INDIANAPOLIS — I've covered a lot of bone-chilling-cold high school football events over the years, just never on Mother's Day, so today was a first in that sense, as the brutal morning rain and annoying afternoon rain took the 40-some-degree temps to another level of miserable today as the Rivals Camp Series came to Ben Davis.
Turnout was great; turnout from a Purdue perspective not so much.
Brady Allen is ill and didn't come. Target Joe Strickland wasn't there either, nor was tight end target Charlie Kenrich nor commitment Domanick Moon. All were registered.
Oh well.
There were a handful of interesting players though.
Some quick notes in advance of the stories and whatnot we'll have to come.
ANOTHER EARLY JUNE OFFICIAL VISITOR
Georgetown (Ky.) athlete Kalib Perry is a Purdue priority and has an official visit set for that first weekend in June.
Perry looks more like an outside linebacker to me than anything but he's being recruited as a hybrid safety/linebacker.
Cincinnati and West Virginia are some of his other offers but he wants to do engineering in college and I do think Purdue has put itself in a good position here leading into visit season.
ASHTON CRAIG UPDATE
In-state offensive line target Ashton Craig has four June officials set and Purdue isn't one of them, which generally isn't a great sign, but he said he does hope to get on campus again, maybe for an unofficial visit in June.
Nebraska, Northwestern, Iowa and Vandy are his four June visits right now.
Craig is listed as a tackle and is athletic enough to do that, but he looks like a guard to me, FWIW.
PURDUE STILL IN TOUCH WITH KEYLEN DAVIS
Ben Davis offensive lineman Keylen Davis has offers from West Virginia, Kentucky and Boston College among others to this point and seems to be digging pretty deep on those who've offered.
Purdue hasn't offered yet, but is calling him regularly.
"They said they're trying to get me down for a camp this summer," Davis said. "I'm going to see if I can fit it into my schedule. They call me every couple weeks, see how I'm doing, chit-chat here and there."
Wish I'd gotten more out of this, but will try to get some of the no-shows or the guys I lost in the crowd — Jawaun Northington, for one — on the phone.
