PrepVolleyball. She plays at McCutcheon in Lafayette and has played with the star of next year’s Purdue class, Chloe Chicoine (the #1 nationally ranked player of the 2023 class). Her father is John Shondell, VB associate head coach at Purdue and head coach Dave Shondell is her uncle.

Sienna Foster is 5’10” defensive specialist/OH (but unlikely at that height that she will play in front row). She goes to Benton Central in Oxford. I cannot find a ranking for her. Her father is Todd Foster who, if you are old like me, you remember from Gene Keady’s MBB teams of 1992-93 to 1995-96. Todd is presently Associate Director of Academic Support Services at Purdue.

Thanks. Remember Todd well. He was a fierce competitor. But I have to ask, if she isn't highly rated and will be limited to where and when she can play why did Dave give her a scholarship when he is finally getting really top at ed players?

Volleyball is weird, she may not have gotten a full scholarship, guessing it’s a partial. Also, Ava Torrence is in the transfer portal, couldn’t find anything on Chinn in there as of yet.

There are several different rating services. I only subscribe to one and they only do the Top 150. She may be in the Top 150 by next year. You never know for sure. I trust in Dave’s ability to judge which players will help the team and which will not. I doubt many if any of our back row players other than Hornung this year were top 150 when they graduated from high school. And Schermerhorn has outshined them all.

In the end it is a crapshoot.

Both Illinois (Kenna Wollard) and Indiana (Chloe Chicoine) State VB POY honorees enrolling at Purdue this spring. Ranked #63 nationally by PrepVolleyball. Next year should be fun.

Here is the link to the full article which gives some detail as to how Coach Shondell stole her from an All-Illinois University family .

Wollard delivers en route to All-State volleyball Player of the Year honor

Anyone close to the program got info if Schermerhorn is a possibility to return next season? If she returns Purdue is probably preseason top 10, hope Dave is giving her the opportunity.

Hopefully our two young middle blockers step up next year to help Colvin. Some size on the court in the middle would be nice.
Colvin, Hudson both return up front, Purdue has Lourdes Myers, and two girls that redshirted Lizzie Carr, Brielle Warren along with the new recruits for next year. I think Doc mentioned Chinn is in the portal, is there a chance that 1 of Ellis or Koch return? If not I wouldn’t be surprised to see 1 transfer added in the middle. As of now Colvin, Hudson, Hornung, Renner, Schermerhorn all returning starters are back, looks like an experienced and deep team will hitting the court next season. Preseason top 10 maybe?

Is setter Sydney Yim in the portal? Saw a tweet to that effect a day or two ago, but looks like that tweet is no longer available.

As you said, Coach Shondell mentioned numerous times this season that MB Lourdes Myers, OH Brielle Warren and, especially, 6'6" MB Lizzie Carr were good enough to start. He is especially high on Carr. Carr would have played except he wanted to redshirt her so she has four full years. He predicts she will be an All-American within a couple of years if not more quickly.

Read an interesting article about Ohio State’s Volleyball team, all 5 of their Sr’s on their final 8 team are leaving for other programs. They still want to play but OSU’s Coach told them there wasn’t scholarship spots available, the extra Covid year is making it tough on programs deciding on what Sr’s to keep, looks like OSU’s elected to have them all move on for their 5th year. I think Shondell played it correctly with Schermerhorn, she lost a years starting spot when Otec returned, guessing that’s why she was allowed the extra year. My guess is she’ll be the only Super Senior back next year. Maybe Purdue takes in a transfer, doubt it will be 3 like they took in last season.

What’s the scholarship limit for volleyball?

12 scholarships; all must be full-rides versus baseball can give out partial scholarships and spread them around. Both basketballs and football at the FBS level must give out full rides. Football at FCS level max is 63 and you can give out partial scholarships.

Good info, so Purdue had that many non scholarship volleyball players last year? They had like 17-18 girls on the team.

Probably a couple of walkons; also some players might have academic aid. The roster sizes have grown with the addition of a libero and more uses of defensive specialists. The game is much different now than it was 20 years ago without rally scoring and games to 15.

Womens basketball gets 15 scholarships, one would think Volleyball would get 14ish, 12 seems low. Purdue must have players getting academic aid, I doubt they got 5/6 girls that good that are walking on.

I too was surprised that the number was so low, but dkjoich is correct. It must be hard for some of those down in the pecking order to work that hard all season but not be on full-ride athletic scholies. As you said, they must get around it in part with academic scholarships.

These scholarship numbers and rules are set by the NCAA. Every member school operates under the same rules. Actually, there many fewer female student-athletes who decided to walk-on to Division One programs versus males. Many females realize there are fewer opportunities to pursue a career in professional sports. In my opinion, they are a truer definition of a student-athlete. If you look at their chosen academic majors, there are many more varied (engineering, pharmacy, health sciences, etc.) than sales and selling management that populate some of our male teams. AOC, Mockebee, and Kieran Douglas were all former walk-ons. Did anybody ask who footed the bill for the school before being out on scholarship? Were they on an academic scholarship?

Watching a replay of the Under Armour Next All-America Volleyball game on ESPNU. Chloe Chicoine is playing in it. The announcers mentioned that she will begin at Purdue next week. They also mentioned that her hobbies are the interesting combination of ping pong and lifting.

Going forward is it possible for someone close to the program to post a roster as of right now? Are Chinn and Ellis for sure gone? How about players like Yim, and Emily Raskovski, are they returning? I read that rosters as of next year will be close to what they used to be prior to Covid, guessing that means maybe 16-17 girls at most. Purdue with Hudson, Colvin, Schermerhorn along with Renner and Hornung have 4 sometimes 5 starters returning along with some key reserves and a #2/3 recruiting class, should be a fun year.
